My definition of "quick" might not fall in line with others. But I've got you know, things to say. I call these a "quickview" because it covers unboxing and initial testing. It does not speak to durability, longevity, etc.
This is the "quick" review of the Rhino V80A ESC for outrunner.

Thanks for the overview, I flew drones in the past and programmed these little ESC's - we're just scratching the surface with what flight ESC units can do, they are incredibly powerful and can handle a LOT of power due to the demands of flight. The drone community has put out custom firmware that controls a myriad of settings and is VERY granular (with a poper GUI), I hope someone in our community has the ability to do the same (there is a firmware out there, but it takes some tech knowlege and soldering skills to get this going) these little units are incredible. Don't get me started on those motors!

You need to get an outrunner immediately. If you don't have a rig for one, build it. I'm running a tiny little 3530 in Yella, and the throttle response is unreal. I might have more outrunners than brushed now. I think. Maybe.

So thanks again for a great review. I like the product / bench time and the performance time on the rocks. I’m stilling learning about this type of setup but starting to really like it. I love that rig. He's so good, and now it's beyond reason how good your class 1 is. I'm about to press buy on that ESC now. I have a HH setup with their Crawlmaster mini and the 2250 micro outrunner and it's great. I see that 3BRC are listing a "trail proof" black jacket outrunner. Water, rocks, and mud resistant with a 1 year warranty "no matter what you do to it". But it's sensored and wants a Castle ESC in sensored mode to run. OR you can get the YellowJacket outrunner that is more comp spec and sensor-less, but says good enough for the trails and 2 speed rigs...AND " Lifetime warranty: We warranty our Yellowjackets for life with the orignial purchaser. This includes bearings, repair, water damage, or replacement regardless of how it happened. The motor must be non-functioning." Very intrigued.

I've tended to opt for the $20-30 drone motors, grind a flat for the pinion, and just hammer it. But the lifetime replacement from 3BRC is certainly intriguing. I haven't killed an outrunner yet, but you can be all but sure that I will at some point.

So I tried the FLYSKY FS-G7P transmitter and it worked on the first try. Just thought I would throw it out there. But works great once you get it work. I purchased 2 more. Now its a waiting game. Thanks for the video.
@CrawlerCanyon
@CrawlerCanyon Жыл бұрын
On your Sanwa, dial the throttle trim up to like +90 before you calibrate. Daphne the Sport runs on an even older Airtronics MX-3X, and it was the same story. Something to do with the older radios having too big of a deadband or something weird related to the throttle. So it's not unique to the Rhino (she runs an AGI Ninja) but something about old radios and AM32s.

I have a couple of outrunner rigs where the motor is within an inch of the ESC and never had any issues. I have one where the ESC and the receiver are in the same box together, and again, no issue. You can cut the wires if they seem way too long-- but as the wires on the outrunners themselves tend to be about 2-3" long, the longer wires on the ESC usually help. At least for me.

Hello sir. I just installed the 80 amp and 1800 kv outrunner. It’s smooth but the esc. Motor wires and motor get pretty hot. You can touch but can’t hold motor more the 3 sec. I have the latest firmware and have stuck and stall unchecked. The motor kv is set to 1880 which is the closest I could get it. I Bench tested it not even having it installed in my vrd and it gets hot. It’s in 4s
@CrawlerCanyon

Are you using plugs, or is the motor hardwired to the ESC? That amount of heat is never right, so I would trend toward thinking some connection point is bad. Like, if there's a cold joint in one of the bullets, the thing will still work, but it won't be happy about it. Same for the battery plug.

@CrawlerCanyon

Pretty much, yeah. Gear reduction is simple mechanical advantage-- so getting solid drag brake out of a 30:1 FDR takes a lot more oomph than getting it out of a 60:1 FDR. Other than as a cost saving measure, I have no idea why most every gearbox out there has so little gear reduction.

I think you should unbox the “stuck rotor protection” because it’s for drones if the propeller get stuck it cuts the power. And box the “stall protection” because it’s the opposite. So it won’t stall when the load is high. Because that’s what we want in a crawler 😊 I’m thinking wrong?
@CrawlerCanyon
@CrawlerCanyon 7 ай бұрын
Some ESCs don’t seem to care if stuck rotor protection is on, while others are barely functional if it’s on. I turn it off on every outrunner controller now- but still have several where it’s still checked and they work fine. So I dunno.

