I spent 30 years deploying scientific instruments and devises from a research vessel. Used many types of ropes and twines. Tied and spliced many types. Learned the hard way not to trust knots in synthetic rope. I learned to always finish knots by lashing the bitter end down with #9 nylon twine in half-hitches generously and tightly. I also built and repaired trawls and gill nets.

Do you have a knot tying station? I’ve seem some made from wood and dowels. Even some fancy ones built from copper pipe. Seems like a nice addition to the workbench to practice on.
@JasonsKnotChannelАй бұрын
I don't but I have a variety of devices that I practice with. A knot tying station is a good idea.
@ferzzfilinnАй бұрын
Great point! Many of the knots I learned are actually modified versions of sipmle knots. You can use some basic knots as, well, bases to tie some backups or mkdifications. Bowline, for example, can be tied by simply whipping one and of the rope iver the otger, creating a loop pretty fast. And when you've fixed the rope with the loop, you can just secure it with, as you said, with adding extra knot or some modification.

Excellent example of a modified knot! Thank you

Hey Jason, I'm new to your fantastic knot channel! What non-crappy knot would you recommend for a removable tree swing? I'm looking for something easy to set up and take down, perfect for swinging over a river at break spot while I float, rather than a swing that stays up all summer. Thanks! "I have a 1.5" 25' gym rope to swing with" :)

Dealing with ankle boots I found the flats go over and the rounds go under thing is good but I just use the two eyes near the toe and the eye at the transition to the ankle hooks. after adjusting the lace to comfort I half hitch the lace to the eye. I cut a one half inch leather "washer" for the end of the lace and keep that in place by tying an overhand stopper three inches from the end. I can then use one of the ankle hooks and tie a regular shoelace knot and pull the washers back to the knot.

Knotskool. Really look forward to your new content. I've learned a lot...now if I could only remember what I learned! I keep a length of small rope beside my chair and practice while watching but I'm at the stage in life where my rolodex doesn't spin as fast as it used to. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Slick line like you have there acts very differently to knots than ordinary hemp rope. Climbers, truckers, campers, sailors and home owners all have different needs. The square knot is mostly bad due to being so hard to untie in most ropes (IMHO) And the bowline is often perfect for what it needs to do, but with small changes can stay tight in any case. Best mod for boline (IMHO) is to make two loops on top of each other and continue normally.
@JasonsKnotChannelАй бұрын
You make some good points. Definitely the type of rope plays a huge roll too. Thanks for sharing.

knots that work on natural fiber rope tend not to work on synthetic. Test with back-up knots and prove it before you rely on it.
@JasonsKnotChannelАй бұрын
That’s a good point. Definitely true, also different synthetics behave differently (nylon, polyester, poly, etc.) as well as the diameter of a rope. Thanks for the reply

I've always been surprised by the devotion of people to the bowline, when it's really a very poor quality loop. The Englishmens Loop is dramatically more effective, yet people cling to the bowline as if it's some essential basic knot. Knot(not) for me ;-)
@jack002tuberАй бұрын
I really like the bowline, less steps to learn than to tie your shoes. One small mod to it and it will hold anytime anywhere
@JasonsKnotChannelАй бұрын
Yes, but I think the bowline is also so popular because it can be used for a lot of different applications combined with it being one of the first knots people learn. Most people would get a better response if the asked “can you tie a bowline over there” compared to “can you tie a cossack knot over there”. People in general probably like to demonstrate their skills and recommend what they’re familiar with. Bowline is a great knot. It’s just not the best all, end all. Thanks for sharing
@BradinManheimАй бұрын
Decades of sailing disprove your statement about the bowline. I, like most sailors, use the bowline to tie the jibsheets to the sails. They are subject to constantly changing stress. There is very strong stress on the knot when on the wind and the offside has zero stress. Puffs and lulls constantly change the amount of stress. I have never had one come untied.
@JasonsKnotChannelАй бұрын
I’m also a sailor, Pearson Triton. Did my first solo passage of 500 NM this year. What are you sailing? The bowline was a a good knot, which I think I said in the video. I have had it fail, and of course knots are not only used for sailing. I would never use the bowline for a lifeline when climbing without backing it up. Would you?
@BradinManheimАй бұрын
I sold my Pearson 303 a year ago. You won’t find me climbing anything that needs a rope or knot to save my life!
@TintinUSSRАй бұрын
I remember a bowline used by a sailor to tie a boat to a pig. It let go in the night. Changing and shifting loads untied it. Also climbers do not use it. They stick to the figure of eight. I have heard also about an EBSB Bowline which is secure and acceptable.

A clickbait title with one of the most well known, widely regarded knots in the thumbnail. Here's your "Don't recommend this channel."
@JasonsKnotChannelАй бұрын
😂 obviously you didn’t watch the video.
@strixtАй бұрын
@JasonsKnotChannel That's absolutely correct, and I have no intention of doing so. When you write something and specifically put it next to/in a picture, it typically means that whatever was written pertains to said picture. So, either it's controversy clickbait, or you're actually saying that one of the most famous knots in history is a "crappy" knot. You tell me which of those is more accurate.
@mpdsailingАй бұрын
Harsh much‽
@TintinUSSRАй бұрын
Watch it. Do not use bowline for serious life related stuff. Do not use the original truckers hitch for serious loads, secure knots with half hitches. Do not use square knot do not teach it, unless it is a component of more serious knots.
@strixtАй бұрын
@TintinUSSR No thanks. The bowline holds up just fine under opposite load tension, that's why it has been used in rescue operations for a very long time. Ring load is where it falls short, but side to side ring load is not the force that a body puts on rope. Are there variations that handle loads better? Yes, but sometimes time is short, and you don't have the luxury of explaining to someone which direction the second turn should be, or which loop to pass through for the variations. The truckers hitch is just fine for serious loads, but multiple uses over time weakens areas of your rope. The wagoneers hitch (the *original* version) doesn't have that issue. Yes, *wagoneer.* Secure knots with half hitches is fairly commonly taught, at least from a majority of what I see. Square knots are fine, but don't expect them to perform what they weren't designed or claimed to perform. Just because there is a variation of a knot that might do things better, doesn't mean the original is a "crappy" knot. The comment stands, the video remains unwatched, and the channel remains in the "don't recommend." There are far too many knot channels out there to get tied up in clickbait on one of them.
