Not to mention the bad guy didn't really do anything wrong until after the machinery horribly disfigured him into some half-man half-robot test dummy freak. The backstory implies they had agreed not to infuse "human life" whatever that means into their robots. Advisor did so anyway, other guy got pissed and tried to shut the machine down. The clearly not-OSHA-compliant panel breaks and practically kills him, and as you said Advisor had plenty of time to try to stop it but just stood there doing anything. You're not wrong. Someone trying to stop their friend from recreating life within an artificial form without the person's consent, only for their attempt to stop this leading to their body becoming harmed and sent through to be processed in a similar manner, all the while that 'friend' just watches you be taken away before continuing with their experiment against the concept of death itself is a pretty good buildup to a villain who's not shown attempts to control the world, but just to stop their old friend's experiments. But, allow me to retort this; Ahem. Not such a dummy now, am I? I rest my case.

As someone who bought the game out of morbid curiosity, there is one more positive I can add: The first boss is a lot less annoying to fight. In the original game you could only damage him by shooting the weak spot inside his mouth, which only becomes vulnerable when he opens his mouth to roar at you - something he does at complete random, meaning you could be stuck on that boss for a very long time if RNGesus decides not to play nice. But in the remake, the boss instead becomes vulnerable whenever he's about to attack, making it a lot easier to get hits in more quickly so you can finish the battle in a short amount of time.

I’m actually impressed that they screwed it up so badly. First off, as noted, getting motion controls bad is fairly standard affair. And to be fair to developers of games with bad motion controls, they are a lot more complicated to write code for (and thus much harder to do well) than button, joystick, keyboard, or mouse controls. Even touchscreens are (somewhat) easier. To have screwed up so badly with basic button controls like this is kinda crazy. Second, while I’m no expert, my understanding is that the biggest difficulty with porting something from the PS4 or PC to the Switch is the fact that the Switch has less power to work with and the physical games generally have less space, but since this was originally a mobile game and is only available digitally, that should not be an issue at all since mobile phones aren’t capable of better graphics or performance than the Switch anyways and digital-only games aren’t bound by the restrictions of physical media. I cannot think of a single good reason why the Switch port should be less functional than the PS4 port. Third, collision in a 2D sidescroller shouldn’t be this broken, especially since all the assets are also 2D. Collision in 3D is difficult, but in 2D, it’s not terribly hard. Most difficulties with 2D collision (at least nowadays) that would affect gameplay come from hitboxes not fitting the sprite all that well or when a sprite somehow manages to end up somewhere it shouldn’t. Standard gameplay shouldn’t lead to clipping through floors or standing in midair like that. Same basic thing goes for the ledge-grab + jump thing. That’s just bizarre. Fourth, what’s with the lack of a pause screen? It’s not like mobile games don’t normally have pause screens; most (including every platformer or action game I’ve played on mobile) have one. At the very least, they could’ve gone with the old approach of pausing gameplay without bringing up a menu (at least with one of the two buttons typically used for pausing, menus, or maps). And how did they even make it so that the home button on PS4 doesn’t suspend gameplay? Like, seriously, I didn’t even know that was possible. Again, it’s not like this was from it being a mobile game originally; Android and iOS devices also have a home button or equivalent that works similarly. Fifth, the PC port has no option to quit? Like, what? Now, granted, for a console or mobile game, such a thing wouldn’t be necessary, but it wouldn’t be that hard to do, and it is absolutely necessary. It’s also something that the programmers absolutely should’ve caught (and fixed) before releasing it on Steam. Sixth, while some PC games don’t allow keyboard, mouse, or keyboard-and-mouse controls for pretty good reasons (mostly ones that use VR controls or something), it doesn’t make sense for something so simple. It’s not like it would’ve been hard; just have certain key presses be mapped to certain button presses. Not doing that is just plain lazy. And last, I’ve never heard of a game without motion controls that controls worse than a previous or concurrent version of the game that has motion controls, nor of a sequel to a game with bad animations and bad voice acting having even worse animations and voice acting than the original, nor of a 2D version of a 3D game having worse collision and more glitches than the 3D version. Honestly, having a remake/demake that retells the same story as the original but adding some details for the backstory is not a bad idea, and taking a bad 3D platformer with motion controls and some glitches (which weren’t exactly gamebreaking most of the time) that was essentially just a 2D sidescroller with some movement in the Z-axis and turning it into a 2D sidescrolling platformer without motion controls is not a bad idea either. However, the bugs and the spelling and grammar errors with written dialogue, the inexplicable name-change for a major character, the worse collision, the presence of even more glitches (only worse ones, including ones that are actually gamebreaking), the forced tutorial that doesn’t actually explain anything, the inconsistent controls, the worse voice acting (as well as lack thereof later), the worse animations… Like, this is absurdly bad even by the standards of Just Bad Games. It may not be the worst of them, but the things that make it bad are just so bizarre.

