It's insane to think about how a lot of the most dangerous adults were abused as children. A lot of issues start young.
@WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey
@WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey Жыл бұрын
Yes, I'd say all such issues, the ones that aren't the result of mental illness, are because of childhood trauma. It's definitely true that most if not all abusers were abused themselves - however, there are still far too many people who believe that everyone who suffers abuse will go on to become abusers. Too many abusers and murderers will use their trauma as an excuse and a criminal defence even. But it's absolutely untrue - in fact, it's more common for sufferers of abuse to either internalise the pain and harm themselves and/or become empaths, which is what happened to me. It's a difficult "gift" to have because on the one hand, I absolutely am grateful that I am able to put myself in the shoes of anyone and am able to feel to an extent what they feel, but it can be extremely overwhelming, especially when it comes to hearing about true crime cases involving children. The pain can be so overwhelming that it far exceeds anything I experienced when going through my own abusive experiences. It began at a really young age as well - my mother wouldn't let me watch programmes like Lassie or Black Beauty, because I would lose my absolute sh1t when the animal got stuck in a trap or got hurt etc. But still I am thankful that I am a survivor and despite how awful it sometimes is to feel so many overwhelming feelings, I'd still rather that than feel nothing for others which can also happen, as a kind of defence mechanism from further pain. But imo that is a far worse affliction than feeling others' pain overwhelmingly. Anyway, my love and prayers go out to all children and adults suffering pain and sadness and to all the adults in the lives of those people - I remind you that you do have a choice and your decision to take action could save a life. It's better to risk offending by "poking your nose in" and calling authorities, than to be one of those people we hear about far too often in true crime, who were for whatever reason, one of the ones who saw something but didn't say something. 😔 If someone is being harmed it's automatically YOUR BUSINESS! Much love to all, from Kerry in Kent, England ♥ 🙏

Their behavior in prison should DEFINITELY affect their sentence, but in the other way around: show no remorse, treat other inmates badly, are violet towards guards etc. and their sentence should be longer. But I agree that "good behavior" shouldn't lead to someone who commited such a serious crime getting out so much sooner. It should be the expected standard, not grounds for a reward! For smaller crimes where no one got hurt and the sentences are only months or a few years max anyways? Sure, let people who made one stupid decision once return to their normal lives. But someone who commited sth like murder or rape? Hell no, they should serve their full sentence and THEN be evaluated if they are fit to rejoin society. If they are likely to commit it again, don't let them out.

It breaks my heart to hear of bad mental hospitals. I was on a psych ward a year ago and it was a therapeutic environment, it helped me so so much. I was able to get on meds which helped me, I was referred to supported housing when I was there. I actually had more freedom on the ward than I had at home by the time I was admitted, I was no longer cut off from people, rather I was part of a community. It is so horrible that people end up on psych wards and don't get help they need, and rather get traumatised. Like if the psych ward is a bad place, is there any where you can turn to for the intensive help you need when your mental health isn't just in the gutter, but down the drain? I needed hospital inpatient care. The idea that that care isn't something people who need it can get is horrible.

I am so happy you had a nice experience. I was in a psych ward in 2020 (when i was 16) and we have like 2 different types. One is called the "closed one" where you're under surveillance 24/7, everything (including clothes) is taken from you and locked up, so you need to ask to change, you're searched with a metal detector etc. then there is the "open" one which is way better, you can go into the yard, you can get everything you need when you want and so on. At forst i was in the closed section and it was the worst, not as bad as it was back then probably but i still hated it so much, made me even more su*cidal. Though it did kinda help as i didn't want to go back there ever again so i never tried offing myself again

I was placed in a mental hospital in 2019 when I was 51/50’d for attempting to unalive myself and not being medicated, and unfortunately it was very traumatic for me. The staff was pretty good for the most part, but the other patients I was around is what caused me to have PTSD. There were so many people suffering from different mental illnesses, and as someone who deals with extreme anxiety it was difficult to be around a lot of chaos and unpredictability. I had nightmares for a long time about a few specific patients that really got to me. So needless to say that experience didn’t help me. What helped me was doing intensive outpatient care 5 days a week involving group therapy, education groups, regular meetings with a psychiatrist and I was still able to stay a home. Of course, some people do need to be under 24/7 care, but at least for my case that really helped me. One good thing I can say about the psych ward was that the food was BANGIN

