The fact that you can just walk in and make a coffee and sign the guest book when nobody’s about, and that how you talk about it is like it’s how all the little grass strip fields are… I never would have expected that! Very cool!

Hi Terry, nice video and glad you enjoyed the visit to our Farm. Next time you approach 02 from the West, extend your base until you are clear of the village and then approach final over the open farm land which means you have a slight dog leg turn to the right just before the campsite and then touch down. This avoids overflying properties in Ripple. Look forward to seeing you an your next visit.

Thank you so much for letting me visit and on such a busy afternoon, it was a really great day. I realise I got a few things wrong in the video, like the approach for which I apologise. I would love to come back and do it properly and to say "hi", it was such an honour. Hopefully I did a good job of showing how wonderful your farm is and what great ice-cream you make. I didn't get the guys name who cleared the runway, I thought it was you first of all but then realised it wasn't, he was very nice and so helpful, please pass on my thanks. Thanks again Richard really appreciated.

@ShortField
@ShortField 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes good spot, I didn't see those wires until I watched the video back, they are always my biggest concern. I have actually thrown up before when I drank a coffee with off-milk in it at a strip once, since then I always have a few sachet's of decent stuff in my flight bag. Flask is a good idea too especially when they don't even have a kettle.

Hi Terry, thanks for the reply, as always youre welcome - thanks for posting. Yeah I did wonder about those wires, they were almost invisible! Bit hairy that. That would always be my concern. If they can't be buried, in the past they could have brightly coloured sleeving put on them, do they still do that near to small airfields? 🤔🤔 Off milk? Yuk! Been there done that too. Some strips the toilets etc were pretty grim back in the day - at least we didn't have SARS2 to contend with though 🙄🙄🤡😆☹️😆 - that first bog looked mint, so did the kitchen😉👍👍 That second strip? Thanks, a very interesting video. Lots of fun. Camera angles had me gripping the seat a couple of times though! 🤣 20+ years ago I used to fly from White Waltham up to a disused tarmac strip in Bucks. It was privately owned and needed a phone call for permission and instructions as it was also a model aircraft strip. Approach with lights on and overfly at 300ft above giving modellers the warning that the next approach would be a full stop. Overfly was always interesting as the modellers would fly alongside so keeping straight was a necessity. Sunday would see a market at the end of the strip to visit and get snacks. Take off with an immediate right turn to avoid overflying the market. Loved it.

So nice. When I was flying my ultralight in the US in South Florida back in the 1980's, I would drop in at a farm strip that was also a berry farm. ❤ great video Terry, your pleasure of flying into those strips clearly comes over in the video. I’ve done Harringe a few times and you had it easy - you didn’t have to do a low pass to clear the sheep off the runway and then hope that they don’t wander back on when you’re landing … definitely adds to the challenge factor! Great video! Probably a bit too far for you, but I noticed on a recent walk that there is a short field at Newnham in Hertfordshire. Looks like an interesting strip! All the best and thanks for the vids. Rob

Thanks Rob. I had a look on the charts for that area and there's nothing listed, I can see on Google Maps there's what looks like a prepared area of a field with two short runways on it less than 1km to the north of Newnham here 52.02917101374315, -0.18703135352709027 probably a farmers private ad-hoc strip. Have you seen the strip at Graverley?

@@ShortField I'm not entirely sure. I think the site has moved a few times but I dont know whether that's only the model flying club. I think there's word of housing being built in the surrounding fields which would make the area more noise sensitive and kick us out of the site. its already bad enough with just the bike track and a handful of houses down the Vally, but we,ll see. I dont know why they would want to build there but I guess its cheap land to buy up. there's going to be no country side left soon in Kent! 😂

I thought this was short field program. I've landed and taken off from Crop Duster Strips in the Florida Everglades meant for high power Stearman's. Flying a Cessna 152. This strip was half the length recommended for the A/C with about three foot clearance on the wing tips. The take off was a high performance run to clear trees at the end. Normally take off roll for 152 was 750ft. I had just over 400. This skill gave me options in emergencies.

For the takeoff at 17:00, instead of parking at the end of the runway then release brakes from a standstill for takeoff, you can use the open grassy area for a rolling turn while adding full power , you won't blast the crowd with gravel and you'll be airborne significantly earlier than from a fully stationary takeoff roll.

Spent twenty years ... essentially ... doing this everyday! As an ag-driveer daily working off 'unimproved' strips in the middle of nowhere, was a daily challenge, and thrill ... some of the time. More than once, did it where there was no "strip"! Just open ground. In a Bull Stearman no less!! Super Cubs made it a piece of cake. Sooo much fun ... !! Happy for you that you are 1) good enough ... and 2) can get away with it!! Usually some jackass looking over your shoulder telling you, "you can't do that"!!! LOL Best wishes for many more of these 'happy landings'!!!

@@robstarksflyingdiary7475 maybe a bit turbulent as it comes in from the sea and drops down to the field but those crops should dampen it down at the touch-down point. You'll be fine just go-around if you're not happy, but you already knew that. Looking forward to your vid Rob!

This is fascinating, I never knew there was this niche in piloting as nobody ever talks about flying to and from farm strips in the US. Glad I could take a peak into this wonderful different world, I never even knew they would have facilities at such strips- even if a little barebones!

Well by a strange coincidence I have just returned from a tour of France, departing from Calais from Harringe Court, and returning back a week later to Ripple. I’ve been to Harringe a number of times but this was my first visit to Solly’s Farm at Ripple where we too sampled the ice cream and camped overnight. Since you visited the hangars that were under construction have been finished and they’ve converted an old barn into a bar. There was a LAA BBQ when we were there and the owner Stephen Solly couldn’t have been more welcoming. Lovely place. Its about an hour’s walk into Deal, taxi definitely needed for the return journey!
