Ya built yourself a frickin Billy goat. It's just so planted. Just like those goats that climb on dams to lick the salt on the sides. That's what that truck reminds me of. I wouldn't cover up the cantilevers. They look awesome!! Great video, great build!! Bucket chair with foot pegs...too funny

It turned out so great with so little extra put into it. I'm impressed! I have a 10.2 Raw builders I have built up with a similar cantilever kit (probably identical) and a hardbody. I got the cantilever setup solely because I didn't want to cut holes in the body. Seeing how well this build turned out, I'm thinking I have to try and steal some of your ideas, and turn it from a decent trail truck, to a functioning crawler. The cantilever suspension defintely needs some stiffer springs and heavier oil, cause that thing is pretty much just flopping around right now. And I need to do some sort of machining similar to what you have done. I also need to put that heavy hardbody Jeep on my RGT. and get me a much more light weight body for it. I have a cliffhanger body on the way. That might work. I think figuring this thing out, and build it to be a nice crawler, will be a project for this summer. Especially since you have already done most of the thinking for me. 😉

Be cool if you could tig weld a nut onto the end of a dog bone cup and see your spare rim spinning in operation and from the sour cover knob of the body hole cut out a 2-3mm center line down so the body splits around the dog bone cup removing the body etc. Also you’ll be able to adjust the slipper clutch. I personally like a working slipper I find that it prevents too much wheeling back on super vert angles dissipating some of the transmitted torque from the rear tires. When you slip the pads a little and let off they tend to warm up expanding the slipper disc and creating traction.

That is a good looking Rig. I think it would look badass with just a Fuel Cell and no bed, I don't know if I could cover that rear suspension. Awesome video as usual! 🤙🏼

SO now you have it climbing like a spider i think its time to do the "which tyre is best" test for this rig, im sure the fake ruptures or approach tyres would perform on this truck id be testing them anyway. I did originally think of the name copperhead as you were painting it copper inside but now thats gone out the window. Definitely black widow or darth climber, something along those lines. Another great rig and another great video, I cant keep up the with builds. I havent even started cutting my new frame yet and you have 2 whole rigs built lol. Kudos!

Tarnation, I shoulda just painted it copper and been done. I have a stack of Copperhead stickers. Yep, tire testing to begin shortly-- not that I'm mad at all at how well a set of basic Canyon Trails are doing.

The reason the rear is so soft feeling is due to the angle of the pushrod relative to the shock. If the pushrod was 90deg to the shock, you’d have a much more consistent and normal feeling shock. The fact that the pushrod gets closer and closer to parallel, to the shock, you’re losing effective spring and damping rate. Also the ratio of the bellcrank lends itself to creating a softer/less damped shock. If you flipped it, you would probably see an increase in effective spring rate and damping. Still not as much as could be had if the pushrod was vertical.
@CrawlerCanyon
@CrawlerCanyon Жыл бұрын
Gonna have to go with the compromise on this one. The shocks don't work with the bellcrank flipped, the pushrods go from having too much mechanical advantage to having none. This would also put almost the entire shock body above the rails, which defeats the whole point of it. I'd either have to take a good inch off of the wheelbase, or extend the chassis an equal amount to get the axle to a spot where the pushrod would be more vertical. I think there will quite likely be an LCG build in the future where I build cantilever-specific rails, so I can get the exact shock placement I want. I can live with having to power down descents with this guy, because the performance everywhere else is fantastic.

@@CrawlerCanyon Also, the main point of cantilever suspension in off road application is "travel" gains... i.e.-more overall suspension travel with the same shock (usable travel) the "bellcrank"s pivot and mounting positions should give more travel with the same shock or even shorter. Those pushrod positions are jacked. This set-up is incorrect. No hate , long time viewer (remember the race track) love ya man, I stayed BECAUSE you changed to the "canyon" format.... but you should check out some more info on suspension designs. There is a lot of good books and articles out there on cantilever suspensions. Keep being you man, have fun!

@@CrawlerCanyoni didn’t think they would work flipped, just an example. Not hating on the setup, I think it could work even better with some tweaking. It definitely looks cool and allows you the room for more activities lol. My dad and I watch your videos often. He’s scratch building some crawlers of his own now.

Flipping the bell crank isn't the fix, the fix is moving the bell crank rearward. Get the pushrod geometry right and the rest will sort itself out.

Do u think it may have been the mesh that was making the cherpping noise because the black dust had to have came from the spur. Maybe the screws on the motor mount may be lose and making the motor rock back and forth

I can see its been aaid a couple times already but i have a slightly different point to push In regards to the angle of the rear pushrod relative to the rocker, can you flip the whole assembly so the shocks are forward of the rear axle ? I feel like reversing thw direction of the rocker would put it more inline with the suspension travel. Secondary benefit is bringing the weight , although minimal, of the shocks forward and more central . Curious to hear your thoughts on that.

What if you reversed the center cantilever bracket to be closer to above the axle so the push rods are more vertical, and flip the shocks to face forward on the chassis instead of out the rear?
@CrawlerCanyon

There's not enough room on these rails. Maybe with a 60mm or 70mm shock. I' now thinking about a future LCG with rails that are cantilever specific, so I can tune to my liking. For a bolt-on Amazon kit on stock 10.2 rails, I think these are doing well enough that I don't wanna redo the whole thing just to improve the bench feel. I can't see the on-rocks performance getting much better as is. I'll likely try some different tires, but this guy is pretty well set... for now.

I took a servo mount (I think from a Redcat) cut it in half, and used half on each side. Cut down two of the bodymount posts from the kit and screwed them into the servo holes. I think I covered it in Episode 2? I think?

I think what we get from an Amazon kit is what we should expect-- I now have at least the mental plan for LCG rails specifically set up for cantilever. I've got some super-skinny MST shocks that have never found a home on anything else, and I think would be perfect for it. When it will happen, who knows.

I do like the tire on the rear, but i feel it may ruin the balance you have now. As for names, cunudrum or black magic came to mind. The cantilever suspension is awesome, i have a set on my hardbody TRX4 and it pulls lines that others cant. I also wish i knew exactly why. Im in the same mindset as you. Somehow it transfers weight different than conventional shocks, especially when the vehicle is vertical.
