I agree. I sunk so much into CTR:NF VS MK8D, I enjoy them both. But the drifting is so much more satisfying in CTR, that said online if you mess up once or twice you are done against someone that knows what they are doing; whereas in Mario Kart, even if you are demolished at the start you still can catch up with items, something nigh impossible in crash. If they could find a balance between these two luck and skill gaps we'd have the best Kart racer of all time gameplay wise

Actually making an extremely good ranking system for online and fixing some items is the way to make CTR just in that ideal spot. That's because if all players in a lobby has the same skill level items start to be more relevant, making the gameplay even more frenetic. At higher skill some items start to have issues (not being fast enough to be useful), but it could be fixed

but if you "still can catch up with items" that makes it NOT SKILL BASED. which is kinda the entire point of what makes CTR stand out from mario kart. you can still catch up in ctr but you have to do it through skill. take a risk with a tough shortcut you been grinding and pray that the other guy wont (or wont be able to due to a beaker in the way or other players...perhaps a beaker that YOU strategically left there?). ctr is a honest to god competitive racing game (and nobody can take that away from it) inspite of looking goofy as all hell. but the skill it requires is undeniable (its not pick up n play , if youre aiming to be competitive). the game has depth. mario kart doesnt, im sorry

@@doubleclick4132 I didn't mean I want massive rubber banding or item boosting all the time, my gripe with Crash is if at the start of the race when everyone is relatively close, if you get pushed off or hit a few times in a row, first place is impossible, not difficult, impossible, because those who weren't caught in the scuffle are home free so long as they don't crash or fall off the course. Items being a bit more involved would help those who suffered at the start -- as being battered is not because you suck, it is what it is. I've been on both sides, managed to avoid the early scuffle and had smooth sailing, it's skill that I maintain my drift and stuff, but the risks I have to take vs the risks people who got caught up is very different. I know CTR is way more skill-based and competitive than Mario Kart, I will not deny it, and I enjoy both since they offer different kart racing experiences, but Mario Kart has ways to maintain involved throughout the race, CTR does not when you stumble, even if only once, and that's not as fun or engaging as at that point you are just racing to not be last, not to be first. Whereas the chaotic deceptively simple Mario Kart, anything can happen, which admittedly is also infuriating if you've been first the entire race only to be ganged up on at the end of the last lap. There is no perfect formula, which is why in my comment I said, IF there was a way to mix the skill with the luck/chaos, that would be perfect for me personally. (Sry for run-on sentences lol)

@@Wachalpharoh nah, i see what youre saying. its just that youre describing a very specific situation where those sort of items would be useful to get out of. however those same items would get abused in 95% of other situations that ARENT the initial pole position clusterfu*k . and since the non defensive items are usually given to people in the back, the people in the back and middle would be brawling with each other giving the people in the front EVEN MORE leeway. unless youre talking bout stuff like that giant bullet which is just plain unfair. any competitive game that has a high skill ceiling will inevitably have the people who are willing to really grind up front.if you took the time to master all the shortcuts you can catch up. theres been so many times when i was leading by half the lap and a clock or inconveniently placed nitro wrecked me right when i was about to take a shortcut and everybody caught up.(and bombarded me with everything they had to boot).shortcuts are always high risk high reward. sometimes theyre your undoing

