This reminds me of two things. First, many conversations I've had, mostly with older people, where they didn't think it was possible for someone to use another person's picture for themselves. Any sort of impersonating or lying couldn't happen because "The government wouldn't allow that! You can't lie in the internet " Second, there was a guy i worked with many many years ago. He insisted he had a girlfriend in the Philippines that wanted to marry him, but he had never seen her or heard her voice; they would only communicate through email and text messaging. He would send "her" thousands of dollars a month,, as well as buy gifts. One time he bought and sent a brand new laptop,, so they could video talk; unfortunately the mic ended up being faulty and the camera got broke in transit

Calling a florida man crazy is like calling the sun hot
I currently know someone who I had to break it to that they were being catfished (the insane amount of money was already sent off before we met but they were still talking to each other). You’d be amazed how naturally she’d say the most wild lies she was given, like they made perfect sense, all because the vague idea of technology is so all-knowing and terrifying that any BS excuse for not meeting up or talking even on FaceTime makes perfect sense. I felt terrible having to break her heart (she thought she was talking to a potential romantic partner) but it wasn’t even sneaky. I put her onto the show and am letting her sort of draw conclusions at her own pace but I think she stopped talking to him at least.

I work for a credit union, you will be amazed just how frequent "romance scams" are. It is a daily occurrence basically and it is to a point that if someone mentions "my friend, my gf/bf overseas" is enough to block your account till its investigated.
@stellarmori2 күн бұрын
I wish there was a better solution because as common as these scams are, it's equally if not more common for it to be true. especially these days, long distance relationships are much more feasible so sending money to a "bf/gf overseas" happens quite often. so if it's blocked every time that happens, i can imagine it being very inconvenient not only for the scammers, but for people who are in genuine relationships with real people
@AngelMartinez-bt8tt2 күн бұрын
@stellarmori Sadly you are correct. It is a fine line between security and inconvenience. However, the damage the fraudsters can do is huge and until a better security method can be used, it must be this way. I once spoke with a member that deposited a $20k check, their "partner" gave them so that he can then send $10k back. He deposited it and withdrew the funds, only for the check to bounce. I had to tell them that they are responsible for the -$18,500.00 on the account. Was not good news to give as he started crying and screaming as he thought we would cover the loss.

Pardon? Romance Scams?
@AngelMartinez-bt8tt2 күн бұрын
@D.W.M.T.Y.A.W._CheckAbout_ Yeah, that's the term for scammers that trick people by acting as a potential partner. As an example it could be a "woman" overseas that starts a long distance relationship with you but, she doesn't have the funds to be with you. So she asks for money so that she can be together with you. With AI being a thing now, its even easier for these scams to happen.

I've always disliked headphones for the most part. Shutting out all the ambient sounds makes me jumpy, so we have decent speakers on this computer, as well as a subwoofer. The "got your nose" sound effect resonated throughout our small frame house, jolted the dog out of his post-wake-up snooze, and set him barking at nothing. Having done his bit as a small, fluffy watch-monster, he moved to another chair and promptly went back to sleep. Now he's in here with me, and I'm tempted to replay the nose bit. I mean, he gets so much gratification from scaring away noisy... _things,_ however invisible they might be. I love doggers. They're so consistent.

@RaccoonMan643 күн бұрын
There’s two types of Floridians; people like Charlie, and this guy. There’s no in between.
Here’s what they do. Someone from Nigeria usually romance scams two people. He uses one as a unknowing money mule since they need US bank accounts, and scams the other to get the money initially. Usually the scammer would be the one pretending to be musk and give the woman the guy in FL’s bank info to send money to. Then the scammer tells the man in Florida that they got the money through whatever means and to send it to them in Bitcoin. That could be what the guy is saying.

To be the tiniest bit fair, our brains are wired in a completely different way than older people’s when it comes to technology. It may seem foreign to us, but you have to keep in mind that our developmental years were chock full of technology that couldn’t even be conceived when they were that age, which makes it understandable when this shit happens. It does happen to real people, and it does affect their lives, and there’s really nothing that we can do about it aside from inform. Half a million Elon musk is unhinged though lol
