My cousin and closest friend died in that crash and I was at the scene the next day. A lot of these threads relate to a bad judgement call, but speaking as pilot with an IFR rating, the weather was the 1st link in the chain of the flight. A strong line of storms passed through OWA 20 -30 minutes before the hawker started their approach. There is no control tower so you broadcast on the local frequency. Weather conditions are broadcast continuously. The wind switched to a tailwind which keeps his airspeed constant but adds groundspeed which increases landing distance. The airspeed indicator showing 10-15 Kts less than the groundspeed should have triggered the pilot to act because he was not seeing what he expected. This was his 1st shot at interrupting the accident sequence. Pilots are trained to consider every landing to be a "go-around" unless everything checks. Once on the runway-YOU STAY THERE. The pilot was slow to react and was applying brakes and there is a 10-12 second gap in the CVR where the pilot realizes he will over-run the tarmac and have to get towed out of the 1000 ft grass field. This is the 2nd chance to break the chain. Had he kept the Hawker on the ground, it would have come to rest 200-300 ft into the grass. That plane is very well built and the gear would have held. The pilots would have filed a report with the FAA and that would be that. Every airplane is required to carry the operating manual for that plane. Every imaginable contingency is covered from normal flight to spins. What's not covered is executing a 'go-around" once you are on the ground and your energy is diminishing. When he finally got the power back up, the massive flaps were still in the highest drag position for landing and the co-pilot was low time in that model and was behind in raising the flaps. Ground effect over the 1000 ft field they could have walked out of, and then a wing clips some comm antennas and that was that. It was and remains the worst day of my life.

CJ, the captain, was one of my flight instructors. I won’t sit here and try to make excuses as unfortunately the accident was a case of pilot error, but I do want to put it out there that he was a good person, and a good pilot. For whatever reason they made a judgement call that day, that was the wrong choice. But I am very thankful to have been able to fly with him. I remember the day I heard about this and to this day it still hits me hard. RIP CJ, and to all who lost their lives in the crash.

The pilots make their living with takeoffs and landings, once at altitude and course is set, the aircraft is switched to autopilot. After my late husband retired from the USAF he was employed as an radar engineer at a Marine Air Base. When an aircraft crashed, killing both pilots, an investigation was launched to determine the cause. The ground to pilot tapes were pulled and my husband was among several who listened to them. I asked him what went on just before the crash, thinking that it must have been yelling and chaos. He told me that almost every time, the two people inside were calm and professional and then the tape went blank.

Yeah, my intention was not to 'diminish' the tragedy that a plane catastrophe is. Comparing ways of dying is not a grateful subject. It's just that my personal point of view is, that worst death is a slow process where you simply know that each next day/week/month can be only worse than previous, and that there is no hope for any other scenario. I don't know about "NEVER." Time can be a valid consideration when it comes to safety and prudence. I assume in this case, the copilot was referring to the worsening weather. Being from that neck of the woods, a few minutes can make a big difference. Maybe the pilots didn't have a good reason to consider time a factor in this case, maybe they did, but there are occasionally good reasons to acknowledge that your time is not infinite and that taking too much of it might cause a safety issue. Take Avianca Flight 52 for example. Those pilots and the 73 people killed when they ran out of fuel waiting to land and crashed needed someone in the cockpit to say, "The sooner you get us there, the better."

