Thank you for showing not just the crash, but your human reaction to it. Most of us do get upset at first when something bad happens, especially to a favorite thing. Then we assess and some give up and some move forward. We got to see you go through that, and move forward rather than giving up. Best part was how you close with a thank you to the reason we are all here. Also, it was wonderful to see Abby working to help you feel better and see things weren't as bad as they first appeared!

Nate, thanks for sharing your accident with us. It just shows us how challenging and unforgiving flying jets can be. It looks like you bounced and tried to go around, but the jet had insufficient thrust and was too close to stall speed to enable the go around. Literally, not enough speed for a go around and not enough speed to salvage a decent landing. As a commercial pilot, the one big thing I miss, in flying RC, is having an airspeed indicator. With an airspeed indicator, you always know your margin above stall. In a low inertia RC plane, maybe the speed brakes are too much drag, when combined with the drag from the landing gear and flaps, such that the plane slows down so quickly, there's hardly enough time to stick a good landing, before your out of energy. Also, for a go around there's that much more drag you need to get rid of. I look forward to seeing you fly this plane again.

I think you absolutely nailed it! I probably need to land this with a significant amount of additional throttle if I’m going to have fuel tanks, flaps, and air brakes all in use at the same time! I’m grateful for comments like yours as I learn a lot from them! Thank you, and thanks for watching! 👍💯😎⚓️

Nate, I'm one of those "would of, could of, should of" guys after I crash (or "land" in a tree). Usually takes me several days before I finally stop beating myself up and just accept the loss and think about what I might have learned from the crash. Really, when you stop to think about it, it is only an expensive toy. 😊

It's a jet you got to keep your speed up on landing. I think you should be deploying the air breaks only after you've touched down to slow the run out. You're destabilizing the flight characteristics by deploying them earlier.

I have long noticed something you do in that landing patern. You can be at a really good altitude passing by, but as soon as you start your turn in to final You increase your altitude, leaving you to almost dive in once you're lined up with the runway. That gives you a glide path that increase your speed instead of bleeding it off. Especially when you try to make a nice landing right in front of the camera.
@TheRcSaylors
@TheRcSaylors Жыл бұрын
You’re exactly right about that! I’m not sure why I do this honestly. Maybe it has something to do with that tree line? I feel like having altitude to control airspeed is better than using throttle to control airspeed on that final. With depth perception being a big limiting factor, I can see how fast it’s “falling” as opposed to the alternative, I think. But honestly most of this is done subconsciously and I’m just thinking through the process now while writing my reply to you! Great observation though! 👍😎💯⚓️

Aw man that is a bummer! That Sabre is such a beautiful RC aircraft. As a fairly experienced flight instructor I would recommend going around anytime you have an unstable approach or a hard bounce like that. Often pilots will try to “save it” resulting in pilot induced oscillation (progressively worse bounces) and damaging / crashing the aircraft. Glad it doesn’t seem too badly damaged though and you’ll have it back up flying again soon.
@gregmcclure2640

Bummer Nate! Ultra light joint compound will fix the chips in the foam nicely! Those air brakes seem to induce some instability-maybe below stall speed?

Well that blows chunks… When no wind landings are rare, I tend to try to slow my planes down too much on final because of the visual I am used to when there’s a significant headwind. That’s when it can bite. I try to keep a bead on how responsive or mushy the sticks are getting… and of course - knowing a good minimum throttle position helps a lot. I’ve never flown an EDF; I have a question: Was a partially spent battery pack a factor? If that had been a fresh pack, would it have had enough thrust quickly enough to get above stall speed in time?
@TheRcSaylors
@TheRcSaylors Жыл бұрын
I definitely needed more thrust in hind sight, however I don’t believe it had anything to do with how much juice was left in the battery. It still had at least a solid minute in it if I needed to push it. Love your perspective on this matter! Calm days ending up biting us because we may be used to flying in wind! Never really thought of it that way! Boy, how an airspeed indicator could help us all!! 👍💯😎⚓️

Now I know they create quite a bit of drag. Thanks so much for sharing this, you may have saved quite a few models. I will set my speed brakes up on a separate switch to the flaps, so I can just open them after touchdown if needed. Cheers love your channel and honesty. Great to see the good with the bad. 👍

