In this episode, we will be showing you some of the BEST and CHEAPEST traditional Taiwanese street food in the ancient neighborhood of Datong and the famous old street - Dihua St in Taipei, TAIWAN. Let’s go!
We are starting the day outside of Dadaocheng Temple, where there are tons of street food stalls and a food court. We visited our favorite shop that sells meat porridge and red yeast pork. Sitting under the banyan tree with a view of the temple is the best way to start the day. The cost of the porridge and pork is 85 NTD (USD $2.84).
Next, we visit a nearby local restaurant that serves a giant pork rib soup with vegetable rice. The ribs were massive! The vegetable rice complimented the soup very nicely. The restaurant had a street food vibe and the food was priced together at 90 NTD (USD $3.01).
Next we head into the heart of the old district to Dihua Street, one of Taipei’s most historical areas. Dihua St. is an important street for locals, especially during the Lunar New Year, as there is lots of specialty Chinese/medicinal ingredients. We visit a stall that serves Taiwanese Bitter tea, which is known to have detoxifying abilities (30 NTD / USD $1.00). It was too bitter for our liking and very difficult to drink. We washed it down with Aloe tea which was much more tasty and refreshing (30 NTD / USD $1.00).
On the corner of Dihua St., we knew of a street food stall that served 4 Spirits Soup, which is packed with tons of unique ingredients, but since it’s only available in the summer season, we tried their HUGE meat buns instead. PACKED with pork, green onions and black pepper, it tasted similar to the black pepper buns from Taiwanese night markets (30 NTD / USD $1.00).
Since the soup wasn’t available, we wanted to try something similar. We tried another well known soup that is said to have medicinal properties - Ginseng Chicken soup, from another restaurant on Dihua St. The light broth had a rich flavor, and it contained a lot of chicken, with ingredients sold outside like goji berries. It was more expensive than the other street foods we’ve tried (220 NTD / USD $7.35).
There was one final traditional snack we wanted to try and that was almond tea with you tiao (油條). It is thick and looks like milk, but has a fruity and sweet taste. It is more difficult to find authentic almond tea, but this place is definitely one of them! (30 NTD for tea + 15 NTD for you tiao / USD $1.00 + USD $0.50).

I don't hate the bitter tea, and it's definitely an acquired taste. If you guys dig the medicinal broth, gotta try out this place that sells the best medicinal pork knuckle soup and along with other delicious side dishes. Be warned, they are very popular among locals and with a limited amount every day that sells fast. 歸綏街當歸豬腳老店 - goo.gl/maps/kuYgUWUwDXiYo5iz5

Bitter tea sounds like a medicinal tea. Your facial expression is priceless and I hope you learned your lesson never to do that again. 🤣😂 Chinese medicine trumps any nasty medicine you'll ever encounter. You would have never survived the nasty things my mother made me drink as a kid. 🤢🤮 The ginseng just sent shivers down my spine! But my mom never made it this way..... wish she did! She tortured me with ginseng. To this day my siblings and I won't even think of it.

I remember drinking bitter tea when I was little and it was served hot in a bowl. Also, my mom used to give us preserved plum to chase it which makes it more bearable.

The Taiwan series is brilliant, I'd say that about all of your series though. You bring a down to earth view of what's good, and you don't shy away from saying of something is bad or not as good as another place. Great video as always, cheers from Ireland

If they just had an oily greasy food, drinking those bitter tea is recommended. That Ginseng Chicken Soup is refreshing no doubt. The Fried Bread Stick is best use in porridge than dip it in an almond tea.

I love the content of your videos, great subject matter. My only issue is the inconsistent volume and the loud bass at the break points. Eh?

The bitter tea can purge your illness and inflammation. As I remember one small cup will cost $2.00usd/100ml. And there is something unique called bitter tea oil. Its nutritional value is somehow equal or better than olive oil. Sure it's not bitter and has the good special scent. Maybe you should get one back to the states as souvenir.

The name "almond tea" (杏仁茶) has been used incorrectly for decades. In fact, almond tea does not contain almonds at all, the more specific name should be "apricot kernel drink".
