When I was a kid back in the 60's, my uncle had a factory made weed mower that worked basically the same way, but was more refined. It had high wheels, and a cover over the blade, except for about an inch that stuck out. The blade was belt driven, so if you hit something solid it wouldn't damage the engine. Worked very well.

Well...I just put this on my MAKE THIS list. Years ago a friend of mine modded his lawn mower, he removed the front of the deck (like yours) but he added a single rear swivel wheel and a bit of weight so it wouldn't tip forward accidentally. His blade was a circle of thick galvanized sheet metal with teeth like a saw blade but pointing backwards and slightly curved so the had a shearing cut. He quickly added a Plexiglas splatter shield after the first run. Oh yeah, it was a self powered mower with a belt of headless screw in the tires for traction... He had other specialized blades like a piece of rebar to break thick stalks and small saplings, and an actual circular saw blade (with negative hook) for thicker bushes. Spectators were always required to be 100 feet behind and away!!!

Reminds me of my dad, but more extreme. Dad was born on a farm in Indiana in the 30's. You save what little trash you generate, especially metal, and repurpose. If you can't afford it, make it. If it doesn't exist, invent it. You didn't just simply go out and buy or replace something because of the money situation. No special tools? Find an alternate way to accomplish the task. You use your brain to survive and make life easier. People love to discredit rural technology, but they are the same people that are completely lost without electricity or computerized gadgets. They also do not possesss the knowledge, talent or ability to do make due using only your wits and available materials. So sad that so many people are so ignorant now.

Awesome! You're a man with the same traits I have. All my life I've turned things people were throwing away into something useful. I've even built things from junk stuff I just had laying around. One of the best things I ever made was building a contraption to power my 1938 Singer industrial sewing with bicycle pedals. I have a video on KZbin titled 'Bicycle pedal powered sewing machine'. I've made several improvements since I posted that video. If I ever find someone who needs overgrown weeds and I built a machine like yours, I give you my word that I will use it with the utmost caution.

I've done something like that, cut the front out into a U or V shape between the front wheels, welded some angle on the deck to support the front wheels and with the blade exposed between the wheels it would knock down overgrowth real quick...but they are dangerous...especially if your kinda simple minded...lol

Reminds of my grandfather back in the late 60's. He was a subsistence farmer. Whole family coming in for Easter and his mower rotted to pieces. He built a two wheel verision out of scrap wood using the old mowers motor and blade. Basically the same thing you have but made from wood with no baffles or sides and the wheels were more in line with the center of motor. We kids weren't allowed outside while he used it. Threw debris everywhere.

That mower mod is very similar to what I did to a cheap push gas mower 17-18 years ago. Only I retained the front wheels, cut a curved section away from the front of the deck to expose all the blade arc that I could and lastly added a second blade crossed 90 degrees to the first one. It helped that I heated the ends of the blades to allow hammering them dead flat and cut a saw-like tooth in the tip of each blade. Gave this evil machine the name "Ankle Biter" 😀 The mower's first job was to clear my backyard of runaway bamboo planted many years earlier by an ex neighbor. Unfortunately it was left behind when I moved. Mower was unstoppable and scared all that contemplated borrowing it. l'll have to build another...
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
I took the front wheels off so I did not have the corners of the cowling in the way to get into the swath area. I put skids on the sides to hold it off the ground.
@GFTP1007 жыл бұрын
That's a good way to widen the effective cut area. I wanted more of a gliding-rolling action even if it meant a narrow swath. I had no regrets. That original minibushhog is long gone and I have the need to make another. Did you ever see Sears' super mower-like string trimmer? It's a kinder, gentler version of what we created and used 1/8" trimmer line. Totally worthless as the line almost instantly disintegrated. I replaced the string holder disc with two 18" crossed mower blades and was able to cut small trees down with it! But it's a weak mechanism and I finally killed it. Time for "Ankle Biter V2" lol

I was looking at buying a bush-hog type mower just a few says ago. Found one for $1750 - still too much. I ended up buying a walk behind brush mower, similar to a weed-wacker with rear wheels at home depot. It was on sale from $300 to $279. I bought it, unpacked it, and found it was used once and returned. I complained to the manager on the phone and he refunded me $50, so I got it for $229. I'm satisfied - it does a nice job cutting down overgrown weeds, but your modified mower is awesome. At some point I just may make one of those too.

Dad made one like this when I was ten, he put a front wheel out front by welding some angle iron that came up from the deck and back down to the wheel. My brother and I cut long grass for our steer we raised. we also went around Montrose CO and cut corn stalks down for those steers we raised, which freaked out my older sister because yes she had to help, think it left permanent damage on her and made me want to be real cheap, free animal fodder. the steer would stand out there and eat those corn stalks from one end to the other. we always tried to cut them just after the people picked the corn, more juice in the plants.

With a top guard, maybe a hoop over the edge of the blade, it would stop a collision with a pole or object, and the tougher bushes would bend slightly before encountering the blade. I have a bush cutter on a three-point hitch and it works great, except that the tractor tires crush the vegetation before cutting, so the cutter does not do an awesome job on first pass. Often, if I am quite confident there are no rocks or obstacles, I will back into the brush. This is especially helpful under large tree branches. I do need a smaller brush cutter, so will hack a mower too.

In the early 80s I rented something similar to this but with a larger motor and 3' blade on it, the blade was open at the front too and just protected by a tube frame around the rear. Didn't realize how dangerous this thing could be untill it hit a stone hidden in the grass, flinging it trough a window almost at the other end of the street. This thing which looked like a homebuilt contraption could be rented from a then already big and well known rental company! Luckily it didn't hit a steel angle that was driven in the ground and hidden in the same patch of grass and weed, things could have been ugly then, the same steel angle however riped open my shoe and toe when I stumbled over it, I didn't have steel cap boots on. The advice I can give about this is wearing safety boots and check the area for loose objects like stones, pieces of wood or metal and hard objects in the ground that could break the blades or throw the mower over, then it will be reasonable safe to use this machine.

In the late 60s there were 3 wheel gas trimmers. I used to use one in a cemetery. they had a partially exposed blade but with a guard that would pull the tall grass into the blade. They were not as dangerous as what you had but when I used to have to use them on a hill with a very steep grade, I knew it would have been easy to take off a foot or hand if you slipped. I didn't mind on flat ground but on any hill it was very scary.
