4123 with Half Back is a favorite for me. By the way, the only manager that I saw using HB in real life is Jorge Jesus. He was using Fejsa in Benfica, he used Arao at Flamengo then bought Arao to Fenerbahce and he is using him in this position now.

Loved the video. Top content as per. My favourite ever HB was Lucas Tousart the season before he went to Herta IRL. Based my Serie A winning side around him. His mentals made him an interception machine as the base of a 433.

Im now undefeated wit my 3CB tactic with 2 Halfbacks.I play journeyman save with DOF-challenge so my players are nothing special. So it can work. Three at back i use WCB-Libero-WCB.

They are traditional wingbcks. If you go to the tactics subforum on the SI forums, it's a post that has 'Maslov's Tiki Taka' or something similar in the title. I'm on my phone At the moment and can't look. Original poster went into some very good details there.

The HB is such a great role. Back in FM19/20 I always used the HB in a 4-3-3 to create my preferred back 3 systems. Probably my favourite of the defensive roles in midfield. I'd go HB over BWM or DM every day, unless I am looking for one of the playmaking roles.

Really suprise to see Half Back plays better in FM23, I used Declan Rice as HB in FM22 did well, but he did it better in FM23. He drop and sweep any through ball coming in, and recycle the ball while playing through ball. I pair him with two tall DC who sweep high long ball and cross. Creating really hard to crack wall, with my wingbacks freely attacking the flanks. I combine HB with NCB at DC works well but cant get it right with BPD or CD, I think there is a way to make it work but NCD works quite good for now.

I've been playing a formation I read about on the forums, based on Maslovs...well, I guess it could be a 4-3-3, but its 2 D(C)'s, 2 Wingbacks, a HB behind to CM's, Two AM's and a forward. High Tempo, short passing, vertical tiki take with some pressing...and it's been a blast to play. Sure, I get a few games where I have 13 and 2 with 65% possession and my opponent had 5 and 2 and I lose 1-0, but then I have games like the where I am two men down, and my DM (who's turning into a wonderkid), helps us maintain a 74% possession advantage and ends up with 197 PsC and 202 Prd in 76 minutes of playing, and we held onto a 1-1 draw. I've been a 2 striker at the top type of formation for a long time, but I am really liking this formation.

Do the the wingbacks sit in a flat back four? Or are they positioned further up in the traditional wingback position?

I assume its very front foot and you have the wingbacks in the wingback slot as opposed to the FB slot. With the HB you can be very aggressive

Half back has been my favourite role for years, just unlocks so much, as you say. I like a tall converted centre back type who can pass. Forcing myself to play 442 this year so I don't use this role yet again 😆

Its a good role and a 442 is a very good system, I can see why its kept you away from halfback systems.

Very interesting. I've been using a DM on defend, but a HB might be worth trying. Just an idea though: if you're demonstrating tactics or roles, it might be worth using the editor to make them 100% familiar. Otherwise they may be drifting into other positions.

Its a bit of a luxury for me personally having a player sit high up the pitch and being a fulcrum through which other attacking patterns develop.

@@BusttheNet You are right actually, in game it seems difficult to make it work. I was just thinking of playing Argentina 86 style and thinking of creating tactic for this but maybe Maradona would be a SS and not Enganche?. Also desperately i want to use Enganche in a tactic functionally at least once :)
