The wind was ripping for several days strait and I mean blasting. 20-25 knots on the forecast and blowing what felt like 25-35 at my house. Having not fished in a week my friend and I were hoping to sneak out for a quick trip. Saturday I woke up and it was still blasting at my house so I decided to call it off. Later that night the wind calmed to 10 knots while I was at the airport. I conferred with my friend and we decided to make the call in the morning based on where he was in the central valley. He said the wind was 10 knots at 230 in the morning and it seemed around 15 knots at my place so we decided to make the call from the launch. We headed out after deciding it was safe. From previous experience I had a feeling that this would be the case and then the wind would start blasting 1-2 hours after sunrise. My main plan was to deep drop before sunrise and then go for pelagic. On the way out I caught 2 goggle eyes. From there I continued out to 600ft to start deep dropping. Not particularly marking anything I made my first drop and started getting bites right away. They were what felt like small bites but 600ft down you’re really counting on circle hooks to do the work for you. Once I felt reasonably sure I had a fish on I stared reeling. Around 6 minutes later I got it to the surface. It was what I would later find out was a deep sea moi or more commonly known as a beard fish. I figured it wouldn’t survive going back down and so I kept it. All of my wahoo belly bait chunks were still intact so I dropped it again. With only 12oz of lead it took about 3 minutes it make it to the bottom. After hitting the bottom I put the reel in gear and turned to put the beard fish in my fish bag. I had been expecting more tiny bites but as I turned back around he rod was doubled over. At this point I had no idea of what to expect after all this was only my 8th deep drop, ever. I knew it was bigger than the last fish as it was pulling drag at first and then periodically as I brought it up. It was now 10 minutes before sunrise as I slowly brought the fish up. It took about 15 minutes but when it was close I saw a huge back mass and I wondered what the heck it was. During the fight I was really only hoping that it wasn’t a shark. I took some pictures and sent them to a few people while I looked online. I had seen one caught on KZbin before but I couldn’t remember what it was. After a lot of deliberation I decided to put it in my fish bag and take it in. It was a little over 5 feet long and I had to bend the tail to get it in my fish bag. I didn’t get the fish bag oriented quite right and the kayak was very tippy as I made my way towards my friend on the 200ft ledge. He had actually helped land the fish about 10 minutes prior. The wind came up on cue right at an hour after sunrise and we started making our way in.

The fish turned out to be an oil fish or Walu in Hawaiian. It is also called the diarrhea fish... You can read more about the trip in the description.

Nice catch! I caught one on my Hobie Pro Angler 12 here in Guam. I was jigging for Monchong at 1000 feet with a 450g jig and caught it right after sunset. I was very confused on what it was when I got it next to the kayak. Ended up weighing 50lbs and was the biggest fish to date on the yak. Found out they are called Escolar or Oilfish. Scales feel like needles. I actually caught one again last night on a boat at one of the banks here again dropping down to 1000ft with a 350g jig. I gave mine away to the locals due to all the stories I heard about being a laxative fish.

Nice Walu (aka Hawaiian Butterfish, oilfish), congratulations! Rare catch, and I think the first from a kayak. They have a very rich flesh, extremely tasty, but beware, eat only in moderation as the oil in the flesh is undigestable, so it goes straight thru you like a laxative. Remember, small portions only. 😉

Used to catch those at night fishing for tuna. They would come up and be 60-100ft deep even in 1500ft of water. Super delicious sashimi and lightly cooked for tacos. You can’t eat a lot otherwise it’ll turn your bowels inside out (never actually had that problem in all my years eating it so idk how much is too much) but a 30-40lb fish would get divided between 4 guys and keep us happy for about a month

I can't remember what this one was, but it was the one that came with my garmin 64cv. This was before they started putting crappy transducers in the 64cv. I have a 74sv now with a GT 51 transducer. I would get a GT 51 if you have a garmin, they are 500 bucks though.

Walu. Banned in some countries and in some restaurants here in Hawaii. We served it at a restaurant I cooked at, but never more than a 6oz portion. Except the a-hole owner. He'd always order a double portion.

I did not know that they had those fish in Hawaiian waters. We catch them sometimes at night in Mexico. They are called “Escolar” there. Very white opaque flesh, very oily and from what I heard from people who have eaten them, “Diarrhea fish” is an accurate moniker for them. 🤙🏼 And that was a big “ass” spider!

Thanks I know it by escolar and not oilfish lol. I've had it, it's good, I just didn't know it could cause diarrhea if you eat too much. Apparently it's because it contains wax esters instead of just oil. The more you know lol

This fish is very good we call them Uravena here in Tahiti French Polynesia but no many people like to eat them because of the reputation of diarrhea Fish or Purge Fish💩 because of his white meat very oily but very good taste if you don't want to run on the toilet just dip the fish meat in fresh lemon for about 10min and after cook in a pan or on the BBQ you ill see oily buble came out of it...its very good😋👌
