It´s not a stall, it´s a spray turn, fully under control, and designed to align the chopper with the next spray run so that full spray coverage is achieved. I sed to do this all the time.

LOL. if a chopper could "drift" (like a race car) would this have been considered so? Seems to me he was being a little arrogant up there with his maneuvers.

man it is cool
@jfrancismacdonald27583 жыл бұрын
@@equallywrong No, it's a "production" job, and while it may seem aggressive it's actually a very controlled manuever designed to keep the disc loaded and afford the pilot the opportunity to p/u airspeed before starting the next line. It's a basic procedural turn often repeated hundreds of times a day.

I sprayed with fixed wing aircraft when I was a kid but also have a helicopter license. It's a pedal turn just like others have said here - most effective, quite safe. I know this was posted many years ago but couldn't resist:)

Yeah I'm no pro, that's for sure, but I'm slowly learning about helis and have had a few goes with my godfather on their farm down here in Australia. I'd like to get my licence some day soon though. I'm probably going to fck this explanation up... But it looked like a completely routine pedal manoeuvre from my perspective... And from what I understand, isn't the risk of stall when making a turn like that, when you overspeed the aerofoil on the exit of the turn through too much forward momentum? As opposed to a fixed wing aircraft, where the risk of stall is obviously from losing too much airspeed over the wing, as you make the turn and trade that forward momentum off in the rotation. He looked to me like he slowed it down and picked up his speed well within the margins and I wonder if the original poster thinks that he appears to be stalling because of the lack of forward momentum, which would be the very opposite of what increases the risk of losing lift. I'm probably not explaining that well. I dunno, never looked like he lost lift to me though.

Hammerhead stall for fixed wing. Saw a pilot do that with a brand new AG-Cat back in the days of 600 HP radial engines. He’s pull straight up after a swath run, kick the rudder just as he was about stall (full hopper was 350 gallons and about 3,000 lbs), then dive into the next swath run from that. Ag pilots are the best! Seat of the pants all the way. Never seen it done rotary wing-this guy knows his machine!

Spray turns/hammer heads not stalls. Probably one of the most dangerous aspects of commercial helicopter work, as it’s almost always near power lines, tree tops, and in zero wind conditions(which is always early morning or late at night).

Whatever one would like to call it stall turn, spray turn etc, I know it as a torque turn, it is still an impressive very skilled manoeuvre. Appreciate it, as drones are taking over, crop dusting in aircraft and helicopters will become a lot less.

@nocotton So, are you saying a drone will never have a turbine powerplant? There is no rule that says a drone can only use an electric motor. Most drones are small and limited on how much they can lift. Notice I said "most" and not "all." There are drones that can do some heavy lifting. As technology progress, we should be seeing more and more drones doing this type of work and then some. They have drones that can fly along the side of tall buildings to fight fire. Other machines do the most dangerous work for us. A drone able to carry that payload? It may not exist. At least, not yet anyway...

My neighbor had his own spray plane & sprayed his crops for years. One year he had troubles with his plane & hired a helicopter to do some spraying. My Dad & I stopped to talk to him & watch the spraying. My Dad asked him if he was going to trade his plane for a helicopter. He said "Hell no did you see the size of the rotor shaft? It's the size of my thumb. You couldn't pay me to get in one of those". This was 30 years ago or more.

Philip Casey, This video was not an example of retreating blade stall and retreating blade stall was not what the OP meant when he described the helicopter in the video as "stalling", i.e. like a fixed wing aircraft would stall. Helicopters do not stall in the way a fixed wing aircraft stall, and that is what the OP is erroneously conveying in the video.

This is mild. The fella's that used to do my brotherinlaws farm were all ex nam pilots and they would stand the choppers on end while getting lined up for the next pass. There were spraying potato plants and many times would come back with vines hanging on the spray boom. They used both bell-47's or the tomcat version of a bell-47 which has a very narrow cockpit rather then the big heavy bubble. Sadly many years later the fella that took me up for heck of ride was killed coming back to base after moving west. He missed a wire at dusk and it took him down. RIP Frank.

@bronco5334 Жыл бұрын
If the forward airspeed is lower than the fixed-wing aircraft would use, you would need to spray from higher: you are putting down a less-dense pattern from higher, but you're also spending more time over the target because you're slower. The slower you fly, the higher you need to be (or the lower volume-per-minute your sprayer has to deliver) to get the same spray density on the target.

@bronco5334 Жыл бұрын
It's not a stall. A fixed-wing aircraft would have to stall to perform a similar maneuver, but this isn't a fixed-wing aircraft. It is a helicopter. And the wings, IE the airfoils, IE the rotor blades, do not stall during this maneuver. They are producing lift the whole time. The pilot is simply tilting the rotor disc backwards to slow down, using the tail rotor to make a yaw turn, then tilting the rotor disc to provide thrust in the direction the pilot wants to fly.
