Crazy Neighbor Loses it & Calls the building Inspector 5 times!

The neighbor loses it over a drainage question. Goes off on Blaine & calls the building inspector 5 times!

I was on a job site once working for my dad. We'd been working for 4 days and this woman next door called the police 43 times making noise complaints and claiming we were throwing crap in her yard (we were not) and making stuff up and trying to desperately get us to stop. Finally she made a claim that I assaulted her, she even had a cut on her face to "prove it". Fortunately the home owner had a camera and had filmed us the entire time we were there. I was on camera at the time she claimed the assault took place and she was not. Imagine her surprise when *SHE* got arrested. Turned out the contractee had been having issues with this woman for years. It was why he had the camera set up. He wanted to make sure she couldn't make any false claims.

At least you guys are respectful of lawns. We came back from being out of town to dead patches of grass, ruts and a broken sprinkler head from a contractor that put up our neighbors fence. I asked them to pay for the sprinkler head repair and the company owner told me kick rocks. I sued for cost of the sprinkler and the to have my lawn repaired after that. Won that and lawyer fees.

I do and the neighbor does have some valid complaints. First they destroyed her grass. My crew would resod, not leave packed down sod. If water mitigation was as much of a concern as he said I wouldn't drain the water out the wall for it to just undermine the wall again. I would drain it out at the sidewalk.

Same here. I build decks and we start around 830 or 9 weekdays. The last job the neighbor lady literally called the cops, city council, permits office, and county inspectors within 20 minutes of us being there. They all came, and here comes crazy lady swinging random papers around talking nonsense and one of the cops finally goes "maam are you going to let these guys work or are we going to take you to jail?" She went in the house and never came out again, but stared at us with what i can only describe as a maniacal serial murderer taking a good look at her next victims. I really despise people like that

I had a construction crew who claimed my 85 year old mother told him he could dump a pile of dirt 4 feet high, 10 feet square on her property during a plumbing excavation. She didn't. Then, he destroyed her yard trying to fill it back in with his backhoe. Didn't even try to apologize or fix the problem. Just threw some grass seed on the mud pit he created and said "Take me to small claims court if don't like it". She never did of course, but she had to buy 2,000 dollars worth of sod put in to fix it. You guys did an amazing job of keeping her yard clean.

Well, my sister took care of it, after yelling at me to not go to small claims court. Not sure an elder services would have stepped into this considering it was a civil case, not criminal. After two weeks of arguing with the company, my sister gave up and realized a mud pit wasn't serving us any value. She then had my mom pay $2,000 for premium sod and a company to install it.

I came back 2 days later and the contractor (who Ilater found out was also the owner) tried to steal 5 feet of my property and started building a wall. The repairs are going to cost me $40,000. Right after creating the mess he abandoned the property and the city has been in litigation with him for 15 years.

lol mood... sadly, there are usually local ordinances regarding the maximum height of a fence. The good news, however, is that anti-harassment laws exist. What a lot of people who have never worked in trades don't understand is that, a lot of very smart people get into the business because they don't fit the higher education model straight out of high school. Some, like myself, wasted their secondary education by being f**k ups and only got their s**t together after a few years of being useless. But the one thing I have taken away from 17 years in trades is, just because a man doesn't have a PHD, MD, QC or HON in front of their name. Doesn't mean they can't be the most intelligent and professional person in a room. I have met engineers who couldn't understand trade level math, sociology graduates that don't understand basic human nature and project managers that suggest the dumbest ideas to fix problems (while rejecting my common sense, quick and cheap solutions). Not to mention, I made a lot more money than some expensively educated university graduates and I didn't have to pay for my education, I was paid the whole time I was learning. Sorry for the long winded reply, but thankyou for recognising the professionalism that many refuse to acknowledge. Also, make friends with a tradie and ask for a few lessons in tradecraft, we love to teach as much as we love learning new stuff.

I was a code enforcement officer for 20 years. Drainage issues between neighbors were the worst cases to work. Don't ever buy a house at the bottom of an inclined street! Water flows downhill, duh!

Yep, I bought the one on top of the hill. Idiots built brand new houses behind all my neighbors’ properties and next to water company land behind me. They have to drain their water tanks and inspect them every year or so. Tried to warn them about the possibility of flooding for yard and even slab houses…. Still bought and like idiots. Dont blame us when all of our rain and the water company’s drainage flood you out and insurance wont cover it!

@@Egleu1 properties should be designed so that the majority of water flows to the front so it can go down the curb line. So you're correct. If you build something that directs water onto a neighboring property, you're at fault & liable. Also, you must provide a backwashing method for a pool that doesn't allow the water onto another's property.

