There's a creature in Slavic Mythology name Kłobuk that was misscarried dead child, and if you fed it it would help you get rich by stealing stuff from your neighbours. In egypth there was Ammit which is one of the most akward Gryphon spinnoff to exists. USA has Squonk as embodiment of depression. End the list goes on, and on. Every Mythology had some wierd stuff in it... Japanese just had a bit more...

This inspired me to do my own research. There really doesn't seem to be much out there about this creature, and from what I have been able to find, this is apparently the old Japanese folks' idea of humor. In fact, based on what I've read, I'm inclined to speculate that this creature must be based on some kind of wordplay. In regular usage, "shirime" basically means to side-eye someone, but the kanji for it literally means "bottom eye". So I guess someone way back in the day realized "this word is really silly when you think about it. It sounds like a creature with an eye in its butt, and... wait a second, this is too funny. I _need_ to draw this!"