It is so great that you had a good experience, but the ones I've been to have been insanely abusive. Sexually and otherwise. A lot of them mistreat patients and take away basic human rights. Plus, it's very rare that a case against a mental hospital is won because of privacy laws. I've heard horror stories from other patients about hospitals they've been to. They range from kids going to the iso wards for days and coming back in the worst condition possible to forced strip searches after being starved. Most people end up fine after leaving these places, but there are cases like this which are the complete opposite. It's extremely disheartening.

it’s so weird that no one seems to pay attention to the fact that many serial killers or serious criminals were abused/bullied as children.. it’s the kind of thing that should be studied and prevented - damage in that stage of brain development evidently does a number on them. obviously being abused or bullied isn’t an excuse for those actions, but it’s an explanation that should be considered more seriously.

I find it more interesting the serial killers that had a good life as kids, don't have mental health issues legally and still kill torment etc. Although they are rare what made them snap? With the abused kids they had a "reason" or source that started it. My hypothesis is we all have a snap in our minds the serial killer snap it just takes something to activate it,when it activates one of two things happens it takes over or we snap those thoughts and urges out. The snapping point is different for everyone because pain tolerance is different to everyone and the opion of good is different to everyone.

When we were teenagers and drinking, if a grown man had have approached us and said 'oh here I'll buy you alcohol and smokes, let's hang out' me and my friends would have been like 'ah f**k no you're a grown man and you want to hang out with teenagers, that's pathetic, get away from us'. Grown up people do not want to hang out with teenagers just cos they think you're cool, they do not buy you alcohol cos they're nice, they want something from you and it's not friendship. It's grooming.

It really pains me that he pleaded to not be let out of prison and that was ignored! Feels like he really suffered and he knew he couldn't resist when the urges came on. To me it seems like the last three murders were planned, almost like he accepted his dark side after fighting it for so long, while the others before that were more impulsive. I really believe he was feeling remorse. It's all so sad. If he only had been admitted to a paychiatric hospital where he was actually treated then maybe innocent people wouldn't have died. That’s the first thing that came to mind here, the act became a compulsion or addiction to him. People can form unhealthy addictions to all kinds of behaviors. We studied a lady who had an addiction to pulling weeds and so she pulled the weeds from her entire friggin town lol.

I read somewhere an explanation from psychologist or psychiatrist that the reason we (mostly women) love to watch videos like that it’s because it gives us sense of the control over situation. It calms us while we watch it, because we replay all situations like that in our head and think what would we do. It’s like it gives us opportunity to imagine more dangerous situations and think way out of them, plus to know the enemy, the more types of people we know the better we are prepared. Sorry eng is not my native language I hope I made sense 😅

This case is a wild ride. I kinda feel sad - not for David exactly, but because all the boys that he murdered could've been saved if authorities (and I'm using this word because it's more than the police: it's the judicial system, the prisons, the mental health professionals, and everyone else involved in this) had looked at him like the troubled person he was. The fact that we get a man writing a 5 pages letter to authorities saying he can't be let out of prison because he knows he'll kill again and they let him go is absolutely infuriating. I think they should've kept him in prison from the first murder, and done an extensive psychic evaluation.

Please consider covering the case of missing 4yr old Paulette Gebrara!!! She was born with special needs, did not have the ability to walk, form sentences, or properly feed herself. Her parents were very wealthy, both are lawyers. They employed multiple nannies to take care of their children. One morning when a nanny went to go wake Paulette up for the day she realized that the girl was not in her bed and alerted her coworkers. They frantically began searching the entire house, when they told her parents they could not find heard they didn't seem alarmed at all and did not even get up to go look for her or call the authorities. The nannies were the ones to dial 911 and report her missing. News crews came to the residents to interview the parents and filmed a lot of them inside Paulette's bedroom while sitting on her bed. Many family members stayed the night at the residence while police searched for the missing 4yr old sleeping on Paulette's bed. Weeks later a crime scene investigator was conducting an additional search inside her room and while being filmed made a gruesome discovery. It was Paulette's decaying body at the foot of the bed stuffed under the sheets!!!!! It was awful (the footage of this discovery is on KZbin and I watched it)

