Whoever had the idea for this series is a genius! Well done - love to watch it!

Good stuff, but on the clothing you should add a seam strength test. Maybe attach one cuff to a high bar, attach a weight to the other cuff and drop it. Then you can burn the sucker...!?!

using real bullets wouldnt make sense because in that case (unless it's like a .22 subsonic or some very low power bullet) the bullets will just penetrate the entire thing and he wouldnt be able to gradually check at what stage it failed. Also flamethrower tests would be an overkill, plus burning stuff with a flamethrower isnt really burning the stuff, it's burning a flammable liquid. So I think the blowtorch and the BB gun are good enough. Although, the way I would test penetration resistance is by using something like a 3mm metal rod attached to a force gauge and seeing at which number the protective gear fails and then comparing. Sure, it's not as fun as shooting something with a BB gun but it is more accurate.

Cool videos. Can you set better benchmarks with the abrasion resistance, like 15, 30, 45 seconds test intervals? The whole "grind, check, grind, check" could skew the test results...and we want each item to be tested to destruction in a fair and measured manner. Actually...what about throwing the F9 dummy out of a van at 60km/h to test abrasion resistance?
@FortNine7 жыл бұрын
Oh don't worry! When we count how long it took, we subtract the "check" time. The clock just runs continuously in the graphic because... well... it's easier. ~RyanF9
@Speedytrip6 жыл бұрын
Love these reviews but agreed that the experiment would be more valid if the sanding part was continuous as every check allows the temperature to drop as opposed to in a real life situation where the abrasion would be constant until it stop (and with nylon heat is an important factor). Also like the idea of having a dummy dropped off the back of a truck, not only to test abrasion but the strength of the seams. If they bust then all the abrasion resistance is gone. Keep up the good work!

I nearly wet myself when I saw this video uploaded as I'm just about to purchase this jacket from you. Unfortunately after watching this I now have to re-think my decision and will not be buying this, honestly I was most disappointed with the shoulder impact results than anything else. I can only hope you test the Olympia dakar 2.0 ASAP as that was my next jacket option. Either way keep up the great job
@Aleph10107 жыл бұрын
P.S I love how you are having lots of fun with this and trying to be as honest as possible even though it may actually cost you sales. I know it's not scientifically controlled and the results may be "skewed" but still it has "skewed" my purchasing decision so not sure if your boss will be too happy with the outcome. I have been a loyal customer for a long time and have spent a small fortune at your shop so no worries about customer retention, I'm still very happy with you as my preferred supplier. Thanks RyanF9

Ryan, I think it would be a really nice addition to this series if you added a leaderboard to each gear category a la Top Gear "star in a reasonably priced car" segment. You might have to work a way to quantify your metrics, but it would be super cool to see how these products stack up against each other. Also, just out of curiosity, what grit is the belt in your sander?

@zrouth7 жыл бұрын
While this was cool and fun, it seems a little gimmicky/cheeky. I say this because I love your channel and I'd like to see this test become something of the "moose test" for motorcycle gear. First off, the back would definitely fail in a real scenario, the bladder would move off centerline easy enough, and with that shit back protector you would definitely hurt yourself or break your back. So you saying it passed is a misnomer and not good for your subscribers who might think the jacket did ok. Second, we need a baseline so when you do these tests we have something to compare it to. Getting a decent 1-2 piece race suit shouldn't be too hard, and that would be a good baseline. Eventually as this grows you'll theoretically have a leather baseline and a textile baseline. Third, you guys rock. Keep it up!
@jonnycutrer45527 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan. Big fan of your videos. You've praised the Kathmandu in a couple videos for its value; how do you compare it to the Kilimanjaro? Looking for a good cold weather jacket and would love to know your take between the two.

Great video, and I am impressed. I would have expected a lot better impact protection from a 500$ jacket. Guess price is not all that matters. Weird tho that they would emphasize waterproofness over impact ? I would expect adventure drivers to fall more frequently then lets say tourers..
