I feel you missed a big opportunity in this video, especially near the end in the section called "How religious practice in the US differs across race and class lines," where you could have mentioned Auguste Comte's understanding of religion as being a thing in which people orient their life in which he attempted to create the secular _Religion of Humanity._ It may be the case that you may have a video on the sociological aspect of what practicing religion does for people with the secularization of young people. Similarly, the author bell hooks has written that an aspect of Feminism is for people to have a healthy spiritual life, so there seems to be an aspect of practice there as well beyond the simple (badly formulated) question of God or no God.

Correction: Eve didn't sin because she 'tempted' Adam. Eve sinned because she ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil which was the one thing that God told them not to do. Both acted on their own will. Both are equally colupable. You need a different example.

You misquoted the Old Testament about Adam and Eve. Eve was created to 'help' Adam because he was alone (Genesis, Chapter 2 Verse 18), not to 'serve' him. Also, if Eve was created from Adam's body, then she too was in the image of God. Chapter 5 Verses 1-2 implies this by saying that Adam and Eve were one unit called 'Man'

@LesNasesdu387 жыл бұрын
Yep, I know that. And I'm assuming that if they chose Mythology instead of Religion, it's because by doing so they can keep a distance and prevent people to be offended. But by studying myths, they're also giving people data to gain perspective on their own beliefs without questionning them directly, but somehow implicitely questioning faith and religious insitutions without getting their hands "dirty". For example, the similarities between the the multiple creations of the world or the lives of some important religious figures may allow someone not to take what religions tell litterally. They're smart people at Crash Course, they know what they're doing :)

If you go to other parts of the world, those same figures you mentioned as all being 'white' tend to start looking like the people native to that region in the earlier art. In Cuzco, there are lots of depictions of Jesus and Mary and others where they look like the native people there. In Japan, Jesus tends to look more Japanese. The only reason Jesus, God and the rest look 'white european' in those European museums is because that's what the people painting them looked like.

Not really. I see where you're coming from, but the effects of, say, Catholicism are _vastly_ different than Buddhism. Catholicism was an institution with power, with the ability to force its own view of itself on the world and directly compete with other dominant institutions. Less-organized religions like Hinduism and Buddhism are more subject to individual or local interpretation, preventing them from having as much direct influence.

Emily, you should care. Whether you're a Dawkin's drooling fan boy or a smart atheist, religion affects every society you could attempt to assimilate into. There's no escaping that fact and the next generation will only have slightly better luck at it than you. I hope they go into the broader differences in later episodes. The reason why some religious laws look secular is because they originally were. Take "Thou shall not kill" as an example. That was ripped STRAIGHT from the Hammurabi Code, a secular set of laws and rules created by the Mesopotamian king Hammurabi. Jewish law especially was highly influenced by the Near East and Middle East because of the Babylonian Exile, as Babylon was a part of what we call Mesopotamia, and would therefore ascribe to the Hammurabi Code. Hell, most if not all of the Torah was written down during the Babylonian Exile, though a lot of it had been oral tradition up till that time. When Cyrus the Great freed the Hebrews and they went back to Palestine, those laws just became part of their culture, hence things like the Ten Commandments and pretty much everything law-related found in the Pentateuch.
@justicar3477 жыл бұрын
SoulFire39 I think your argument has a small flaw. Hammurabi Code was, to my understanding, suppose to have been passed down from the gods. In ancient times there was not a lot of distinction between secular and religious authority. The old testament has laws that could be seen as only serving secular purposes, and yet were recorded in religious text because there was not really a distinction.
@ActiveAdvocate17 жыл бұрын
Very true, now that I think about it. There was no such thing as church/state separation because the church WAS the state. Most nations were theocratic, or at least to a certain extent, at the time.

