I’m in a similar situation. I’ve had a queen vanish on me and loads of queen cells have popped up. So I fed my nuc and wow they were mega robbed! Lots of fighting - crazy. Amazing video. And yeah UK weather right now is rubbish

Hi Bro, no their actually German made by Stehr www.bijenhof.be/en/category/Nucleus+hives+stehr But I run DADANT frames so they do good. Been using these for a few years now. They seem to last pretty good too! Except when you drive over a couple!! 🤡 Just to add it’s possible Lyson May sell them but I don’t know! 🤓

Could we graft chestnut on to other tree types.. ?
@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 Жыл бұрын
Generally no, the tree has to be the same family to take a graft (sadly) but it’s a great thought though!!

Spring splits work better because they have something to work towards, plus feeding isn't such an issue. Late splits need lots of feeding and attention and haven't you got enough on your plate already?
@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 Жыл бұрын
I would agree but summer splits are as necessary for me here, if not more!! Also acceptance is better late summer. If you don’t make splits in the spring, swarming is greatly elevated. In the summer it’s just free bees doing nothing!!

@@richardnoel3141 The tyranny of distance is showing again, I forgot that you are in France, with everything lovely and green. Here in Australia, late summer has everything burnt to a crisp, and there is either bare earth or a distinct crispy straw taint to the scenery, Unless you are in the mountains or doing pollination of irrigated crops, there is little forage. For this reason the early spring swarming season is the best time to make splits.

Weather has been crazy here the past week. It has been miserably hot then two days ago we had a thunderstorm with 4 to 5 inch hail. Lots of new roofs going to be put on around our area. Finally going to pull my honey this weekend. Hopefully it will be a great harvest. Looking forward to seeing you at Kamon's new conference.

Oxydendrum is already sold in European garden center. Not sure we want to spread it around without control to make and honey harvest out of it. I don't see why we should :D. We've imported already quite some 💩without a long term vision.

Really would like to know how you protect those apiaries from robbers. I have great land 15 minutes from home but no way I'll put more boxes there. It seems every beekeeper around here has to keep bees very close from home and protected.

Richard, what is the advantage to plastic inner covers, from wood?
@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 Жыл бұрын
Hi Tim., personal choice really, but in terms of practicality and cost its way cheaper. you can also look through the plastic cover and see the bees underneath . thermal differences, couldn't say. we put polystyrene above so very little humidity issues.

Hey Richard, thanks for the video!! For the varroa treatment, do feed (pollen patties or syrup) the colonies to encourage laying after you release the queen from the queen cage ( ie after 21 days of trapping)? Thanks
@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 Жыл бұрын
Hello Yakladious, yes I do, I will be feeding Pollen sub after I’ve released the queens as well as a little 1:1 Sirop. There is still plenty of time to raise good bees and pollen substitute will kickstart the queens back in to laying. I will also be trying the Supplement Apis Biologics to add to the pollen sub.

Thanks Richard. I've ordered my italian cages to trap the queens this year, as I've been inspired by your varroa management. Thanks for sharing and providing all the valuable advice over the seasons! Best wishes, Yohanna

Hi Melanie, this year is like soo different! We haven’t had the heat and temperatures this year and the spring trapping campagne was successful over 200 queens in each apiary. Amazing how it can be so different over two years, however there’s still time but we don’t think it’s going to be anyway as bad at the moment. 😎🙌🐝
