I'm not sure where these counties are, but I report all my sold eggs to the US government so that I can write all their feed, pens, fences, meds, etc, off my taxes. I lost over $1200 on my chickens last year. It looks like I'm going to have a loss again this year. If the government wants to take away my livelihood, then I'll just buy some more chickens.

The only thing I had to buy is the hardware and chicken wire. Oh and I don't buy chicks, I raise my own and it's still not profitable (I break about even) but so rewarding.

Former property appraiser from a county tax assessor never heard of it Egg tax, there is a timber tax if you cut timber. Counties must be losing money so they have find ways to find it. Glad i left the county wasn't paying much and you have to go to school every 2 yrs for week.

My city requires a yearly registration of all animals and each category has a different fee to go along with the registration. You can't just register a flock, you have to register each chicken individually so a small flock get extremely expensive really fast.

Ok - part of the cost of eggs is also buying, feeding and housing the chickens, it's the hourly rate of the worker who has to tend to them DAILY, and the cost of packaging and transporting the eggs. If I do that math I'd say the tax assessor owes me some money, not the other way around because I charge a lot of money to handle chicken crap and feather dust every day, and as far as the government is concerned I'm feeding them a premium highly organic feed that has been personally blessed kernel by kernel by God himself. Spendy stuff. Also, in the name of animal rights my chicken coop is pretty much a palace.

There was a time when I looked into having my chickens declared officially as emotional support animals - as I recall it was a prohibitively expensive idea when multiplied over a half dozen chickens, and I would have to declare in writing that I suffer from a mental disability I do not possess. I decided that would be something that would come back to bite me in the ass some day and did not go forward with it. Two years after this, we moved to a different state and now live in the county area where not owning chickens is stranger than owning them. Rooster crows and egg songs here are music to our ears.

Something needs to be done to the people who are hiding their income. I think the real problem is that people who who produce food for them selves or others are being discouraged and even stopped.
