EPISODE 138
In this episode we follow some really interesting and complex joinery on deck.
The hatch sills, built by Clifton, feature some mind-bending half-lap mitre joints and some very challenging coves.
The bulwark termination block is an unusual feature that Tally Ho was originally built with, and gets remade from some large purple heart blocks.
We also receive some beautiful new tanks which get installed in the bilge, and have a lot of fun playing with some knives.

I love the smell of fresh wood shavings on the shop floor, even with all my allergies. The place where you found the floundering boat is very close to where we would gather crabs. The bay near CZ mill is shallow, we would walk the bay at low water floating a bucket to gather the crabs. One of our volunteer Firefighters made a fork looking device to pickup the crabs, it was about 40 years ago, not sure there are any crabs left now.

A little background on Tally Ho. I do believe this was a yacht built for Thomas Hellyer a fishing mogul back in the late 1800's beginning of the 1900's - he started the middle water fishing fleet consisting of sailing trawlers (smacks) sailing out of the port of Hull on the east coast of the UK. The bow post you were making out of the purple heart was a feature on all fishing smacks of that period, into the 1930's, it was as you surmise, to haul in the anchor rope, however on the smacks it went outboard of the bulwarks( as yours) but carried a rollerbetween it and the bow post to assist on the inhaul of the anchor rope/chain.

You said the woodwork on the joinery looked really good. I would say absolutely gorgeous! What a great video showing the combination of art, and engineering, and I don't know what else, to produce such lovely forms from raw lumber. Roger Scruton said, “We appreciate beautiful things not for their utility only, but also for what they are in themselves-or more plausibly, for how they appear in themselves. A truly outstanding video.

Leo, as a seasoned sailor and boatbuilder, I am sure you are aware of dealing with Dieselbug, which seems to be able to cause massive damage on engines, if not the suitable filters are used. I just got a bit worried when you had been talking about not keeping the diesel tanks fully topped up, which seems to support the growth of this situation. Within everything you need to have in mind, such little detail might get lost in the planing process.

I'm more talking about the product development side. Your first stab never works, and the second one is usually in the right direction but misses the mark. The third one is usually close enough. It's amazing to me that Leo is able to just start carving into a $1000 piece of lumber and come out with the right part without screwing it up twice on the way. @@axialmount5571 I don’t know why you would say that & I don’t particularly want to know. The product (knives) looked pretty good & I will go looking for them soon. The fact that this company basically gave Leo & his team a lot of leeway to advertise their product, & paid them well with fridge/freezer donations to boot tells me they are a ‘good’ company who supports projects such as Tally Ho, not unlike the way in which a member of my family supports local kids hockey by paying for their uniforms & kit. So please, do not “knock” those that participate in whatever manner they decide is the right thing for them to do. As ‘Shamwerks’ said, Kudos to Kamikoto. Their donations/payment is certainly appreciated. I’m sure we are all aware that Leo & crew are not professional ‘marketers’ & have no experience making a commercial but, they had a lot of fun doing it & it is certainly different from what we normally see on TV. If anything, I would think it might generate sales for Kamikoto simply because many of us use the MUTE button whenever commercials appear on TV whereas, I/we watched ALL of this amateur commercial because the guys made it funny & the fact we “know” this team. I’m still wondering, did Patrick really chop that purple heart into slices with the cleaver? Lol. That was truly hilarious. Good on you guys for trying something outside of your boat building skills.

@@rctaylor5689 I'm sure the knives are fine to use for most people, but they are not professional chef knives. Google around and you will see the complaints and marketing trickery. They are a Chinese company selling "Japanese" knives for one. The steel they use is budget stainless. I mean I'm happy they sponsored the project, but eeeck, probably not the greatest sponsor for Leo's amazing reputation.

All the work you do is beautiful, I think back of those days when you were pulling roten pieces of timber off that old structure called a boat, I could never imagine how painstaking, precise and technical it would become, as a retired tradesman congratulate you all. BTW I love all the tools and machinery you have.

Waited impatiently for the video to drop but well worth it in the end. Clinton's sill's are a thing if beauty that will, as he said, be admired 100yrs from now. Absolutely stunning to look at. Looks like you guys had fun with the advert for the knives!! Great to see the ongoing progress Leo.

The number of skills that Leo has mastered to pull this off hurts my brain. Master woodworker, solo bluewater passage-maker, navigator, draftsman, CAD designer, naval architect (this is not an exaggeration; you need to understand the structure and purpose and engineering of everything on the boat), materials science expert, purchasing agent, machinist, manager, project planner, foreman, video editor, cameraman, financial manager, producer/director...and don't underestimate the talent to be a likable on-camera presenter. It's crazy.

Can't express how much I'm appreciated for sharing this amazing journey. While being in Ukraine, is such a huge relief to kick back and relax, watching this outstanding series. This is one of my brightest moments - to join the team in this amazing build. Sorry for dropping the Patreon subscription - switched it towards Ukrainian army. Will get back when we win :)

7:30 Kamikoto are garbage quality Chinese steel, stamped in Japan. They're scam levels of overpriced junk. I'm sorry to see so many of my favorite Tubers getting drawn in by their marketing budget. Please do an ounce of research before accepting sponsorships.

Might want to a bit more research into your sponsors. That knife company’s marketing is fairy misleading. They use Chinese steel and their Japanese based marketing terms are not what they seem.