As someone who's sunk a ton of time in both CTR NF and Mario Kart, I think MK9 should definitely take notes from CTR in terms of content as well as MK Wii and Double Dash in terms of depth, strategy and item balance. Also good job in making a video that doesn't just trash Mario Kart fans and act elitist about a kart racer. They included most of the CB characters from the CB universe just about, many kart customizations, and not just CTR and CNK tracks but also their own tracks! They also had free post launch content; the Grand Prix, CTRNF started off as a remake yes but turned into more than just a remake! ❤️ Mario Kart is great don’t get me wrong but Beenox really tried and cared about their players so much! Nice video! I've gotten both games when I first got my Switch because I loved CTR on PS1 when I was little, and of course, mario kart because it's mario kart. However, damn is CTR more fun to play. It's by and far the only game on the Switch I've spent hundreds of hours in because of the game play. Keep in mind that I tend to like challenges in gaming, (my favorite mario kart is DS with snaking and PRB, later installments were dead to me when you couldn't manually get boosts). The customization and unlockables are excellent, but by far, the best aspect is the driving itself, from basics of drifting, reserves, uturning, and even obscure techniques like drop boosts, SGs, etc. You can spend so much time mastering these techniques, and it pays off when it shows how easily you can lap a regular player online. That being said, Mario kart definitely has obvious pros to it. For starters, its online experience is way better, and the fps rate is much more stable than CTR. CTR online is mainly only viable if you join the community and add friends to race in private rooms. Matchmaking is a mess due to connectivity issues and skill gaps. For mario kart, it always feels like anyone could win, which is exciting for casual players, but can turn away more hardcore game fans since it's common to be literally cheated out of a win. Bottom line, if you want hardcore racing gameplay, CTR is better. If you prefer to play casual, get mario kart. I personally literally only bust out mario kart when irl friends come over because there is no other reason to play it over CTR

Yea, I can attest to the irl friend statement. Once you get the master wheels in CTR and can hold blue fire on every track, it becomes less fun to play with unskilled friends. Mario kart is more fun in those situations, because even bad players can be competitive at it.

I prefer the simpler mechanics of Mario kart by a mile. The drifting to me is a lot better in Mario kart because you can just hold it for however long you want and you don't get punished for doing so. While I agree that timing your boosts in CTR is more skill based, to me it's also significantly less fun then seeing how long you can hold a drift before letting go. Mario kart wins it for me for that reason alone.

I even prefer the baby characters ctrnf than in mk8d, because they don't cry and they are less of them. Plus with the Insane trilogy and crash 4, I have to say crash is back and he's not going everywhere every time soon. I was easily able to defeat all Oxide ghosts first try on the original CTR after mastering CTR NF. The lack of proper u turning and keeping reserves lead to a few mess ups, but even years after release I'm still amazed how well they got the original controls down.

CTR NF is probably my favourite racing game ever, and I sunk a ridiculous amount of time into it to the point people recognised my Xbox Gamertag in races. And that is because of how it controls, which won't be to everyone's taste. I think the cool thing about Mario Kart is that it's open to everyone, if you've got a basic interest in games, you should be able to pick up Mario Kart, understand it and have fun. Not to suggest that CTR is for "the elite" but it is slightly less open, but is probably a richer experience if you indulge in it. I was just lucky to grow up with CNK (which I know is not the good one but hey when not compared to the original CTR it's still a really serviceable racing game). CTR can be a bit forceful in its track design, I've learnt to love Dragon Mines but in reality, there probably shouldn't be a circle in the middle of the track where you have to put your hands in a death trap to turn tight enough for (or take an admittedly fun but rather luck based shortcut). And Turbo Track can die. But if you spend time getting used to CTR, it is probably the peak of that phenomenon a game can give you.

I'm a ps4 ctr owner but my girlfriend has a wii and let's me play with Mario kart wii, even if that's an older game, I still prefer the time I have with Mario, it alla comes down to one aspect for me, the difficulty. I can play Mario kart with people who never picked up a controller and still have fun, they have a chance to get a little race, but in ctr if you never played a game or are not used to that type of games you don't stand a chance, so I think I prefer MK because it's more "inclusive" and iconic, not to mention that even if a lot of people know crash, everyone knows Mario, so there's the icon factor I suppose.

Picked this game up after the free trial and i seriously can't go back to mk8 (Maybe except the battle mode as mk8 deluxe has the better battle mode.) There is so much to do in this game. There is a reason to keep playing the game (unlocking characters etc.) My only issue is the online. While i am not sure how it was before the free trial and sale the game is quite alive as of right now finding at least 2 players in a lobby each time i search.

