The thing I've always liked about this game is how expressive Luigi is. He looks almost like a Nick Park creation, what with the non-existent chin and the grimace drawing his mouth over his cheeks. Very nice.

I'll never forget my first experience with the mirrors in this game. They're the perfect example in my eyes of what you're talking about in regards to the house vs Luigi and Luigi learning to one-up the house. When I learned that Luigi would make comments about his surroundings through the Gameboy Horror, I went giddy and took pictures of everything. Lamps, ghosts, pictures, beds, doors you name it. I was almost uncontrollably excited, but then I took a snapshot of a mirror, expecting Luigi to make a comment about his appearance. Instead I turned pale and sat quiet in the dark with the game paused for minutes on end wracked with fear immediately after the teleport effect had ended. It was so unexpected and the effects so alien, I was damn near convinced to not pick up my controller again. It would be a while into my playtime where I took another picture of the mirror, only this time to prove to my brother that it was real. Except this time, some stroke of genius hit me; I could use this scare to get to where I needed to be. I had a ton of Boos left to find, and I hadn't done much backtracking. I felt like a sneaky bastard that day when I nearly doubled my Boo counter. It's just a very subtle genius that you can only find through the best of Nintendo.

Games with Luigi as the main star always have incredibly satisfying endings. Because he's flawed. He's frightened. He's alone. Everything's trying to kill him at every turn. And he keeps going. Despite everything that's thrown at him, he pushes on through. Whereas Mario runs, jumps and "Yahoos!" his way through EVERYTHING, completely eliminating any chance at tension and danger.

The idea of location as character is a really powerful idea. A lot of times, we focus simply on how Luigi's expressiveness makes it feel like a genuine experience. But it takes two forces to generate a conflict. Luigi cannot reach the peaks of emotion in this game that he does without the context of the what he's doing and where he is. Since the house is also a character, it also means that Luigi can act on the house in the way Mario couldn't. Mario can defeat enemies, sure, but that's about it. I think it's why the more interesting Mario games are the ones with inhabited lands with consistent theming, where his actions feel like they have an impact outside of "I have gotten from point A to point B" I really liked your analysis that haunted houses are just houses with subtly hidden mysteries, where you are the intruder. A good one isn't a room, but a collection of rooms with unique histories that tie together. That to tackle the challenge, you can't look at incidents as isolated but as a part of a larger whole. It's always enjoyable when a small detail pops up you think is just for show but it has actual ramifications for any paying close enough attention. Good job as always B.

The game’s camera itself is fixed as if looking at a stage when not in combat. It’s not overhead or goes to any insane cinematic angles save for the cutscenes. The foreground is reserved for showing where the doors are, cutting straight through the claustrophobic walls. The framing of a slightly estranged family is very fun. The more dejected family members like Clairvoya & Jarvis & even the children speak with Luigi because they likely aren’t speaking to anyone else. They’ve been isolated to their own rooms with no one to speak with. The other family members endlessly preoccupy themselves with eternal distractions while their family members suffer alone. It’s a shame they all must be slapped in paintings.

You explanation on King Boo and the way the boos treat Luigi different for Mario made me realize how clever is the way he got captured. Mario is a platform hero, as such, tends to rush and clear his foes by sheer prowess and determination. ...hence why the boos TRICK him. Throw him out of his element, unaware and unexpected. Dealt before he could even attempt to strike. It's a rather brilliant way to show King Boo as this way sneakier and craftier boss than the more blunt approaches Bowser does.

The fact that the game has kept that alure for me all these years is truly something worth celebrating.

In my opinion, what makes Luigi even better than Mario is his willingness to face his greatest fear in order to save his brother. Out of that brotherly love. And the fact that he clears the ENTIRE mansion in a SINGLE night is incredible. That’s why this is one of my favorite games of all time- Luigi, in spite of being a very timid person, is willing to put his sanity on the line out of love for his brother. That’s a true hero right there.

Just finished my first ever Hidden Mansion run on the 3DS last night. Man, what a blast. It wasn’t just a standard hard mode, the choice of ghosts that spawned in each room were mixed up as well. The extra poison mushrooms really set me on edge, to the point where I learned that sometimes it’s better to let a ghost go if you’re about to be attacked so you can “dodge”. Best part was when I learned that you’re guaranteed hearts via multi-captures. A great high-risk, high-reward system. Last thing, I did NOT expect the final boss to be more difficult than it was. Some of those bombs were going off way too soon, and I had to pay closer attention to which ones to suck up. Didn’t really help that my C-Stick stopped working, but it was still a thrilling conclusion!

For what it's worth, my headcanon is that most (not necessarily all) of the portrait ghosts did know each other in life and did live in a mansion very similar to the one Luigi is inside of. King Boo broke them out of E. Gadd's lab and recruited them, and decided the best idea for a trap would be a mansion similar to the one most of them were found in. So the fake mansion is "based" on a real one.