Flying RC means flying with distractions. Only way to fly RC with no distractions is on the simulator (RealFlight). I fly fullscale too, and there are tones of distractions there as well. You just gotta learn to tune them out; or if you cant, maybe choose another place, time, or aircraft to fly. As far as the landing goes, I would sugest controling your decent rate with throttle instead of elevator. That will allow you to settle into ground-effect already having a little bit of backpressure on the elevator, so that you can bring the nose up without balooning through your flare. It is all about bleeding off airspeed before letting the mains touch the runway. Tricky to do, because if you flare too high (outside of ground effect), you stall with no room or time to recover. If you touchdown without doing a good flare first, it is like skipping a rock off of a pond. Full scale does the same thing. Think of it like... transitioning the weight of the plane from the wings to the wheels, if that mekes any kind of sense, lol! Best thing you can do, get yourself a "basher", an EDF you dont care about, and put 6 or 8 batteries of nothing but landings through it every time you go out to fly. Nothing but touch-and-goes over and over again, until it is just second nature. That'll set you right, thats how I learned! Took me ages to get good at landings... still think i can use more practice, lol! Really really tricky to do, and harder then full scale, if you can believe it, lol! Good luck!

@RR-zq3mk
@RR-zq3mk Жыл бұрын
You must live near lots of people and are inexperienced maybe ignorant to rural life. Small airports such as this are perfectly fine to fly at especially if locals know you. Traffic volume is so low it’s perfectly safe. Besides most hobby flyers do have common sense to give right away to real aircraft when one is operating near by. I learned to fly rc at an airport like this. Rc flyers and full size pilots blended in perfectly.
@TheRcSaylors
@TheRcSaylors Жыл бұрын
100% incorrect! AMA does allow people to fly at full scale airports, given the appropriate steps are taken to do so And Permission is granted! Also, these full scale guys weren’t operating under normal circumstances and were flying well over the threshold required to radio in at our specific airport. This distracted bouncy landing was simply caused because of my focus on their conversation over the radio. That is all. Please, have a nice weekend! 👍💯😎❤️⚓️

I got to see Dale Snodgrass put on a show in the F-86 (an F-14) at NAS Oceana years ago. Thanks for understanding my friend! It seems that we have some pilots in our comments section that have apparently never crashed before! Never thought my videos would attract such Aces!! 👍😎💯⚓️

Hopefully I'm seeing things.. kinda looked like the front landing arm got bent slightly, it might have been because of the attachment to that servo because of how I saw it, because after you adjusted it and tried the landing gear it retracted fine. (Just my observation)

I fly EDF's a lot. Although your plane can be landed fairly slow, until you have more stick time with it, I would land going much faster. Fly it to the ground. Think F16 and land it the same way.

These comments are crazy dude everyone crashes and it sucks I crashed my friend's turbo timber last summer and got really upset because it wasn't mine and I'm a full scale pilot. Nobody saying the negative stuff has flown an rc plane before

Oh man Nate. I love watching your videos and your great reviews. You have lead me to many of my 20+ plane purchases. Promise NO judgement on the crash. You fly RC better than I ever will. It bummed me out that the comments were left in the video. Not saying I'm above saying things when I'm frustrated but I was like ooooohhhffff. Would have edited out those 2 comments. We are human....i know you were super frusterated. Pretty sure the training the Jets are doing is important and I'm sure when you calm down you would absolutely agree. Also I was bummed to hear the comment about random viewers walking up distracting you. Although it may have been completely true, If that viewer was close enough to hear, I'm sure it made them feel pretty crummy. Some of the people are attacking your flying which is not amazing but I would feel a ton better if you just apologized for the comment or edited it out rather than justifying it. Weve all been there and can absolutely relate. No reason to broadcast our less desireable reactions. Ive watched you crash multiple planes in other videoa and Ive always thought you handled it really really well. hope this is coming across how I mean it to and doesnt offend...

Now I am no pilot and I don't fly rc planes but it seems like you could have done much worse in your crash. It looks to me like the plane is repairable so at least it didn't get totally destroyed. Things can always be worse is what I tell myself in similar situations.

Those are cool I'm torn between paint jobs. It's not that bad price for the quality. They air breaks servos aren't that great seeing some people having to replace them. Still out of stock, I think. Hey, it happens to the best and that's fixable.

UGH...What a bummer! I would have thought to try jus 1/2 flaps and brakes for the first time, yer a maniac! ;) And almost too bad they can't be individually controlled by 2 different switches maybe? Maybe both too much, idunno. Gorgeous plane though, and looks fantastic in the air., and yeah, sounds pretty cool too!