I want to preface this by saying I’m not defending him at all, but that I think the way individual’s minds function does have an impact on repetitive behaviors or repetitive behaviors that they know logically are wrong. Mental illness is very tricky and when you experience trauma early in your childhood, like he appears to have can create that separation from you in reality, simply, because you can’t handle it. I was listening to the point where you said “it’s not like an addiction you can’t stop, just don’t go in those situations if that’s how you know you are” but that’s literally the struggle of most addicts. They may know logically what’s going to happen but they are pulled to it. When you mix trauma related thoughts it makes it worse as well. If we do want to go with his urge to murder isn’t an addiction it could also be an uncontrollable compulsion. When you speak to a lot of people with OCD, that’s how it is as well. You logically may no you don’t need or shouldn’t do certain things but your mind won’t allow you to come off the thoughts. And people with either of these conditions, or a few others that are similar may be very self-aware. They may know that this is not right or that they feel bad for doing it or that they don’t need to do this thing or something bad will happen but their brain doesn’t function that way. I’m begging to stay in jail and begging to stay away from society at least shows me that he was self-aware enough to recognize the fact that if you went out again, he would’ve never really come into a situation where this could happen again and he didn’t want it. I definitely want to read more into this set of murders and just kind of how his thought process went and other things he may have struggled with by interviews. I’m sure he’s done with psychiatrists because something to me just feels off and not like normal offset a serial killer makes you feel just eerily off

The situation about him getting the 12 years off is normal. It works like that in a lot of countries, the time you spent in jail prior to a sentence can be included as already served especially if it’s a long time. It’s basically as if they were backdating the start of his sentence :)
@ar9349
@ar9349 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it would be really upsetting t9 me if it didn't work that way. Regardless of the crime committed, we can't just lock up our citizens indefinitely until their trial and then on top of that give them a prison sentence. I also think it's unacceptable that it took 12 years for this man to wait for his trial. He belonged in prison once found guiltu, but it's still an injustice. I can't imagine if that had been an innocent man. There's truly no way to make reparations for over a decade in prison.
@Iris-bz6xx
@Iris-bz6xx Жыл бұрын
@@ar9349 yeah no I agree, 12 years for a case that didn’t even look that complex is inexcusable. Usually they will keep someone in prison until trial if they fear releasing them poses a threat to the investigation/ the person is a flee risk/ might re offend in between etc… But yeah it does make sense and it is normal that the first 12 years were counted as served. The rest of the sentence that was left to serve tho should have never been halted !

i personally have no issue with them taking the 12 years off the sentence, as i wouldn’t agree with the precedent that people should be allowed to sit in jail for 12 years waiting for trial and potentially proved innocent. the real issue is that he only got 30 years, which was then halved, for the murder of a child + the assault of another child, after being accused of assaulting multiple other children and put in jail for manslaughter. the core issue is the short sentence for the horrific crimes IMO

Another really informative and thoughtful video. Thanks for making such consistently entertaining content. I was literally saying “Today’s case takes place…” in my best Yorkshire accent all morning and I shouted excitedly when I saw your video posted. Also, “less time served” is a pretty common thing in the states. Many court proceedings can take months if not years so they subtract the time spent incarcerated in a jail in some (if not most) cases. Honestly, that policy is one of the most humane practices in our justice system. Imagine being incarcerated for two years, living in a penal institution, to be given a similar or shorter sentence and having to serve additional time for a petty crime. Now 6 months for a repeat traffic offender has turned into nearly 3 years?? So the practice isn’t meant to benefit people like this and it’s one that I think is applied overall for the sake of “fairness” or whatever. IMHO equating murderers with people who are smoking weed in a state where it’s illegal is just not the morally reasonable practice, but the really evil people benefit from something meant to be fair to people who are less egregious offenders. Take everything I have said with a grain of salt; other than true crime, I have NO FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE of the criminal justice system or procedures outside of family members who have been involved on all sides of the system.
