Good to know I can read the crows story as standalone 😍 I didn’t want to have to go through the whole grisha trilogy to start reading haha. I’m sorry to say, but I hold the opinion that they made the show entirely unique. Had they just gone with the shadow and bone grisha trilogy-the show probably would have looked so different (I feel they sold themselves too short on being able to do the story by itself). Still. Loved the whole series to pieces.

Honestly, I would still recommend reading the S&B trilogy first. Yes you can read the crow books as standalones but you honestly miss out on a lot of the references to the trilogy plus the excitement you get when characters from the first books make an appearance. Not only that but you're also missing out on a lot of the world building done in the first 3 books that help set up an understanding of the universe and the different nations of people (plus all the terminology). I wouldn't say the show and the book are unique of each other, they still have a lot of similarities and the progression is pretty much the same (granted ive only watched the first season). Obviously they have changed a lot of the in between plots in order to fit the crows into the same timeline and progress their own story on the side but honestly it's been handled quite well. I agree if they had originally stuck to the books religiously then the show would look rather different but there were many things the Author had regretted not doing in the books so I'm assuming the show gave her an outlet to explore those things (one being the lack of representation of poc in the S&B trilogy). All in all I would 100% recommend reading the books in order. If it helps, even though the six of crows have only 2 books, i found that it took me longer to read them than the 3 books in the s&b trilogy. Entirely up to you though! but it is definitely worth the joy of knowing what the characters are referring to from the trilogy when reading the six of crows books. Happy reading!

Add culture? Do these people not realise Europeans have culture? Clearly not

People who say something needs 'more diversity' usually just mean 'less white people'.

Well the ones that produce movies and shows hate Europeans so........ They will make them look clueless wimpy gay, alone, evil, or insignificant... and the darker races will be lifted up. And it's preached all day everyday they are God's chosen ones.... 👌

Team Darklina cause I'm a simple Simp for Ben Barnes xD I still have to read the books but to me Mal seems like the typical best friend that we can find in any fantasy novel and or movie/show since the 2000s. I guess I'm simply sick of generic characters that don't really add something new or special to a storyline - which makes the Crow's impact in the series even more important! This trio is in my opinion so unique and special to any book or movie I know of that you enjoy every single scene they are in. That's good character writing. In this case the Darkling is so much more interesting to me than Mal (in the series). I also liked that he got a backstory and that he was shown as a caring person before turning into the evil we all later learn how to love to hate :D

I'll reply to the darkline ship. Not many scenes of them exist in the book as far as i read and I'm in the part where baghra takes alina and tells her to leave so it's a little disappointing. Also in the books, as far as I've read again, alina is in love with mal

They humanized the darkling a lot in the show, his past wasn’t addressed much at all and his motives were far more “rule the world” than “protect all grisha.” Also he’s hundreds of years old and keeps banging teenage girls, which is gross.

@@marinaplakida If you're referring to romantic scenes between the darkling and Alina in both the first book and the show then imo its pretty much the same; a little kiss and then a big makeout after the ball (plus their tension in the book and the show is DELICIOUS). Ive read the books too and i hate to disagree but Alina and the darkling actually have a lot of scenes together, especially at the little palace. It might not feel like a lot to you maybe because the books are more drawn out (and the books explore more of the other relationships in the little palace as well). Their relationship is a quick but also a slow burn because of their ties to one another. Mal's journey is also a long one and to some degree i think he's supposed to be overshadowed in order to build up the Darkling's presence. But Mal really does grow into his own especially in the last book of the trilogy.

I never liked Mae Li in the role, sorry a better actress should have been chosen. Alexander made the series worth watching, sorry I have a soft spot for complex villains when the good guys are well so generic generally.