Honestly, Mario Kart's track design is tragic compared to CTR. The shortcuts are far less obvious in CTR and actually require skill and mastery to pull of consistently. Racing in CTR is far more satisfying. Graphics are better in Mario Kart but only on Switch... PS4 and Xbox One graphics are exceptionally better.

Mario Kart is fun but has always been a baseline experience. There are a number of Kart games that are arguably better - Diddy Kong Racing and Sonic All Stars (and Transformed) come to mind. Good arguments... MK8D it's still superior to CTR by a 1minute mile. Difficulty is very much relative when both games offer difficulty levels VS the CPU, but if you argue that MK online is purely random based, because maybe you are not consistently getting 1st, perhaps you are simply not that good at MK8D online , sorry.

eh. MK8DX definitely has skill involved, sure, but the item imbalance & lack of short cuts can't be overlooked. I haven't played Crash Team Racing, but even comparing Mario Kart 8 to it's fellow games in the Mario Kart series, MK8 has a pretty low skill cap.

my only concern about MK8 at this point is the Kid level Controls. For starters I don't get why to this day that hopping is a thing in kart games. there should be an item like the feather to initiate the hop function and the drift buttons have its own functionalities. I see in CTR Nitro Fueled how the hoping mechanics assist the Karts to preform Hairpin turns, which I think its practical because some of the tracks in both CTR and MK8 have these ridiculous Hairpin and 360 degree turns. MK8 karts can never pull of Hairpin drift even if brakes are applied! I get that Nintendo wants to Eliminate majorly huge skills gaps in the games but IMO they over it. I've been playing MK8 for awhile and 200cc feels good but it obviously wasn't well tested to be really playable for everyone. Zooming so fast around corners will 100% of the time lead you to your death, or side off-road if not executed properly. Brakes don't help much either since they only slow you down but don't make you turn sharper around corners. CTR on the other hand applied those skillful mechanics and made a huge difference. Its save you from losing momentum and protects you from other rivals. Also they should add upgrades to karts in MK8 with sub special abilities

Although I played both mario kart and CTR as a kid, I had more mario kart than crash racing games inn general and I was better at mario kart than CTR (DS and Wii)......I have just come to accept that CTR is just better mechanically, map design, shortcuts, and speed running. When nitro fueled came out I didn't expect much but it's prob the best racing game out rn tbh and the fact that it's played much less than mario kart is kinda sad because it's a superior racer without being overwhelmingly difficult to play

@@Jdudec367 yes it is character roster it has almost every character from past games if not all and unlike mk8 skins arent saperete characters gameplay is based on preference if you more like simple kart racing mk8 if little more complicated ctr gamemodes ctr takes the win like adventure mode can teach you all little tricks and there is secrets like beenox boxes in each track if you collect all you get the crate character and in each area in adventure mode there is a golden egg if you get all 5 you get king Chicken now im not saying mk8 is bad or does Nothing better then ctr it has WAY better online in ctr if the host leaves Everyone is disconected and if yiu want to play with a friend you need to have same NAT type and mk8 has more items

What makes Mario Kart 8 DX so great is that it is far more "Pick Up and Play" than CTR. Anyone can play it almost immediately. CTR overcomplicates things with something as straight forward as drifting. When it comes to Kart racing...people just want to race and Mario Kart gives that to the player. It very much reminds me of Left 4 Dead VS Back 4 Blood. Left 4 Dead is so great and stands the test of time because you can literally pick it up, grab a gun and shoot your way to the end of the map. Make it to the end. Simple concept. Easy to understand. No unneeded bells and whistles. No unwanted "side features". No overcomplicated finish times to unlock something. CTR is fun! It's a gorgeous game! But Mario Kart 8 is the superior kart racer because it's for "everyone".
