Instructor:
► Paramore, Underøath, The Almost and now, his own solo album. Aaron wears more hats than we can keep track of and he wears all of them extremely well. Currently the touring drummer for Paramore, Aaron offers a unique perspective on what it means to be a working drummer and an artist at the same time. He’s all-in and his drum lessons reflect that.

Aaron is SO heavily influential to me as a drummer. His ethos that technique is like a tailor-made piece of clothing for individual players, & that there is no "one correct" technique really fills that self-doubting hole I always catch myself in. Very blessed & thankful for these lessons that 180 Drums have put together with him & I've really enjoyed watching & learning. Thank you.

Screw all those kids. I’ve always said that Aaron is the best. There’s way more technical people or whatever but look at him. He made metal groovy and choppish. Like no one can groove and make a sick beat like him. And he probably has the fastest singles ever.

Have him back! His attitude makes it. I hate when drummers act “too cool” in interviews and lessons. Great content!

I think when you’re hitting that hard you lose significant rebound
@jamisbillson4872

Music Time Space. No you don’t mate. It’s practice is all. It’s all in the wrists and fingers for controlling rebound with hard hitting. Ilan Rubin hits as hard as any drummer I’ve seen but his ghost noting is subliminal. I’m not into drummers who say “I play this way”. You play to the song. Not to your own style and patterns you have already learned. Worst video from these chaps I’ve seen for a long time.
@Drummerman02

Jamis Ins sure. Thing is here Aaron’s drumming is based on single strokes, so his volume “compensates” for lack of technicality. Regardless, no drummer should be bound to one group of dynamics.

Music Time Space...spot on. I play open handed...been following Ilan Rubin for years now. He’s ambidextrous but I didn’t know that when I started leading left handed...best thing I ever did. So when he calls your weak hand “The idiot hand” I thought...I don’t have one of those. This chap seems to have both! Hugely grateful for these uploads but the worst lesson I’ve seen on this channel. He’ll probably do a killer drumming video next. That’ll shut us up.

Jamis Ins underoaths new album is quite impressive. Solid drums, and hybrid stuff. I remember how fast or intense Aaron used to play back with Meinl. Maturity as a drummer slows us down, exploring rudiments is keys to growth. Ghost notes are just as important as rests, or heavy accents. Great talk bud.

Music Time Space Yeah mate. It’s nearly 1am here. I reckon it’s about all the things we are influenced by. I don’t want to play like Buddy Rich. He may be the greatest ever drummer but that style bores the hell out of me. But I could watch Ilan Rubin all day...I do actually some days. I actually think this lesson would harm improvement? That makes sense to me. Anyway mate. Good night and rock on friend.

So I'm a huge Aaron Gillespie fan, but you can absolutely tell he has zero traditional percussion training. The fact he is counting to eight instead of calling them 8th notes and saying to play 1 measure right, 1 measure left, 2 measures right tells me this. This was one of our warm ups for drumming in high school. I'd count this 1 te, 2 te, 3 te, 4 te. All this said, obviously he blows my playing out of the water.

Ok, that's a good workout. But what I don't like is for someone to say their style is playing hard or heavy. You should play normally, and play soft or heavy when you need to, but not always. That takes away from the subtleties and intricacies. Unless the only thing you play requires hard and heavy all the time. That's the problem with a lot of drummers, being able to play the correct strength or loudness and control it. But the workout is good for building up the weaker hand. But I'd say more time on the weaker hand rather than doing them equally, since the point is to strengthen the weaker hand anyway.

That's right, perfect example U2. They couldn't play an instrument when they started their band, but ended up learning a couple chords and how to keep a beat eventually. And as awful musicians they are, made millions of dollars.

This is very poor information for beginners. Playing like this will lead to injury. There's a reason drummers like Lars and Peart have broken down while Steve Smith is still rocking it with journey.

Probably because journey plays the same beat at around 120bpm every song, yeah I think any 90 year old drummer could still pull off the first beat we all learned.
