Hello.......That reminds me of when I took an old circle saw and fixed it upside down to a Harbor Freight portable folding work station bench. Like yours, it required common sense and good situational awareness to keep from danger, but it worked so impressively well that I don"t know how I ever did without it ! After decades of use (I heated every home I raised my boys in with wood) the boys long since moved out on their own, and that thing still works ! I cut tree limbs, dimensional lumber, and even 4x8 sheets of old ply-wood with it. My motto is: I've done so much, for so long, with so little, I am now qualified to do anything, with nothing. And it just keeps on getting better....... Keep up the good fight, Dan.

Hey PawPaw , Hey I found out that my mom didn't have tv ( dish network ) any more cause of the cost of the programing. So I built the antenna from your plans and then took it apart but left the srews so there would not be any lost screws. She could get pbs and one of the networks but, from your antenna she now gets 23 channels ! What an awesome thing that she now has to enjoy ! Thanks PawPaw I appreciate it greatly ! From your Idaho friend now in Arizona !

My dad did this with a circular saw decades ago, one of those little side drive skillsaw 6-7 inch dongles I thought he was crazy for playing around with the branches.. eventually I came around though after I don't know how many piles of branches I burnt or tossed down the hillside for erosion control.. There's a lot of wood between 1-3 inches on a tree, piles of it actually. Good stuff man! I can't afford a tshirt, but you've got my subscription. It's a shame I don't have you as a neighbor.

Dear Hill Billy.Who calls you Crazy Man? If it is crazy to want to save money, or use Good Old American Ingenuity to make things work or work better, well then I am Crazy too. You are an inventive genius. I have been a union inside wireman (electrician) for those unfamiliar with the term wireman for over 50 years. The rule of the day was always "work smart not hard". Kudos to you with the whole foot switch and bolt-on chainsaw. I feel I have been opened up to a whole new world here, and look forward to checking in on you each day. As Jesse Waters from the Bill O'Reilly Show says---"I'm Waters, and this is my world". Well then you are Hill Billy and this is your world. Loved all of it. Keep up the good work!!! New subscriber.

I am sure you picked up some of your traits of "workin' smart, not hard" from your dad. Mine passed in 1980. I still miss him. He never talked about WWII. Guess the ones who saw the most, said the least. I had the pleasure of working with many many vets from WWIi during my career. They are the "Greatest Generation".

I like the idea, cutting small stuff is so hard to manage but I'm trying to come up with a way to cut from above and let the weight of the piece assist the feed, rather than have to keep lifting over and over again. I love that idea, I might have to make one myself. I have a suggestion though. Feed the branches from the top, with the chainsaw mounted on a pivoting plate, then attach a regular heavy duty light switch to it with a rod so it automatically comes on when you put a branch on it (branch moves bar down, moves handle up, handle pulls up on rod which pulls up on light switch, branch is cut through and stops pushing down, saw pivots back to off position). I'd also rig up some sort of sliding cover for the bar with a V notch that opens up when a branch is set in it. Maybe have a stop (or stops) on it so you can set it slightly smaller than arm size, or leg size, or whatever you're trying to not cut.
@DoingItCheap9 жыл бұрын
+Jason Riley Thanks for watching and sharing your ideas. I already have planned to put a brace sticking straight up so I can cut from above, but I do not want an auto on feature. The foot switch is my safety. I place it far enough away from the saw that my hand cannot reach the chain. I hope you subscribe as well. I have a drawing every time I hit 500 subs !!

question: the angle iron used in this video, did you drive it into the ground to steady it or what did you do? Looked like a great little invention. I wanna try it myself
@DoingItCheap9 жыл бұрын
+okmoontan It is bolted to my trailer. That way I just unplug and go and the chainsaw goes with me. When I am done, I unbolt the chainsaw and leave the angle iron bolted to the trailer. I am going to do a modification to it. I want a piece of angle iron above the bar so I can lay the wood on top of the bar instead of applying lifting pressure to cut. Thanks for watching. I hope you subscribe !

It is a real good idea to get all power saws up to full speed before starting to cut. Watching you reminded me I had a close call cutting apple wood branches. I was using a large 'Chop Saw' to cut chunks for the BBQ. A stick musta had a hard knot or something ...All I know is the whole damn thing went *Bang* and jumped into the air. Heavy shop stand and all. I asked my kid if he knew what happened. He said "I don't think you waited for the saw to get to full speed on that cut"

A few years ago bought a used mitre saw for just your purpose. Just set it to 90 degree and began chopping. I'd say it is a whole lot safer as the guard lifts as I cut but falls back into place as the blade comes up. Also I use the original switch in the handle as that is more of a dead-man switch over a foot pedal. Still have have a good working idea.

Great video, thanks! You need a guard covering at least the top and the front of the chain, just in case you lose balance or otherwise fall. I see you have your on-off pedal positioned such that you have to lean back to use it to keep you away from the chain, but when you let off that pedal there is more than enough time for you to fall onto that chain before it comes to a complete stop. Just something to think about. :-)
