I just ordered one. I've had people pull up to me and say they couldn't even see me due to my tailight being in their blindspot or being covered by another vehicle. After hearing that I got super paranoid about being struck by cars that were looking to lane change, especially at night. And yes engine braking is a huge deal on a motorcycle. I usually tap my rear brake to give people a heads up but hey sometimes you forget. Also when I'm not riding and In a car and see other motorcyclists I usually focus on their helmet or body, which proves how well this will catch people's attention.

Totally understandable and this is something I do when riding with a group of other bikes. That technique isn't going to help you if you are coming to an emergency stop and it's also not going to solve the problem of moving your brake light into the eye line of drivers behind you. Just more situations to think about this product working for.

One thing to consider about this - most bikes have a single rear light which, in most countries, is always on. When you brake (with the brakes :) ), what you are doing is changing the brightness of a light that was already on. Depending on circumstances, this change of brightness might be missed by another driver. This is one reason why cars and other vehicles now have auxiliary brake lights, usually in the rear window etc. which ONLY illuminate when braking AND they are higher up so can be seen further back. That said, this item does seem rather pricey for what it is, and seems rather bulkier than it needs to be...? I do like the mount system. If you often carry a pillion, they could have another bracket on their helmet, and just switch the light over...

Two things I’ve learned from aviation is that you can’t put a price on safety and redundancy is key. 169.99 isn’t even that much considering how much you should spend on gear and if the strobe light is legal in your state then there’s really no reason to not get it. Honestly if you don’t have enough money for nice gear then you don’t have enough money for a bike in general.

It does seem to work very well when you are slowing down, whether engine braking or actually braking. I intend to use Sugru adhesive rather than the supplied adhesive, as I just don't trust those tape adhesives. Hope you're loving your Brake Free. To answer the question about flickering, it's just how Brake Free sometimes shows up when using an action cam to record. The LEDs are turning on and off many times per second to save power. A lot of lights do this. It's turning on and off at such a high rate that a human eye does not register it at all and it looks like the lights are constantly on. The only time you will see it is when you record on an action camera during the day at a frame rate that's lower than 60FPS. Hope that answered it. Sugru is a good option to use. All for it. Although, we do use some good quality 3M adhesive similar to what GoPro mounts use.

Chase on Two Wheels thanks for a nice KZbin video of the Brake Free product that I beta tested for the company back in December/January 2019/2020. I wrote up a review earlier on my blog, and I continue to stand by everything I said there. REVIEW: BRAKE FREE MOTORCYCLE TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHT The product has worked flawlessly for about 10,000 miles on my helmets (I have two of the products one on each of my helmets). I paid for the units through the Indegogo campaign, and I did not receive compensation as a beta tester. I did provide the company with daily ride reviews, including weather, temperature, riding conditions, length of ride, and other information. I chose to be a beta tester because I ride a lot of miles in all conditions other than subfreezing weather with snow and ice here in Portland, Oregon, the land of violent riots! Modes: 1. Stealth - the lights are minimized, but the brake light lights on deceleration or braking. 2. Flashing - the lights flash in low power mode until you brake or decelerate, then it lights in the very bright braking mode. 3. Normal - the lights are constantly on until you brake or decelerate, and then the brake lights light in very bright braking mode. Again, after about 10,000 miles, the units continue to work flawlessly. Brightness The braking mode is very bright even in daylight, but at night they are impossible to miss. Auto Drivers Responses I get comments on the unit most times I ride, and I ride daily for about 2+ hours, perhaps an hour and a half in the winter for a total of about 20,000 miles per year. I have noticed that auto drivers' behavior is different now that I use the Brake Free on every ride. Drivers stay a bit further back and tend to notice I am slowing even when I am not braking. If you've read the blog you know I've been hit by autos in the past, the last time about two months (October) before I got the Brake Free beta test unit on the freeway in Ukiah, CA. I consider the Brake Free the best single free-standing safety mod available since it is completely portable and can be shifted from helmet to helmet, and it can be used on any ride whether you are riding your bike, test riding a bike, or riding a friends bike. The unit goes with you, and if you have additional helmet mounts, you can apply them to nearly any helmet you might need to wear. None of this can be said for units that install on the bike to make the brake lights flash. Another nice feature is the Brake Free places the brake light at the helmet level and makes it far more visible than it is at the tail of the bike. All without wires or attachments to the bike itself. Accelerometer The Brake Free units work via an onboard accelerometer that senses when you are accelerating or slowing, the brake lights are triggered when the unit senses you are slowing whether you are applying the brakes or not. This makes the unit drop-dead simple, and it always lights the brakes when you slow. Even if your brake light is burned out, the unit will continue to function as it should. Length of Charge I've ridden up to 9+ hours at a time, and the units continued to work in flashing mode. Flashing mode is the only mode I use. The estimate of 10-12 hours of battery-run time is accurate in my experience. I set up my helmet stand with two USB charging ports/cables, and I keep both helmets charged. I've never had a problem with charging or battery-run times. Since I ride about 20,000 miles per year, I used to feel like I was wearing a target. The problem is too many drivers do not pay sufficient attention to their surroundings while driving. As I said earlier, driver response to my use of the Brake Free units has been very positive with drivers giving me more rear cushion and noticing that I am slowing or braking. Since using the Brake Free units, I have not been rear-ended or had to dodge a near-miss rear-end collision, that used to be a much more consistent problem. I also get many comments from drivers that the unit makes it much easier to see me from the rear. The feedback has been uniformly positive. Personal Recommendation Buy one. The unit is well built, durable, weatherproof enough for a rider in Portland, Oregon, who rides 20,000 miles per year, and it significantly and positively changed the behavior of car drivers following me. The units are available for sale from Brake Free here: Smart Brake Light, Brake Free I advise buying the unit and the spare mounts, that way if you need to swap helmets or want your pillion to wear the Brake Free unit (the front rider should not wear the unit!) you can mount the Brake free quickly and easily. Save 170 bucks and use lite pressure on one of the brakes. Be it our hand foot or thumb brake. I do track days from time to time and I've added a thumb brake control for the rear. It's not currently wired in but a pressure switch could be added and active the brake light.

