I ran a group for kids at a library; one bulk purchase of cheap fidget gadgets with silent parts was worth FAR more than I realized at the time.

@@insert_bad_handle_here As a teacher I find "loop fidgets" to be the best sturdy, noiseless and least toylike fidgets. They are like two keyrings attached to each other so they can rotate in and out. Monkey noodles are another quiet one that can be wrapped around the hand for pressure but kids get tempted to swing them around.

As a teacher, I really love the fidgets that have a marble in a plastic mesh. They are quiet even when dropped on the floor, it's hard to turn them into a toy, and if they somehow get the marble out, you get to hear a kid say they lost their marble.

This is one of the reason every town should have an at cost makers space as a public service, preferrably adjacent to the library.

I think a for-profit service could even do better. Like if radio shack just got back to its roots. Actually. What if someone bought a decent midsize mall? Each store would be responsible for the makerspace next to it. So you could buy your materials and make your thing in the same building. Have a place for composites, a room of just painting booths, an RC car track in the common area. All sorts of things you could do. A giant permanent Lego pit, to get the kids early. And of course keep the food court.

I always love the idea of moving mechanics from just "My dice said I lose/win now" to something more tangible. Your stealth board feels like it could bring a longer lasting tension than multiple rolls. It would make it feel more like the players strategy would lead to success/failure instead of just RNG. I would love to find more community made things like this to engage my players more.
@eswift8318
@eswift8318 14 күн бұрын
I think you could call it a skill board or challenge board. It would be great for those situations where the whole group is supposed to diplomacize or get something done. Players could use different skills but moves get made on the same board. You wouldn't need to even explain it much. Set the scene. Put the board on the table. Point to the green peg, "This is you." Point to the goal (gold peg?), "This is success." Point to the red peg, "This is failure".

Feels like it would mean you have to roll 10 skill checks, which would be... not great imo. I like the idea of it though. In practice it looks like a lot of rolling. Might be better to have movement = DC minus check result (i.e. you succeed by 5, you can move 5 squares)

@deck_of_DM_Things I quite like the ortur lm3 myself. But I know a lot of people like the xtool S1. Depends what you want to make really. A diode laser like the ones above are great for engraving and cutting thin materials like ply wood. If you want to do thicker stuff, or any serious work with acrylic, you'll want a CO2 laser. I don't have much experience with them I'm afraid

@@deck_of_DM_Things The most important criteria is to make sure you buy an enclosed laser cutter, or buy a separate enclosure rated for one. The cheapest ones that are just an open x-y motion system on aluminum extrusion rails come with to four pairs of protective glasses, even if they're properly rated, the chances of you or your family walking in and out of the room it's in at some point without donning said glasses is just a matter of time. Sorry if I sound obnoxious, they're a lot of fun, I use one at work during off hours so I haven't had to buy my own yet. The channel Maker's Muse has a good video about it called "Are cheap laser cutter's safe?", he's worth watching in general if you like 3DP and maker content which I assume you do.

That little area map is actually amazing, I could see that as being a nice memento for players to remember an event that happened in game. If you could print out critical locations like that and have them like collectables for your players, like in the same way snowglobes are kind of seen. Really, really cool.

That Cryptex is SUPER cool. If I were running a campaign, and had a rogue or someone who knew Thieves Cant, I'd use the Cipher Wheels as a "key" of sorts, for the Cryptex. Maybe they find it in some small corner of some room, and the Rogue finds the solution in Thieves Cant elsewhere in the area. If they've made friends with the local guild or what have you, maybe they find the solution for the Cipher scribbled on some small piece of paper, or some "discarded napkin" purposefully left behind for guild members. This would allow the Cryptex to be opened, with possible vital campaign info or a weakness in defenses that allows easy access to a heavily guarded area.

