In 1972, Shirley Chisholm ran for president of the United States of America as a Democrat. She didn't win, but this was not the beginning or the end of her career in politics. She held a congressional seat in the New York delegation for decades, and Shirley was a pioneer on many fronts. Today we'll learn about her life, her career, and her legacy.

Crash course's black American history has inspired me to research other nations' histories. it would be helpful and wonderful if crash course one day covered Chinese and indigenous histories too because they've experienced much conflict as well.

This crash course gives me hope for the future of humanity. It shows that even with all the setbacks, financial crises, supreme court decisions, etc. if people keep on fighting and given enough time change for the better is possible and will happen. Looking forward to see the first black woman in the oval office.

As a graduate student at the University of Texas, I was doing research in Exercise Physiology. One of the people involved in the research was a middle distance/cross country runner who went on to graduate studies at Columbia University. She became a documentarian. Shola Lynch went on to produce and direct Chisholm 72, Unbought Unbossed. A fantastic documentary.