Well, since Christianity is discussed a lot in this video, it's necessary for someone who knows a lot about it to point out what has been wrongly taught by this video about Christianity.. I may not know much about sociology, but I do know THAT MUCH about Christianity: -Not all denominations in Protestant Christianity believe that the Ten Commandments are still to be held by the Church nowadays. In short, only some of them do. Catholicism has their own Ten Commandments that are different from the Ten Commandments that both Jewish religion and Protestant Christianity believe in. I don't know what Orthodox Christianity does teach about this stuff. Btw, you're gonna know what the word 'denomination' in Protestant Christianity actually means later on if you KEEP ON reading my text. -Calvinism / predestination: a teaching in Christianity that teaches that The Lord and Savior Jesus Christ had died on the cross only for saving the 'elects' a.k.a people whom the Father in heaven has chosen to save from their eternal punishment in the lake of fire after the Final Judgment has taken place. All the 'non-elects' will be thrown into the lake of fire for the rest of eternity. -In Christianity, both men and women are created in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27). However, women are created as helpers for their husband indeed (Genesis 2:18). -Both Adam and Eve caused the original sin, even though it's true that it was Eve who caused Adam to eat the forbidden fruit as well (Genesis 3:6; 1 Timothy 2:14). In Christianity, it's taught that because of Adam, everyone has sinned (Romans 5:12). -Are women not allowed in speak in local churches? The apostles made it that way since it was how the culture went at that time and they didn't want societies at that time to view Christianity negatively: 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 {NKJV} [Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.] -Cain was marked with a darker skin...?? C'mon, do I really need to tell you guys what is meant by God marking Cain?? Genesis 4:13-15 {NKJV} [And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.” And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.] -In Protestant Christianity, there are a lot of movements and denominations. The term 'movements' here refer to Christianity movements and these movements differ by what their teachings concentrate on. Examples of this include the Evangelical movement which concentrates their teachings on evangelism and the Charismatic movement which concentrates their teachings on spiritual gifts. Lutheran, Evangelical, Charismatic, Methodist, and Baptist are some of the Christianity movements that exist worldwide. The term 'denominations' here are indeed what the video has taught about, except the fact that they're not the same as the Christianity movements. Most denominations belong to a Christianity movement, but every denomination has their own teachings and interpretations of the Protestant Christian Bible. Examples of denominations include Seventh-Day Adventist and Indonesian Church of Christ. All local churches in Protestant Christianity belong to a denomination. -Pentecostals aren't sects, but are instead what a number of denominations in Protestant Christianity would refer themselves to. ...it's indeed true that the people of God will be destroyed IF they lack knowledge (Hosea 4:6).. to tremble before The Lord is actually the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction (Proverbs 1:7). The Protestant Christian Bible, or just the Bible in short, is actually the Word of God that's been useful for guiding His people in righteousness 🙏🙏 (2 Timothy 3:16).. People who are believing unto God have His Word guiding their everyday life... With having knowledge of the Word of God, living a blameless life in front of The Lord is not an impossible thing to do...! Know that the only God and Savior Jesus Christ loves you and wants you to come to the knowledge of the truth and to be saved in His name (1 Timothy 2:4)! There's indeed no salvation aside from in His name (Acts 4:12).. just accept Him as your Lord and Savior and you'll be saved (John 3:16; Romans 10:9). The grace of The Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with all of you every day...! 1 Timothy 2:3-4 {NKJV} [For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.]

Hey, incorrect detail here (and I don't mean to be pedantic), but not all Methodists and Baptists are Evangelical, and some Lutherans and Presbyterians are Evangelicals. Evangelicalism is an interdenominational movement, not a category of denominations at large.

In my graduate work, I approach religion as a social technology that acts as a facilitator of moral support to individual families. The family is the fundamental social unit, and religious practice is the number one indicator of the success or failure of the family. Religious practice contributes to more pro social outcomes than any other structure. So I don’t focus on whether religion is “true” or whether god exists, I look at it mostly sociologically, which it turns out to be one of the most powerful and effective technologies that humans have invented. How can anyone be against socially progressive and prosocial technologies?

It's actually fun.... reading the hate comments.....where one tries to prove that there version of god is the best...and other stating that it doesn't even exist at all.....I mean common every one loves to fight...I do it some times for fun....

pretty good video but placing vajrayana buddhist iconography alongside "Chinese emperors were believed to have a mandate from heaven..." looks really bad. This sort of channel should not be making these kinds of mistakes. Further, the distinction between Churches as Durkheim understood them is contrasted here with "sects" in a way that is new to me and doesn't make much sense, especially because the sects that you list are perhaps better understood as denominations within a Church (Christianity).

Let people belief in whatever religion they want. The wise and good among them will find strenght, purpose, compasion, and comfort in their beliefs. The fools and the cruel among them would be so no matter their religion or lack theiroff.
@najex17 жыл бұрын
Not that I disagree, but I was making a point about letting people be. Not forcing comfrontation between ideas. More specificly: when people use their religion as a reason to do good (which I define as causing happiness in others and yourself), you don't need to point it out if you think those reasons are flawed.
@najex17 жыл бұрын
When it comes to morality, I don't think their exists a single best 'truth'. Theirfor I am hesitant to force comfrontation between them. The key word you used is 'allowed' to compete, not forced to compete. If an idea has a possitive effect (again, defined as short and long term happiness) it shouldn't need to justify its existence beyond that. Ideas and believes should serve humanity, not the other way around.
@jacksonfurlong37577 жыл бұрын
I'd prefer it if we'd stop spreading superstitious lies, particularly to children. You don't need religion to find wisdom or do good works. In fact, your statement is almost the complete opposite of the truth. A good person will do good deeds regardless of religious prodding whereas religious convictions are an excellent way to make an otherwise good person do something truly monstrous. History is replete with such things

Well said.