Something I did for a campaign that was never actually played: Piece of sheetmetal with a region map glued on top. Printed out markers for different POIs - in our case this was for a fantasy wargame, and the markers were for Camps, Fortress, Dungeons etc. Attach magnets to the bottom of the markers to track the war's progress and where battles were taking place. Much easier method: Wet eraser marker on a clear binder sheet with the printed map in the sheet.

That 3D printed map/location is a cool idea. A thought I had for that is if your dnd game is confined to a small area or something similar, you could print out the locations and put them all together, kind of like a catan game board. And when your player explore or travel you could reveal the location map pieces. It would be a lot of work creating all the pieces but as long as you only make a generalized terrain (forest, dessert and such..) and land make locations, like the wizards tower on your piece it shouldn't be that bad.

My take on the "stealth" game: Enemy pips are immobile, but if the players fail a roll while adjacent to one, they get caught. Failed rolls otherwise add one enemy pip (or maybe turn a wall into an enemy, or have specific rules where it is placed). When they move onto an enemy pip, they push it one space or swap places if there is no open space behind it.

For a Cryptex: Go ahead and let them smash it open. And then the vial of acid or ink or whatever else inside of it will shatter and destroy what is inside. That's how those worked IRL. The player characters *ought* to know that about a cryptex if they're characters that might encounter things like that as part of their missions. If it could just be smashed open, they wouldn't be used.

You should combine the spindown dice and the skill maze dice, because otherwise it becomes muscle memory. Probably easiest with the spiral one. I'm thinking something like you hit the spinner to randomize the hole values either before or after you wind the marble through. For added tension, you could make a version that spins itself again if you take too long (complex mechanism, that) or if you shake or tilt it too many times (gyroscopic auto winder, maybe?) Edit: shows how little I know the terminology. When I said spindown, I meant the watch or talisman device.

I find the sneak-grid idea intriguing, but I was wincing a little each time you moved a piece. It seems like you made them fit tightly, like Legos, where they'd stay in place even if you turned the thing upside-down, but if I were moving pieces all the time I'd want them to just sit there via gravity, with far less force required to pick them up or push them in. Enough design to keep them from falling over when you're trying to position other pieces, but not enough to mean you have to grab more than the piece itself to pull it up and into a different location. So maybe make a version with just the teeniest bit less width on the bottom of the pieces?

The stealth tracker seems like a neat idea, but it also seems like it would just make the situation a looooooot of rolls. Id rather just use a clock

Out of curiosity I wanted to see what JLC3DP priced at, I have used them for PCBs in the past but charging $500 for a FDM print that I can do myself for under $20 is insane. Not to mention the $100+ shipping price tag but thats not their fault.

Hey, big fan of yours, could you show how to use the disc map? I'm starting with my own campaign were the players travel around the world and that would help me a lot

Thank you! I do think I'll make a video on making / using those kind of area maps soon - maybe next month. So stay tuned for that!

With the skill based Dice, either they need to actually be harder to get to the higher numbers, or impose an arbitrary time limit; like if you don’t get a result in 30 seconds it’s an automatic failure. Definitely should make multiple configurations, so people can’t just get used to the same one

I'am verry interested in the buildprocess for the area maps. I would be great if you could make a how to to explain how you would make this.

7:21 im honestly most curious about the scanning of a cheap toy to reproduce as a mini. Was the dinosaur you scanned also that small or were you able to shrink the scanned model down? I can find so many amazing applications for something like that!

It was about 6-7 inches tall, but I just scaled it down to fit on a 1 inch base!

You should make the skill based dice include the Zocchi dice used in DCC. The skill based dice seem, to me, to be very fitting for DCCs level of zaniness.

Can you elaborate on the dice tower Rainbow Silk PLA? I realize there’s variations from roll to roll but the PLA I’ve bought is night and day. I really like the look.

Allot of the symbols on the "code rings" look like they are mirrored horizontally(an upside down variation), if the ring is flipped by accident you may have issues. A housing for the rings or unique symbols would fix this🙏
