Most of the time I place spear fishing on the back burner to kayak fishing. I’ll plan dual trips but will either wuss out from seeing a tiger shark or my kayak being over loaded in rough conditions. This trip I had all of my kayak fishing gear and my spear fishing gear loaded in the kayak. It is significant the difference another 20 lbs of gear makes. My friend from work was supposed to meet me around 10 am on his boat to do some spear fishing. I caught a bunch of bait and put two lines out. Over the next several hours I would get a few hits, but I would only be able to convert on one. As it would happen I would only get wahoo hits in the rough conditions. The swells were around 5 feet and the wind was 15 knots. The first wahoo hit in screaming fashion, ripping off 200ft of line in a matter of seconds. It was way out up on the surface and I backed my drag off to bring the fish in. Wahoo usually burn themselves out on their first runs and this one came in pretty easily after. I got the fish by the tail and set up to get a good photo. When I first started on IG I got a good photo of a yellow fin tuna that kind of put me on the map and I wanted to replicate the shot with a wahoo. I did everything I could but didn’t quite turn enough to have the light perfectly illuminate the fish. I guess Ill just have to catch another one to get the picture I had in mind. The first wahoo that hit for the morning was on for around a minute when I lost tension coming down a swell. Bad luck to some extent but I suspect that it wasn’t hooked all that well. With my last two baits I was running a long bait on wire suspended below a ballon and another short bait with about 80 feet of line out also with wire. At this point I realized my coworker would not be coming anytime soon. I figured I might as well head in as it was nearly 930. I decided to drift for another 30 minutes as the current was taking me the right direction anyway. Not long after another wahoo hit my bait under the ballon but I managed to screw it up. I was under the assumption that wahoo ran hard enough to set the hooks themselves. Maybe it was this trip but I decided that I needed to actually set the hooks on the next wahoo. I fished a little longer but the action was over and I headed in. I didn’t end up jumping in the water without a partner.

Dan, you really are a legend man. It amazes me how you handle your yak and everything going on. You make it looks easy but it’s far from that especially in these kind of conditions. Great video. Hope you enjoy your catch!!

Thanks Steffen! I was going for a certain kind of photo, but didn't get turned into the light quite enough. I would like to put up a lot of fishing photos, but I don't think my wife would like that.

Dan another awesome video. When you picked the location of your Garmin and transducer, what were the main reasons behind those particular spots? If you could change (if you feel it could be better) the location of both the fish finder and transducer, where would it be?

found you from killer bees channel. awesome video, how is the stability on that revo?
@reykennedy5716
@reykennedy5716 3 жыл бұрын
Never been on one, but everyone says not as stable as a outback of course. They have decent stability. But their weight and slimmer hull makes them cut through the water easier. People seem to like them for fishing miles offshore. Personally I'd call them a semi pro or enthusiast level kayak.

Awesome video! I'm always amazed at the small size hooks you use for those big fish. I'm curious, have you tried the 4x treble hooks for the stinger? For me, its been a game changer for the kingfish/Wahoos. But I am not sure if the bite ratio stays as good. Cheers!

Thanks man. Where are you fishing? I have done some shallower water fishing in the gulf of mexico and in texas recentlyl. In those places its only 40-60ft deep, but we found action around reefs, and artificial structure.

Awesome catches! May I ask you, how you like the penn 8500 live line reel? I see you were using it on your previous trip but switch back to the non live line reel on this trip, any reason? Debating if I should get 8500 regular verses live line reel. Mahalo!

They are the most frustrating fish to catch from a kayak in my experience. I caught all but one of my ono on the windward side of the island. There has to be a lot of them where you're fishing. Do you do many road trips with your kayak? Seems like you mostly fish in Hilo bay.
@AffordableWahoo

@@FlyingFish_TV Thanks for the reply! Thats interesting I wonder why they're so stacked on that side over there. I'm sure get out windward side here cuz the boat guys catch often. I only roadtrip when its too rough this side, but its almost always worth the drive.

Great video What do you use as a leader? Wire?
@FlyingFish_TV
@FlyingFish_TV 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Martin. I have a 50ft fluoro leader to 40lb coffee colored single strand wire stinger rig. I use a tiny 50lb spro swivel, a 3/0 live bait hook for the main hook, and smaller treble or another live bait hook for the stinger. The stinger is about 3" behind the main hook. The swivel is about 6" to 1ft above the main hook.