Dear God In Heaven! The passengers on the plane most likely thought, "once the plane landed on the runway, they were okay!" Every time I watch a video of a plane flying in bad weather or landing in bad weather never seems to end well! Listening to the audio of the pilots before crashing was extremely horrifying, to say the least! I saw this video before, but I wasn't sure if I did until the end of the video! I was on a flight back from the Cayman Islands to Miami Nice flight till we got over land first rain then some turbulence finally the pilot came on and said there were thunderstorms in the Miami area ( female pilot to boot) no disrespect but it wasnt very reassuring. She indicated she was turning on the fasten seatbelt light and we would be arriving on time. She said 20 minutes till touchdown. Well as we got closer the weather got EXTREMELY nasty. You could tell everyone was getting a bit on edge. We had been decending all the time. I mean it was rough Thunder and lighting like crazy the plane was shaking at the thunder crashes im not so sure the plane wasnt hit by lighting. UP down side to side wings tipping back and forth engines thrusting and slowing Women began to gasp and Im man enough to admit i was scared shitless. I mean as we started final approach and the gear went down it got so quiet in the cabin we were all praying when we finally were able to see the ground it became evident how she was literally demanding the plane to obey her controls. Even at i would say 100 feet as we crossed over the runway the plane was fighting cross winds, I literally thought we were gonna die. You could have heard a pin drop. She managed to center up and the plane felt like it dropped the last 30 feet out of the air we hit hard but as I am telling this story alls well that ends well. Honestly the most frightened I have ever been in my life.

I've listened to the uncut CVR recording many times and every time that last final grunt from the First Officer as he braces for death gets me. It is his last little wimper of life as the ground fills his screen and he MUST know, it's over. The mind boggles on what must have been his final thoughts.

He was engaged, so his final thoughts were probably about his wife to be, all the times they were going to miss out on, and how she was going to feel about things. Also the sound of his grunt makes me feel like he knew he was about to get severely injured at least, or experience great pain. He could have had some hope that he would pull through. The NTSB classified the crash as unsurvivable though, there was no chance.

As for why they decided risking death was worth it, they took that to their graves, but I assume their combined fatigue was a factor. Getting poor sleep can impair you enough that it's as if you had a few drinks, and that's just for the average person - these pilots both had sleep disorders.

I’m from owatonna. I had just graduated high school that year and was heading to college that fall. I was asleep that morning and our house is in the flight path he took to the runway. It flew over my house so low it woke me up. I got to the window in time to see it pass over. I thought “wow that’s a decent sized plane and he’s pretty low. Must be landing at the airport” later that morning my mom called me to tell me about the crash. I’ll always remember that day.

Basically Duty Time under Part 117 is very under observed in this type of operation. This was a Part 135 operation and this flight was an ON Demand flight. Pilots maybe were waiting for a while to get going or they were finishing other missions. Either way Fatigue is a trap that this type of operation fall victim too quite very often.

Normally these pilots actually had pretty good behavior, they were being unusually impatient that day and making poor decisions, in the official NTSB report that was chalked up to being caused by fatigue. Apparently both pilots had sleep disorders unbeknownst to each other or their airline.

It remembers me a flight in Europe on a CJ2. Beautiful day, no passenger, just going for maintenance, we were TOO relax. All easy, ATIS for arrival was good. Then we started the ILS approach, we were not expecting to break through the clouds that low, we waited for the minima, and the runway jumped out at the minima! I closed the throttles, but the glidepath was not standard, we were fast, I kept the speedbrakes to the end, the runway was wet, I managed to land at the beginning of the runway and applied full brakes...the antiskid was flipping up my feet and I was 80% sure we couldn't do it but we did. Best lesson for me. Even if it looks like an easy flying day, don't release the pressure. Every flight is a challenge, and it is precisely on that day that the troubles arrive. Now that's what I say on my briefings when all lights seem too green 🚦 About the captain decision, I totally understand...I almost did it that day on the runway, in fact I should have go around on short final when the runway jumped at us but you know...from my sofa now it's easier... The right decision sometimes hangs by a thread. RIP to them, they paid more than the price...

The only time you do a go around is if you are either too high and cant land, or if you touch down way too far along the runway and decide 1 or 2 seconds later that you need to lift off again. You dont decide to do a go around at low speeds and while nearing the end of the runway if you need speed to take off.

Going around when already on the runway is commonplace, especially in flight training. Many scenarios can arise such as other traffic, animals, cars, etc. or even something as simple as coming in too fast and bouncing it. But there’s a point where the decision is critical. It’s important to have it made for you on landing as it is on for abort on takeoff. Remove the guesswork.