I really need to give this game a second chance. My only experience with this game was renting it from Blockbuster years ago... problem was that something was horribly wrong with the copy I rented. There were *_bizzare_* side effects; the room where you meet Egad? Wouldn't play the cutscene that's supposed to, would just skip straight to the paintings talking, then would leave me stranded in there until I died, since I never got the Pultergeister. I did get to explore a few rooms... though I couldn't progress, and this one yellow stainless glass window I remember would freeze the game. Sorry for the rant, it's just that this was honestly my first experience with Luigi's Mansion, and I've just had to get it off my chest. I like how this series generally highlights the one trait Luigi is commonly agreed to have over his brother; his intelligence. Mario isn't exactly dumb, but he is willing to jump in giant holes in the desert for no particular reason. Maybe he's dumb. Who am I, the IQ police? LM tend to be puzzle games, even in the boss fights! You're given an array of abilities, and you must figure out which one you use where to stop the ghosts. Yay, smart bro! Also, I would DIE if they brought Peasley back for a future LM game. Mario gets to save HIS royal crush on just about EVERY outing, sometimes multiple times, but Luigi? Not so! It's a long shot, yeah, maybe they hope we'll forget about Pea completely, but guess who! ISN'T! GONNA! FORGET!!!!

Never played this game, but washing it has always been a fun experience. They really got the most of the Luigi and the boos, which in the games are invincible. It gives context to why luigi can't just go head first into platforming like Mario. Also, never thought of them park angle. Could one day all video games are like theme park rides? I dunno, but it's a neat thought and thinking about games in this way could lead to interesting design.

I was thinking about what kind of setting could work for a sequel to Luigi’s mansion that would still leave room for a variety of portrait ghosts to capture without being a repeat of the first game’s mansion. I then realized that Luigi’s mansion 3 already takes place in that perfect setting, a haunted hotel tower. Makes sense to go to Disney’s other spooky ride this time.
@MatthewCampbell7654 жыл бұрын
I will say that, with a haunted mansion, you actually probably should try and make every room theoretically accessible. The reason for this is that, quite simply, even the largest houses are realistically pretty small locations by video game standards. There won't likely be a problem of having to put in filler content, for example (in fact, you're more likely to run into the opposite problem, which I'll get to later). This means you can get a very content-dense and cohesive location that innately has a unified story-arc to it. For example, the mansion in LM1 feels like a very plausible location. The Mansion feels like a place people would actually live in. In fact, while the game semi-denies this to a degree, there's a strong impression that the portrait ghosts were all people who lived in this giant mansion together at some point, their ghosts still lingering on. The big downside is that aforementioned opposite problem: A mansion is so small that it might be hard to fit all the content you actually want. Plus, that very same cohesion can potentially be limiting (since it comes with the downside that any given room "has" to fit in). You're basically stuck with a single mega-dungeon crawl. This is actually a problem the Luigi's Mansion series has always struggled with. LM1 was a bit too short, and that was even stretching the sorts of rooms that place would plausibly have. There's a telephone room, a clock room, an observatory, a fortune teller's room, an armory, a taxidermy-themed room...whoever lived here had an awful lot of hobbies, even in context of a rich extended family. LM2 tries to fix this by making there be different mansions, but that results in the problem of kind of defeating the point by segmenting off different sections, creating less cohesion. Plus, you actually would run into redundancy with that approach (realistically, every house would have at least one bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom, but there isn't necessarily a lot of variation in these concepts. A single house, twice as big, doesn't necessarily need twice as many kitchens or bathrooms). LM3 then makes a super-building, which is a fairly good balance.

Three is looking more and more like there's going to be a lack of portrait ghosts and clever, charismatic mook ghost designs. I find the that differences between the original Luigi's Mansion and the sequels is similar to the difference between Super Mario RPG and the subsequent games in the classic RPG style. That said, I do think a lot of the issue with LM3 is the lighting and atmosphere--the gameplay itself can still work. Add in some music and maybe use color grading to alter it, and I think you can get something that feels more like the original. I mean, it does have the equivalent of portrait ghosts, and the feeling that you are looking at the story of this hotel. It's not as claustrophobic, but it still encourages you to look everywhere. It has the new mechanics, but you're still Luigi setting out to free Mario in ways only he can. It's like a merger between the two previous games, and just needs a little more of the original mixed in. At least, that's my impression so far.

I never liked Horror games. But despite that I've always had a good time with Luigi's mansion. The most fun I have with the game is usually treasure hunting. I just love getting into the secret treasure room. I'm very good at games, to such an extent that horror games tend to frustrate me. I have played many games where if I could kill it, I'd kill it if it looked at me funny. Even if it wasn't worth any experience. So when a horror game tries to induce fear, I just end up getting angry instead. Since enemies aren't meant to be annihilated in horror games this tends to lead to frustrating game experiences where I just kill them all anyway despite there being faster and easier options. Many horror games are built specifically to where you're REALLY not supposed to kill all the monsters. But they stat them, so I'll kill them. That's the RPG players way. But it's not fun for horror games.

now I REALLY want to hear if you think Luigi's Mansion 3 recaptured this spirit of the first game for you.

It won't be too soon, but I'm already working on a video for it in the future. Lots of thoughts.

I found the second game to be pretty disappointing, mostly because it just didn't live up to the first game. The sequel wasn't bad by any means, but it had none of the atmosphere and character of the original Luigi's Mansion. And based on what we've seen so far, the third one looks pretty similar to the second.
