Now this is a story all about how
My bearings got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
And tell you how I used to mix and burn my gas and my air.
In RVA suburbs born and raised
On the dragstrip is where I spent most of my days
Chillin out, maxin, relaxing all cool,
'n all shooting some BS outside with my tools
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started running races in my neighborhood
I heard one little knock and my rods got scared
And said "You put it in the garage until you figure out where..."
I Begged and pleaded that it not be that way,
But it didn't want to start and run another day.
I kissed it goodbye, because the motor punched its ticket
I got out my camera, said "I might as well kick it."
Crankwalk yo this is bad
Drinking metal shavings from an oil pan.
Is this what the rumor of crankwalk is like?
Hmm this won't be alright
But wait I heard knocking, grinding and all that
Is this the type of failure that should happen to this cool cat?
I don't think so, I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for this video I share.
Well I pulled all the bolts and when I came out
There were chunks in my fluids in the pan and they drained out
I aint all depressed cause I seen this before.
I got my books and my wrench and we'll do it once more.
I sprang into action like lightning disassembled
I whistled while I worked and my hands never trembled
If anything you could say that this bling is rare,
and when I saw what broke I stained my underwear.
I turned off the air compressor 'bout 7 or 8
And I yelled to crankcase "Yo holmes, smell ya later"
I looked at my internals they were finally there
To sit on my workbench and stink up the air.
Audio track by RojoDelChocolate.
Here's the 48,000 mile-old 7-bolt I blew up summer 2011 after over 150 drag passes, a half dozen dyno sessions, 4 transmissions, 3 clutches and 10 years of hard all-weather use.

What a legend you are. Making all of these excellent quality videos for us scrubs to watch and learn. It amazes me just how well you are making them, and also your skills and tireless knowledge. KZbin's greatest DIY/educational/mechanical video making lord. Keep it up man, you have helped me understand a hell of a lot more than I previously had. And i'm 100% sure I am not the only one.

I just wanted to thank you for this heart-felt comment 11 years ago. I feel you, bro. It's a crime that back then when I had all my wits and local facilities at 100% I didn't have the funding nor this fancy new camera. It's only because of people like you that I made it. Thank YOU! Everyone else is closed now, but I made it! And hell yeah, RojoDelChocolate on point strong, too! I think this is his finest work! Maybe mine as well? I miss making 15 minute videos without voiceovers!

Jafro- Thanks for taking the time and posting such great videos. I've watched this at least a half dozen times, and some of the silly stuff is hilarious. My Talon has been sitting in the garage for three years now, but after watching these videos (and finally having some extra cash), I think I'm ready to pull the motor and try to fix it myself (I have a spun bearing). Keep up the good work!

Just about to pull the engine starting tomorrow. Bought the eclipse non starting, with need of new panels basically everywhere. It's been a slow and steady progress. I just started the engine today after replacing my fuel pump and other various missing parts earlier this year. Car started instantly, ran smooth, but lots of grinding. (Mind you I've never been this in depth on a vehicle ever) Major reason I bought it was because buying the broken down GSX was cheap, and the parts car GST was cheap too. So far it's been a huge and fun learning adventure and I'm always excited to keep at it with my free time. Still not sure if it's crank walked or if the valve train is euchred from the crank pulley shearing off.

@Jafromobile this is a pretty helpful video. Im saying this because my friend is trying to convince me to swap a 4g63 in my mirage coupe. I may have to get an engine block without the cylinder head, but at least i can add some arp studs and a better head gasket on it. then maybe i can get a cylinder head with some crower stage 2 cams and some lighter pulleys and other things like that. keep up the inspiration Jafro.

isnt the reason for 7 bolt crank walk the piston oil squirters? when they went to the 7 bolt they changed the way the valve worked for each squirter and they would get stuck open and since the oil for the squirters comes from the mains, thats why the crank walks, because the regular bearings dont need as much oil as the thrust bearing, and once the squirter valve cant close, the thrust bearing loses most of its oil out through the squirter. thats the best explanation Ive heard for it.

@jafromobile thanks for the detailed information. very useful. im leaning towards the oil jets vs oil squiters as i read much about the difference between the jdm evo blocks and usdm blocks (7bolt) is indeed a factor towards CW. however like you stated, any block can walk and there are many contributing factors to it not only limited on its design or bearing or material that the bearing/block is casted from. so hows the build coming up? good luck with it by the way and happy new year.

Thanks much for your advise. Last Question. When I do the junk yard technique presented by you in blue print video, i can find out end play using feeler gauge or digital gauge, if end play is within servicable limit, does that mean that Main bearing or Rod bearing is good, if hope not if thats the case is there a way to check with engine in car.

Very informative man! I've got a 4G63 motor with about 1200 miles on it that is showing signs of "crankwalk" (Due to a machinist who didn't know what they were doing). Knice clean tear down. It looked like someone blood poured glitter dow the dip stick tube. That 3rd bearing cylinder was so messed. I spun a rod bearing and I think it was due to crank walk. Just driving home one day stereo on as loud as I could get it and I push in the clutch f ar dies. I turn down the raido and let the clutch out and it sounded like a hammer k mmm ocking on a metal pot. Taking a turn at 50mph slung all the oil to the side of the pan and the inside tore spun and hit the rev limiter and I heard the engine strain and I relised what had happened.

I was having clutch issues for quite some time on my 6bolt pulled trans to change fork and pivot ball and then for shits and giggles tried to move flywheel back and forth and guess what it moved quite a bit🤬 so its been sitting for a year now because i lost interest in my 1G at that moment, thank goodness i have a 2G and S13 also. One day i will get to fix it

Jafro What size is that vise of yours? A Wilton 5.5"? If you don't mind me asking, where did you get it and about how much did you pay for it?

Wouldnt a mechanical bolt stop be a more preferred method for the oil pickup tube rather than trusting a chemical one like loctice? Or maybe use both?

very good vid. a good bit of tinkering there to get the crank and rods out. was the engine starved of oil. that caused the shells to turn in the cap> or over revving.??

Can you link the exact video where you show/talk about this hidden bolt?

Often thrust wear is because the clutch is pushed to far i always put a adustable stop on the pedal and adjust it so the clutch just frees enough, stops the clutch trying to push the crank out the front of the motor, ez and works good TurboPhil