It really works. That’s good for bicycling and e-biking as well.

How bright is the light during a nice & sunny day? Any feedback from those that have this? Hard to tell in the video... Have a custom rear fender & my tail light isn’t the most visible. Was thinking of getting a new light but this may work.

Great idea for safety purposes and etcetc also it’s not ugly or bulky , I mean it’s a bit of a bulk on the helmet but you have to have something in order to work but it is pretty stylish. So it’s a great idea for safety

The funny part about this to me is that mounting foreign objects to your helmet is illegal in many states 😂

How does this compare to the cheaper one that has led turn signals?…. This only breaks cost 170 compared to 49 which hooks up to your signals and brakes as well

Wouldve Love to get one but they only ship to US and Canada.

If you know how to ship to Canada let me know. Because I live in Canada, and tried to order and was told they don't ship to Canada. Losing a lot of sales not shipping to other countries.

This is pretty sweet. I tend to at least tap my rear break when engine breaking. Since I have a modular flashing break light I hope it at least helps some

What is this third person camera setup, and can it be used for live streaming?
@harcormor4 жыл бұрын
yeah i'm not spending money on something like this...great idea, but the issue of no lights for engine breaking is fixed if you apply enough pressure to one of your brakes to turn them on.
@BrakeFree4 жыл бұрын
The brake function is one of many advantages of riding with one. This is a piece of active high visibility that keeps you visible day and night. It also brings the light to eye level and helps with depth perception for drivers behind you.
@harcormor4 жыл бұрын
Brake Free well I’m still not paying money on something like this. Again I have my own personal braking function for free. And I got news for you...if the cagers aren’t paying attention then it’s not gonna matter...if they looking at their phone or putting on makeup...you can put anything you want in front of them and they aren’t going to notice it...Riding is a risk and that’s something we as riders have to accept and just use defensive driving to keep ourselves safe...that’s the bottom line.

My Tesla has a very strong engine braking ability. The brake lights on my car come on when I take pressure off the accelerator pedal... While on the public streets I think that might have benefits on my motorcycle.

Great concept. I’d like to see motorcycle manufacturers incorporate this technology into the actual brake lights. Or maybe have a wireless module that you could wire into the bike itself that turns on the helmet light when at zero throttle. I think that would be more reliable than an internal accelerometer.
@OrdoGriseo4 жыл бұрын
Though using a TPS to trigger the light would cause it to light up in many superfluous instances, like every gear change when you come of the throttle to change gear
@JanitorJay834 жыл бұрын
Mokrite could program a delay. If throttle is at zero for x seconds, then activate. If a company really wanted to make a system like that, I’m sure with the technology we have now, it would be very doable.

In concept this thing is great but in execution it looks like it could use some refinement. I always ride my road bicycle with a flashing LED taillight so drivers see me much earlier and it works great but the size of the units made for bicycling are tiny in comparison to this. This could be a simple horizontal bar of lights and be just as effective. The second thing that comes to mind is why aren't motorcycle manufactures building this into the regular taillights. Electric cars are already doing this with one-pedal driving enabled where the driver doesn't touch the brake and uses regerative breaking to slow down. Any motorcycle with a 6-axis IMU already has the computing power built-in to make this happen.
