Not the best conditions on the Kaikoura coast but still plenty of crays and paua to annoy. Go to 8:46.33 for some fun with an Octopus.

One thing I was taught when I was younger...Never go diving by yourself!

Always preferred of course, but sometimes nobody wants to come out and play. Been doing this since childhood so learnt a few lessons. If I'm in the water by myself I take things a lot slower and more cautious. Longer surface intervals between dives etc, fresh water bottle for hydration and cramp prevention. I wont let myself get tired, I often just sit on a rock and rest. I'll dive spots I know well. I often have someone on beach or I'll let someone know of my destination (even down to specific rocks or reefs) and time. And I don't dive in poor conditions. Please don't think me complacent, I have so much love and respect for the sea. Have lost a family member to the sea while diving so staying as safe as possible is #1

I kept wondering how many tasty crays that octopus takes from all the rocks!

A dive buddy and myself rounded an octopus into a cray hole during a dive. Crays were too far back to reach but once the octopus entered the hole we needed a catchers mitt! The crays were flying in every direction. Mortal enemies! Was so funny.

Great video I tried my hand at cray fishing yesterday for the first time while on scuba in Akaroha. Unfortunately I came away with nothing, cant wait to try again tho its good sport.

Hi Richard, after watching your video I am getting so exciting. I have been to Kaikoura twice the water is always rough.Never see crayfish at all. However the water in your video is so flat.Do mind share where abouts is your spot? Many thanks.

Sweet playing around with the octopus. What's your head cam setup?
@rhorwell10 жыл бұрын
Just the standard GoPro head strap. I find it quite good as you can wear it under your hood so that it can't fall off.

What is your float setup and how deep is this?
@rhorwell10 жыл бұрын
Nothing special. Car inner tube with a 'Pozi Catch' catch bag. Lots of buoyancy for a couple of bags to keep the crays separate from fish/paua etc. Also have a couple of clips to hang spear gun from. Can get hard to drag back to the beach when full though. This was all pretty shallow diving. No more than 5m.

Leave your tube behind take your catch bag...its easier.
@rhorwell3 жыл бұрын
Not if you have a bag full of Paua, gets a bit heavy. Traded the tube in for a sausage with flag. Little bit easier to tow and more visible. I did try empty plastic coke bottles in the bag to keep it buoyant and just leave on surface when diving down but I spent too much time worried about bag drifting away. Think I'll stick to an anchored bag. What do you do Taniora?
@tanioraaura12743 жыл бұрын
10 paua 50 kina a couple of crays. Then its getting to be a challenge. I do it all the time. Don't need flotation devices. Few beers the night before dive. Sweet az

Richard i have a 3 metre safety line with small float attached to a quick release wristband. I find crays i can drop catch bag close by catch a breath and go gown to the marked spot.👋

Octopii are cool until they grab you with two arms and anchor to the reef with their other arms. Oh, you want back to the surface now Hooman? Still think it's funny to rouse me from my slumber now, Hooman?

Strong when they want to be. Amazing creatures. I'm always fascinated by them. Never been held under by one (yet) but have had one cling to me for 15min plus just happy to swim around. An amazing experience.
