I love how you have your little furbaby there with you! When I had a puppy, she always sat in my lap or under my desk while I worked. I hope to have a little canine coloring companion once again someday.

To help prevent streaking on mixed media paper or coloring book paper, you color off onto a piece of plastic or a ceramic dish. Then pick up with a slightly damp brush or water brush and color gently with it instead of directly with the markers to your image. Being very careful not to overwet the paper. Go over paper once with color with brush Do not. Go back and forth or paper may pill. Be sure to dry marker color with a dryer or heat gun thoroughly between layers. Hope this technique helps someone. Although water based markers work best on water color paper.

To be honest, the set says it’s for skin tones. It does not say it’s for hair or eyes or any part of the rest of the face. It would be nice if Crayola came out with pencils and markers that were for make up. I think that would be fun!

I’ve gotten amazing results with Crayola colored pencils on Canson XL Drawing (the green book). I got many layers to lay down with no problem. It was a portrait and I had many people offer to buy it- but you know- not professional quality. I do love my Crayola pencils for nostalgia and I like to support them in their work as we really need good quality beginner art supplies. And honestly, as far as wax crayons go- I wouldn’t waste my money on any other brand- Crayola is the only ones I’ll use or buy for my kids.

Hmm... I wonder, would the darker base layer look better if you used the marker as a watercolor paint (IE the old scribble it on a piece of plastic and pick up the color with a wet brush trick)?

I would love to see your girls finished with other colors on the rest of the page. Also, I’m curious as to how the crayons would do if you used them with gamsol and or the heat gun technique? Just a thought. Thanks for bringing these products to our attention. I have the crayons, but will not be looking for the pencils and markers.

Thank you for this video. I was looking forward to getting this set since I read about it coming out.. I have just been waiting for the prices to drop down, and they did for the markers! I have. a hard time doing skin tones ( I really want to learn how to use all the colors of the rainbow, like professional artists use) but for now I just want to start with lighter and darker shades. So I am going to fix my membership and take advantage of the “Skin & Hair Fast Track” classes! I thought Steve might want to know, there is a formatting issue on the website (when signing up to pay when you are already a member). It says pay by card just fine but the pay by PayPal option is pushed over so that the word paypal is directly under the word credit card. I have a mac and run chrome, if that makes a difference.

If these are skin tones, it’s a bit odd that you wanted to color the other elements of the face with the same colors. It’s quite cool that they matched the colors between the different mediums. Nice video, very detailed. Maybe with the dark skin tone you went way too dark with the base layer?

Jennifer, this was an awesome video, as usual. I purchased the markers and the pencils and you're right, the type of paper you use will depend greatly on the result you get. I did a really nice coloring page using Crayola Markers/Pencils and what I did to help my character look more real, I threw in my Black Widow dark tones and boy did my pic turn out nice. I have to say, I'm very impressed with these Crayola sets. Not too bad. You just have to pick the right paper and use the tools you got and make it work, just as you demonstrated. I highly recommend them for any colorist.

I'm an advanced Artist but I want to expand my skills in coloring people. Would you recommend using the crayola skin toned colors or the Prisma skin toned colors for best results?
@76elyard2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, I really enjoy your work and value your insights. I'm also happy with the Crayola Colors of the World pencils and crayons. I was excited to see you review this system though I would have liked to have seen you use the products separately rather than as mixed media. I have the Black Widow light and dark skin tones and they are a quite different color selection which I attribute to it being for more advanced users. That said, skin tone sets are quite different from each other and skin tone sets are quite different from choosing colors (brown, tan, beige, etc) from one's regular set. Using Colors of the World I'm having to work with balancing the three base tones to build up a natural looking color. I have had some success but I haven't had success with ending with the tone I envisioned partly due to skill level but also because of balancing color. Perhaps if you would, could you do a video on creating skin using a skin tone set alone (particularly with pencils) and discussing some of the theory of skin tone color palettes.

Thanks for this video! After watching it, I realize I'm not missing out by buying these sets as I already have other pencil sets. I think these are great for kids, giving them lots of choices for coloring people, which, like you said, we didn't have before as children. I see if you like to blend at all, these would not work for you. Thanks! Every time you said rose, I expected Rose to lift her head!

Is the Crayola products supposed to blend? I was never able to blend with Crayola colored pencils. But I cant blend with Copics either; it won't blend well. So i could be having the same problem with Crayola as Copics. I like how you did different skin tones.
@birdgirl26233 жыл бұрын
Depends on the kind of paper you are coloring on, but yes, Crayola colored pencils do blend and layer--just not like something fancier like Prismacolor, or even mid-priced pencils created with colorists in mind. Jennifer has a video on KZbin discussing what types of paper works best for different media. If you are coloring with coloring books, paper type and quality also makes a big difference in how your coloring tools behave--whether it's a cheap kids' brand like Crayola, or fancier brands like Prismacolor. I don't have Copics yet because they are very expensive, and the FSS in Strong in This One. :) There are probably tutorials online about how to blend with Copics. But Crayolas are basic water-based markers for children, and Copics are alcohol-based markers aimed at more serious artists. They don't work the same way at all.

It would be amazing that a high end brand come up with these exact colors, adding split primaries, and at least mid-range secondary colors, an indigo, and a grayscale, and call it a Portrait Set. Ohhh if I had the money to create that!

Those sets of colors of the world aren't meant to color a whole coloring page!; Duh, your buying these sets for skin tones only, SMH O, that make marker paper, and the pencils and crayons will work on it also. And that dark toned girl, her nose looks totally broken, her whole face looks broken. And I know intermediate and advanced colorists who are using these same products, and the makers of these products never intended for you to just use those colors only, they assume you already have the classic colors.