"You don't need religion to find wisdom or do good works." I agrea with this, absolutely. The rest not so much. Are you refering to the idea that a good deed done for non-rigious reasons are somehow more valuable? I don't agrea. To me actions matter, not the underlining reasons behind it (so long as they aren't forced by an outside force). Or are you saying that religion can't lead to doing good deeds? In this video the example of the Southern Christian leadership comference was given as a supporter for the civil rights movement. I don't think that terrible acts in the world will significantly degrease if religion were to disapear. Only the reasons why they are done would change. Patriotisme, duty, justice, hate, short sightedness.

You know considering there is a huge number of people not living in US, you could have used world wide references rather than just American references. It was a great start to the video which ended on a bit confusing note.

"...To serve and obey Adam?" Your show is great and seems to be mostly non-bias however, this is an ignorant statement. Might I suggest that your show research this further to get an accurate definition of the creation of man and the original marriage relationship.
@TheAfc93r5 жыл бұрын
Rachel Kimball you are correct my lady. It just said Adam needed a helper to harvest the land. I guess Chapter 2 verse 18 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” is up to each interpretation.

Thank you for a wonderfully informative video! What's your take on the "Mormon" Church and Church of Scientology? Are they indeed Churches or Sects? Are they even worth mentioning seeing as they are, in lack of other words, newer than well established Churches such as Christianity and Islam?

Bogdan Tabacaru I don't know about Scientology. But, as a Mormon, I can easily tell you, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Christian.

Any recommendations on religious topics that have good video quality and hosts? I am partial to those that aren't just someone talking on screen only, which is what I see a lot do. It can be liberal or conservative views. I do like how crash courses video style mixes up the visuals.

I love your videos, though every now and then I disagree with something said. However, those are always minor things, and I don't fault you for them. What you said about Eve in this video though... It's wrong. Eve wasn't made to serve and obey Adam--otherwise she would have been made from his foot. Instead, she is made from his rib--his side--because she is equal to him, and they are meant to serve and love one another.

I believe there are three main criteria that religion, as we currently know it, has to meet in order to survive past the modern world: 1. Religion must become more philosophy and less mythology. 2. It must be more spiritual and less dogmatic. 3. It must be more compassionate and less hypocrisy.
@Saint_nobody7 жыл бұрын
Seems legit.

Jane Black......What are you talking about? All mainstream religions put actually pretty heavily emphasized responsibility on their members to act and live by in life. Ever hear of the Commandments?
@RannonSi7 жыл бұрын
Navesblue There're a few denominations that have the beliefs that your fate is predestined, that you can be absolved from your sins or that once saved you're always saved. These are a few with (on the surface at least) in which you can find moral shortcuts.
@26yd17 жыл бұрын
You're describing spirituality actually... And that makes sense, "Religion" can't survive the amount of knowlege any random people can get in a developped country without fading into some spirituality.

I'm sorry but UNITARIANS are "more disadvantaged"??? Not in MY experience. They tend to be more highly educated, thus upper middle class. Though they would thus tend to be amongst a minority of the general American population. That aside, as a college educator in religion, I have to say this is a GREAT overview of Religion & Society and I am adding it to resources for my students.

I’m surprised how civil it seems so far in the comments, and the small number of dislikes. I personally like the show, but it has gotten a lot of hate in some previous episodes, and I expected similar hate for this topic, because it is also controversial. It’s nice to see people be civil for once though.

Religion: Created by men, for men, more specifically for priest and wealthy people. I think this was needed as way for people to create a stable society and have a sense of purpose against all the famine, food shortage, and defense against wild animals and nature. as HUMANS we have a huge imagination to cope with things in life we do not understand. Religion was a solution to those needs. But as we grew in numbers, learned about the world, we have dealt with most of these life threatening issues and I can understand why their is a decline in religion. As an atheist, who was born Catholic and raised Mormon (come at me) I was raised knowing different religions that oppose each others beliefs such as history but do side with people coming together and have a strange social circle. But now that technology has solved most of life threatening issues, we no longer need belonging as we have connected with people online or through social apps, work, and school. I'd like to hear arguments!

In Islam, women aren't banned from positions with the clergy except being the Imam (which is the one who leads the prayer in Islamic Prayers) because that's just how prayer is in Islam. But other positions which are higher women take a part of it and actually had took it in the past. To be accurate; there is no such thing as relegious positions in Islam or an order for the positions. Thanx for the video!

Mario mario I'm not going to convince you, but they are not banned in Islam. Sure, there is no women who are prophets, but that's just because of the natural hard missions that used to be given to prophets, not that women can't handle hard missions ( feminists don't come at me) but being a prophet who spreads the massege of God in a society that not only doesn't respect women but doesn't respect God.

I always felt it was ironical that the accepted use of the words denomination and sect in the modern lexicon, generally mirrors existing positive and negative viewpoints about a given religion. Especially when one considers the evocative association which accompanies each designation and its corresponding religion. Generally positive viewpoints seem to earn that religion's subcategories a more benign descriptor, and vice versa. A bit o' bias maybe? Hmmm?
