I have to say I'm impressed as an engineer and an owner of a 1977 Ford truck (same design). Clearly the safety restraints did not work as intended or the driver would not have hit the wheel and the passenger's knees would not have hit the dash. Still very survivable compared to the K20 4X4 that sheared off the front axle, buckled the frame and had severe impact to both occupants heads. I thought that series of Chevy truck was pretty good except for the rust issues and gas tank design but that crash test video makes me glad I picked the Ford back in 1977. Mine came from Babylon Ford....just down the road from the one in this video...Newins Bayshore Ford (both on Long Island in New York). Still have mine after 37 years.

I wasn't expecting anything very good, this being a late 70s truck. I've looked through lots of old crash test data and pre-1990s light trucks, SUVs, and vans usually do poorly. I got the dummy measurements for this test. Driver HIC 651, Chest G's 48. Passenger HIC 587, Chest G's 32. This equates to a risk of severe injury of about ~15% for the driver and less than 10% for the passenger. The maximum allowed scores for cars made from 1982-1997 (I think) was HIC 1000, Chest G's 60 on each occupant - in this exact crash scenario: 30 mph into a wall. The test was conducted on March 20, 1980 if anyone was wondering. So, in summation, this truck did well. Driver and passenger would likely not suffer serious injury. Better than most 1979 vehicles. And as for the 1979 Ford vs. Chevy crash tests, the Ford appeared to do better. Data for the driver dummy was lost in the Chevy test, but the passenger dummy recorded a HIC 710 and a whopping 68 Chest G's. Which means that the Chevy's passenger risks serious chest injury. driver would be in serious trouble from the top of the steering wheel hitting his throat and collapsing his windpipe, which could be a potentially fatal injury. the ironic thing is that these f-series had tilt steering as an option. so, the position of the steering wheel during a crash could make a diff between life or death.

Joseph K It doesn’t! New trucks have crumble zones in the front, so more energy is absorbed there. That means there’s less forces in the cabin, and going toward you. Even though it might look like this truck does better than the newer F150s, it really isn’t!
@hanswind724
@hanswind724 Жыл бұрын
@@techguy-od2re Crumple zones *might* let you survive impact, but they won't save limbs, legs especially. A lot of cars merely don't have crumple zones at all, just any body piece molded in plastic is called a crumple zone now. Both dummies logged a mere 40 and 38 Gs in this crash, pushing a 10-15% serious injury risk, per NHTSA standards. The only reason I'd see this truck 'fail' compared to newer ones today is how the driver's side seatbelt broke loose and let the dummy ride face-first into the wheel.

CaptainTripsz So what makes it "super"? Another thing that's interesting is that with my truck it doesn't say "Camper Special", "Super Camper" etc anywhere I just wonder if that stuff changed in 1979?

Dave McLain What makes it Super is the extended wheelbase for bigger slide in campers. Notice when they zoom into the bed. The passenger side wheel well looks different. That is the spare tire location accessible by a side panel on the bed just in front of the passenger rear tire. I dont know if all Camper Specials had badges but usually there would be a badge on the fender for a SCS. Also SCS's were only one ton 2wd.

CaptainTripsz Mine has the long wheel base and the spare in the right side of the bed. Also the inside of the bed is different in that it does not have a lip around the top with exposed bed pockets. Instead the inside panel goes up to the inside edge of the body making it smooth inside. My truck is also a F350 two wheel drive. My truck is a 460 automatic I wonder if all these trucks came with that engine option?

Dave McLain Im pretty sure the 78 and 79's came with the 460 and the 73 to 76's came with 390's or maybe 460's? I dont recall ever seeing an early one with a 460 so I cant say for sure. The 77's had some mid year changes so you might find some that had the 390 or the 460. The 360/390's were phased out in 77 due to emissions.
