Mobile Fidelity founder Brad Miller was a steam train enthusiast. The name Mobile Fidelity comes from the fact that they originally released records of (mobile) trains.

Living close to MFSL (Sebastopol) in the 70"s and 80's a local record store (PREZ Records) was kind of the dumping ground for test pressings from Mobile Fidelity. He would put them in the $1 bin ($2 for Beatle TP's). I didn't care about the white covers, I only wanted for the music, so I bought as many as I could. Included a lot of Un-Released Titles. Most of these were lost in 2017 fire

Mofi records used to be pressed by JVC in Japan. After JVC stopped pressing records, Mofi started using RTI. Brad Miller's forte was sound effects and trains. He did a quadraphonic album about the Freedom Train featuring the Southern Pacific #4449 Lima steam locomotive, which was the main locomotive which pulled the Freedom Train all over the U.S.

What was often MoFi's reason for cancelling releases? Obviously there have been many releases across many labels that didn't make it past the test pressing stage. But since MoFi was remastering tried-and-true titles, I would imagine they already knew what would be a seller before licensing it. Would the license agreements fall through? Or did they hear the test pressings and realize their process didn't suit the given recording?

Out of interest, why would there be testing pressings of albums not released on MoFi? It just seems a lot of work to get the tapes, cut the lacquers, produce the stampers, deliver test pressings… and then never see the light of day? Surely MoFi wouldn’t do all of that work without contracts in place?