What I find even more insane is that in neither of their CID reviews, do they mention the PS2 or PSP versions possibly without motion controls. Plus, I kind of find the original game a little endearing.

That beginning... it has some potential. I think I can rewrite it. (WARNING: Paragraphs are ahead!) It all started with two of the greatest technical geniuses the world had ever seen. Advisor and D-Troit weren't just the greatest minds of the age and weren't just colleagues, they were also friends, brothers from separate mothers. To Advisor's daughter, D-Troit was almost like a second father. With their passions and powers combined, they reinvented the landscape of science, creating technological advances and marvels alike. Both were revered and beloved by the public. And then, one day, everything changed. One day, she was alive, wishing him good luck on his next experiment... but the next, she was lying lifelessly in a hospital bed, unsaveable and broken beyond repair. Advisor was devastated by the loss of his only daughter. D-Troit tried to comfort him, but at the end of the day, he likely only cared about his experiments and that the mourning was wasting valuable time that could be used elsewhere. The impact of the loss was obvious, but it didn't stop the train that was these men's inventions. Mere months after the event, the two created their most ambitious project yet: the dummies. These dummies weren't like anything they'd yet created: unlike those, these dummies were alive and sentient. Whilst they did have some shortcomings, like being rather callous in personality, or by dying if they were dropped from too high, they were still the men's magnum opus, for lack of a better term. Despite inventing these revolutionary devices, it did little to fill the void within Advisor's heart that his daughter's death had caused. He could fight these feelings off for a little bit, but eventually, they manifested into a deep depression spiral where he, admittedly, heavily considered joining her in death, But just as he made up his mind, he came up with a new idea. It was crazy. It was impractical. But if it worked, she'd be right back with him. One night, whilst his colleagues were occupied and busy, Advisor set off on his mission. First, he went to the cemetery where she was buried and located her grave. Next, he had several dummies dig the coffin out, extract human essence, and return the altered body and coffin into the ground, leaving behind no trace of it ever being tampered with. Advisor returned to the research base, with hope surging in his heart. He was so excited and hopeful that he didn't hear what D-Troit said to him on the way. He returned to a secret room, where the replica dummy of her sat lifelessly on a chair. She wasn't moving, but if this worked, that would change. He flipped a few switches, pressed a few buttons, and watched on anxiously. The green essence of human life flowed into her. Her eyes opened- "Advisor!" Advisor froze, and turned slowly around to find D-Troit in the room. His friend's face was red and flush with anger. "What are you doing?! When we started, we swore NEVER to inject human life within an artificial body! Stop the experiment NOW!" D-Troit slammed his hand onto one of a the control panels lining the room, but to Advisor's horror, he jerked sporadically about before falling face-first onto the panel. The sickening smell of burnt human flesh filled the factory as smoke wafted up from the man's body. Every witness was stunned in horror, so no one could do anything to stop a robotic claw from picking up his body and dragging it deeper into the machinery. Advisor ran to the 'EMERGENCY STOP' button and prepared to press it but before he could... "...Dad?" The sound of a soft, melodic voice interrupted his thoughts. He spun around to find the dummy, his very own daughter, standing upright and looking at him. The emotions Advisor felt when he saw that his underground project had succeeded overwhelmed his mind, and the thought of saving D-Troit was pushed to the back of his brilliant mind. "It's you...? It's really you...?" "Who else would it be, Dad?" Advisor wept tears of joy. The fruits of his labor had paid off, and now, he would reap the rewards. The two of them hugged, and there wasn't a dry eye that could be found amongst the witnesses. Advisor could practically feel himself floating. It was like he was in a dream... but that dream would quickly become a nightmare. The sound of screeching metal and screams of agony and rage interrupted the happy reunion. Something had torn straight through the manufacturing machinery, and that something was looking in. It was D-Troit, although he was now practically unrecognizable. His body had been disturbingly merged with a regular dummy body, a horrific fusion of both man and artifical intelligence. His new body was covered in blood, making him look even more disturbing. He pointed one of his crooked hands at Advisor, the other hand gripped around a bent metal pole. *"YOU. I TRUSTED YOU!"* He crawled inside, his bloodstained cape leaving a trail behind him. *"You and I made a deal that we were supposed to agree to. And when I tried to stop your insane plan, you left me for dead."* D-Troit got even closer to him, so close that Advisor could smell and see the blood inside of his mouth. *"You've taken everything from me. Now, I'm going to take everything from you."* he grabbed his daughter, raised the rod and then brought it down hard, knocking Advisor unconscious in a single stroke. When he woke up again, he was alone. D-Troit was gone. His daughter was gone. The bodies of the dummies that had helped him had been torn apart and lay on the ground in pieces. The screams of dummies and humans alike echoed around him, interspersed with crying and maniacal laughter. *Dear God,* Advisor thought, lying on his back and crying with guilt. *What have I done?!*

