Awesome #gliderflight from Worcester, South Africa to the False Bay. The wind was blowing with more than 60 km/h and we could find great wave and ridge lifts. It was a nice example of how to use the #PowerOfNature with a glider to experience the most stunning scenery from the birds´perspective, without burning fuel (only 3 liters for the aerotow). In the background you can see the #CapeOfGoodHope
This video is a behind the scenes of "The craziest flight of my life". Many of you asked for longer videos and videos with the raw sound of the glider without music. Hope you enjoy it as much as I am ;-)

Sory For I do have sometimes dark humour but I still have faith when I Saw your Videos, WE still Can preserve our small planet. Hope to see your next flights with a 280km/h finish!!!!! For info how much was the vne on your last beautiful glider ?
@SteFly

@@gilbertlandemaine3890 The vne is 280 km/h, so we exactly flew that fast. The turbulences were extremly low for that much wind, because it is blowing directly from the ocean more or less laminar.

You guys are crazy man - that’s completely insane flying from Worcester to Rooiels and then going down to road level above the ocean. A lot of faith in that North Westerly. Couldn’t see an engine hidden anywhere either. Awesome.... I guess you can always land on the beach at the Strand....

This is the buzzards' time to make their fall migration here in SW Oregon where they use thermals to carry themselves up thousands of feet and then kick out at the top to make as much mileage south as they can before they find the next thermal. I counted 83 birds in a long column two days ago. First bird into the thermal kicks out first and leads the column, last bird in is tail-end Charlie. Glider pilots are good at this, but can only dream of the buzzard's skills.

I do not know soaring, but how can you fly so low near that beach and not crash?? You do not have any lift there... so how do you get back. I did see you guys accelerating and then going up near the mountain, then I heard the beeping of the variometer. Maybe there is strong winds around that mountain which you use to climb?? I still do not get it though, because after you go into the wind and rise, your speed will be lower, how can you effectively gain altitude like this?? You seemed so low, but later I saw that same spot from high above.. how on earth did you get up so high again?

Yesss!! The Arcus had 800 kilograms of takeoff weight and with 250 km/h plus speed, you get about 200 m of height at 120 km/h. And the ridge helped with some additional lift ;)

Thank you!! No, we only used the ridge to fly back. With 60 km/h wind speed we got a lot higher than the ridges and then continued to the next ridges. The way back was nearly the same, as I flew here with the Discus 2cT: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYvMkqSgf7Vob7s

At 18.38 I see (and hear) you have a very high indicated airspeed, as one would expect for such a low pass. So you can trade that speed for height, and then continue the flight back into ridge lift coming of the ridge to your left. So the theorie checks out at least. My question would be how dangerous is this really? I don't see an escape (no suitable beach of any kind and the road would not be an option I guess), so is the wind then enough of a lift source at these altitudes? Asking as I want to learn about gliding, not trying to tell you what you should or shouldn't do.
@flt31
@flt31 5 жыл бұрын
Obviously I don't know the nuances of the working lift at that site, nonetheless, nerves of steel!! I'd like to know how they got back to 'safe' height?
@SteFly
@SteFly 5 жыл бұрын
As you can see in this video, we tried the ridge many times in higher altitudes and slowly went lower. At windspeeds of 60 km/h in average, we quickly climbed in the ridge lift and then glide back to the next ridges. That was very easy and not so spectacular.

@RobertAlexanderRM
@RobertAlexanderRM 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, that is the sound of the variometer, probably the most important instrument in a sailplane and the audio is needed so you never have to look into the cockpit to know if you're rising or sinking. When you're a sailplane pilot that becomes really a second nature. I can understand it's annoying to you if you didn't know what it was for. Hight pitched means climbing, low pitched means sinking.

In case you never got a real answer, it is an audio output of a variometer. It tells you if you are in rising or sinking air. Low droning sound means you are in sinking air, and fast high pitch noise means rising air. The idea is that you don't have to stare at the instrument and can keep eyes out.