You pick a no-go point. Runway contact might be that but usually isn't. Thrust reverser deployment is a common one if equipped. Nosewheel contact, brake application, passing a particular taxiway, spoiler deployment, airspeed... Consider go-around obstacles, runway length and braking action. Also reject early, like airborne, if touchdown will be passed some fixed marker which usually defaults to the runway's touchdown zone, but not always. There's too much to consider in a split second. Usually it's so routine you don't have to think about it, but you should always think about whether or not you should think about it.

I'm the same way regarding voice recordings. It puts you into the shoes of somebody in a position you would never imagine yourself being in, and there's so much you can learn about the human condition, as well as modern safety practices. They show you the range of how people deal with and react to imminent disaster. In this case the first officer's reaction is much more intense and primal, whereas the captain maintains at least some composure. We all like to think that we would be cool and collected even in the face of certain death, but we all know that without going through a lot of grueling trials in life, we would probably never be as calm and collected as we would hope to be.

It is well expressed, and I agree except for I am not sure the captain was all that calm really. Even before they lifted off again there was some very heavy, ragged breathing and I believe that is him, but could be wrong. He may not have been as vocal, but it is possible his heart was crashing against his chest the entire time, particularly as he was fully aware that it all depended on him. His reaction may have been more muted, but certainly affected in a highly visceral way it seems. His mouth may have been dryer than a bone in the Mojave desert. and therefore he was physically unable to utter a sound...just watching this my own almost was! Conversely, the first officer (a much younger man of only 27) having less responsibility put on him, was perhaps somewhat comforted by the vast experience of the pilot and the additional relief of not being the one to have to get them out of this, so was not heard until literally that last second "ohmygod!!!" (shit, he ain't getting us out after all, it looks like) In the rare event of someone surviving something like this on the flight deck or cockpit,(it has happened), I really would love to hear about the thoughts going through their head. Like in almost that exact ohmygod position, that brief instant staring into almost certain death but coming out somehow. It is fascinating, if a morbid curiosity,

A big part of operating any vehicle is accident avoidance, but I feel it's best to train on avoiding bad accidents but also allowing non threatening accidents to occur. Similar to driving a car, I've seen many times on the freeway where a driver slightly veers into an adjacent lane, only for the car in that adjacent lane to overreact and turn the wheel sharply and spin out of control to avoid an accident that would have the slight impact of a few mph differential. Just take the slight hit and have insurance take care of it. Teaching the pilots when to do a runway overrun would have saved lives.

INCIDENTS, 'accidents' are unavoidable. the sooner people change the terminology the better. Hazard perception is about acknowledging those things that can be a threat (both ways) and prioritising the hazards, people go into panic mode for the most part on the roads because they are ill equipped to operate the machinery and the environments they find themselves. This particularly applies to the US which has an appauling standard of driver training and shows in the killed and seriusly injured figures. Saying take the hit is a dumb comment because the natural thing for people is to veer away from the percieved danger. What input you have at that juncture is a huge determining factor as to outcome, even so called professionals did precisely that in that the captain veered away from the problem instead of taking the hit of a low speed end of runway incident (at worst) People also fail to take into account risk hpmeostasis, people taking greater risks because they feel safe(r), this is inherrent in motorvehicle driving and when people don helmets/wear PPE with worse outcomes because of that due to the PPe not being effective in the increased impact forces diue to the extra risk taking (e/g/ driving at higher speeds) In an aircraft similar also occurs with risk not being managed correctly and hazard perception not fully understood nor acted upon. factors like fatigue have next to zero back up in terms of addressing that issue if both operators are in same boat, but fatigue should not be a factor if rest periods are correctly adhered to and those operating are fit to do so. That the pilots here failed on the very basics and compunded with another poor judgement tells you all we need to know regards how this is so important to keep on checking, analysing and making sure we take ourselves out of scenarios before they unfold and not compunding one error with another.

@Wreckanize: reminds me of when several deer materialized in the middle of the road while I was driving in a canyon at night. I slammed on the brakes but didn't swerve. Very minor damage to the hood of the car after hitting them at low speed but better than panic swerving out of control.

I always deliberately crash my car so that I will know what to do if I ever accidentally crash my car. I can’t get insurance anymore.