I might have to order one of these. I'm curious, do you have enough wheel time with this to compare to the 10BL120 for an outrunner? @CrawlerCanyon

It's a whole different level compared to the 10BL120. The low speed on the Rhino is pretty phenomenal, and there's no PWM noise, at least as far as I can tell. Doesn't hurt to have a 10A BEC, either.

@@CrawlerCanyon yeah I'm on the fence about it. I think my biggest concern is longevity, but I have a budget rig currently running a BL120 with a 9imod outrunner and my only complaint is the extreme low speed control that I'm used to with the CrawlMaster v2 and Silent Assassin.

Also, if you're using a VPN you (probably) won't be able to access the Rhino site at all.

also, reversing an outrunner is the same as reversing an inrunner, as long as they are sensorless brushless motors. Sensored is different, and i auppose i don't know of any sensored outrunner, but still some inrunners are sensorless and can reverse wires to reverse direction. :)

And what if i were to have a 2Low or prefixal gearbox with a 9t pinion and portals, too slow? What size kv should I run to make it optimal. How would you set it up in this situation. Was that on a 45t spur
@CrawlerCanyon

I have a build using the 2Low and MEUS portals (same ratio as Vanquish) and it's great. I'm using an 1800kv on there, which is what I'd recommend (or thereabouts) for portals. If using straights, 1400kv or lower. The test subject for this video is something of an oddity, a TRX-4 gearbox but paired to straight axles (AR45s) so there's little gear reduction. An AR45 is usually 3.75:1 for the axle, while a TRX-4 axle is 9.7:1.

The Furitek costs considerably more, only goes to 4S, and has half the BEC voltage options (6v and 8v for the Lizard, and 5.2, 6.0, 7.4, and 8.2 for the Rhino) and half the amp rating (5A vs. the Rhino's 10A) AliExpress has Rhino combos with motor and ESC for around $90. The Rhino S20s are my absolute favorite outrunners, around $50USD on AE and $65 USD on Amazon. I have more than enough converted/modified drone motors to use for testing/development on new builds, and tend to stick to the Rhinos for the final product. It's one of those instances where there really is a worthwhile difference between the cheaper one and the more expensive one.

I'm curious why you'd get this over a hobbywing fusion pro. Genuine question, does this outrunner set up have any advantages? Seems to me that it's equal in torque and low speed control, but you lose top end wheel speed, you lose FOC control, and you lose both the plug and play ability and the ability to drive safely in muddy conditions. Seems to me that an outrunner is simply like a hobbywing fusion with less features. So what's the appeal?
@CrawlerCanyon
@CrawlerCanyon Жыл бұрын
If the camera doesn't show it, the torque in the outrunner is way, WAY beyond what the Fusion can produce. Also, the Fusion Pro's greatest strength is it's greatest weakness-- it's a Hobbywing: so 2-3S only, and we get two choices of kV. With an outrunner ESC like this, I can pair it with whatever motor I want-- some tiny, high-kV 3520 on 3S, or a chunky, low-kV 3548 on big volts, like 6S. So there isn't a loss in wheelspeed, because it's more selectable. Higher voltages bring distinct advantages-- for example, all other factors being equal, an 850mah 6S pack will have about 10% more run time than a 1500mah 3S pack. So sure, the Fusion Pro is still my favorite "combo" in terms of performance, convenience, and cleanliness of install. But a Rhino + Flash Hobby 3548 combo is about 90 bucks, compared to 150 for a Pro. And I mean... outrunners sound cool.

I think the ESC would be amazing, you'd just have to really shop around to see what outrunner to go with. I'd want something a little bigger (because of the Phoenix weight) and then either a bit higher in the Kv due to the gear reduction from the portals, or alternately, more voltage. 9imod has a 3542 in 1400kv that will take 4S (amzn.to/3I0g0wQ), and that would be AMAZING in a Phoenix.