Upon watching the full cutscenes from both versions, I realized that MIA lost her original human life in a lab accident, implied to be the same incident that turned D-Troit into a cyborg (This was retconned in the 2D demake where she was already dead and in the process of having her soul transferred into a dummy). Her original human name was Michelle. Also, since dummies are made to endure harm and damage, this would actually add a layer on why the professor specifically turned his daughter into one: So that she had a more durable body and would be less likely to suffer a fatal accident ever again (But the developers messed up this aspect by giving CID fall damage) It’s actually similar to the backstory of Astro Boy and Mega Man.exe but with enough rewrites and thoughts to the story, it could have been more solid or even decent. But like Shane and Adam pointed out, the developers gave up and left the story and game on draft 1 without ever trying to polish it.

I think "Advisor" is not his name, but a title or nickname. Like he was D-troit's PhD advisor back then or something similar. I think the devs are just embarrassed of the original poop-joke name and don't want to say it. Simply calling him "prof Werken" would have made more sense tho. As for the different body shape and hair color, I'm pretty sure they wanted the intro to be a flashback to give time for D-troit's rise to power, so they made both characters seem younger. That's why he is his old self in the later "cutscenes". Also at first D-troit's hair is all black too, but then they forgot to adjust the dummified model in the intro so he has prematurely greying hair even before the intro skips forward in time. Tragic.
@zenksren82062 жыл бұрын
The "good" doc still looks completely off-model even if they were going for that though he looks better in that cutscene than the rest of the game. They were also evidently embarrassed of the original game's ending too where Cid basically calls the girl robot a loud ugly bitch

It would sense since the villain needs to build up his robot army and stuff. -the name B.M.Werken from the first game refers to Bayrische Motorenwerke, which is the original name of the german car company BMW. Crash test dummies are mostly used for testing cars, so it makes sense in a weird way to name the creator of cid after a car company.

There's one thing the game does better than the first one: it fixes the story. In the original D-troit was motivated by the fact his work was stolen by Werken/Advisor and so kidnapped MIA for revenge. HERE, instead they change it so the schism was caused by Werken using their robotics to save his dying daughter, and D-troit's attempts at stopping it leading to him becoming a cyborg (which was otherwise compeltely unexplained in the original, he just WAS a cyborg/dummy randomly), leading to him wanting revenge here because he blamed Werken. That's right, the shitty, worse sequel acually ddid something BETTER than the original.