It doesn't matter. It's an easement. Meaning you can cross over on their land without permission from the land owner to fulfill a task that's only accessible by going on their property. It's 100% a law.

I think most of the problems come from lack of consultation and communication. I've had builders turn up without warning at 8am on a Easter holiday weekend and use a mechanical digger to excavate next to the foundation of our garage for a swimming pool, potentially destabalising the structure and as I later discovered, in contravention of the English 1996 Party Wall Act. The neigbour who had bought the property hadn't even the courtesy to introduce himself and let us know this work was planned. And people wonder why these sorts of tensions arise.

Had the same problem with my neighbour while putting in a retaining wall. She was on the downside of the hill from my property and I discovered she had dug an illegal drain system that was dumping all her drain water at the base of my retaining wall of another neighbour. I later discovered that she has levelled off all her property without building ANY retaining walls after doing so, which forced all her neighbours to have to build their own retaining walls. Last laugh is on her though because now her place is like a swimming pool when it rains as she has no place to allow the water to flow downhill. As was aptly mentioned in this video, you can fight your neighbours but not the laws of gravity.

I was on a job where the contractor poured the grade beams and footings two foot by two foot. This woman inspector comes out trying to tell him that the plans call for eighteen inch by eighteen inch footings so he needs to tear out all his work and make them smaller. She had the construction experience of a cheerleader so he had to explain to her, very slowly, that the eighteen inch was the minimum and his work was just fine.

So, I've worked in an office like this, generally what's happened is she kicked it up the chain and someone came down on the inspector and forced them to head out. These kinds of calls come in all the time and they know who the complainers are and who the actual issues are, and complainers usually get ignored because they waste so much time if you do engage them. Callers who are complainers will often lie though, and call the police or elected officials, who will then kind of force the issue and make the inspector go out just to show that they were there and be done with it. Once had a woman lie that her house was being actively damaged and siding was being ripped off to get an inspector out. Workers weren't even on site that day, she was just an old crank.

Your saving grace is the county limits. I"m in the county but across the street from city limits. Last lot on a dead end street that has never been developed, been that way for decades, i'm talking 1950's. Every year i get a call to maintain my "lawn" There is no house or a structure, mainly the lady wants to use my yard as part of hers since i'm not doing anything with mine. I know property line inspections are not part of a new home buying process, but i would encourage anyone reading this to spend the money ($1-2k) to get it done even on a residential lot. That first owner who built his home, how certain are you about his fence lines. No fences, no problem, who's shrubs are at the edge of the property?

That drain issue reminds me of a problem my friend had. He bought a house and the first big rain storm water was pouring into his supposedly dry basement, and the sump pump couldn't keep up. He was frantic. My friend and I took a look, just to see if we could spot any 'derp' things. The previous owner had installed a long fence running along the front of the lawn, and when they did it, they had moved the hose the sump pump was pumping through, and coiled it up right near the house. It was just pumping right back against the foundation. We grabbed the end of the hose and walked it out to far end of the fence. The pump didn't survive long after that, but he didn't have any water problems after that, and actually finished the basement later.

I like how he says "Red Flags." Such a spot on way to assess the situation. We have red flags in our new construction home regarding the new neighbors who bought next door after we did. We found buried 4 inch plastic corrugated perforated pipe running 25 feet and 60 feet onto our land from their land probably installed by the previous next door neighbor when they built their home 11 years ago (thinking the adjacent lot is vacant and no one will know as we have woods and stream). Our property boundary is 90 to 100 feet from their home and their home is all uphill from the lot line. When asked if they'd mind relocating them onto their land they claimed to not know about them and then avoided a solid commitment to move them (a 15 minute job really). Then we offered them a permission letter which would just protect us from adverse claims and they said "no we're not comfortable with that." Called in a drainage guy and asked them if they'd mind me moving them right now and drainage guy told them there is no value to having your drainage solutions on someone else's property. They had no real option but to consent. I paid to have pop ups installed on their land. All fenced in now.

We had an old retaining wall collapse due to a neighbors downspouts being diverted to the property line through a non permitted French drain they installed. Our contractor hired an architect, and structural engineer who drew up plans to submit to the building permits department for a building permit. The permit was approved. Our contractor started demolition, and the neighbor called the building permits department on the first day of work. They tried to issue a ceast or decist order, but it failed when the neighbor was told there were plans, and a valid permit. The wall was completed, and the neighbor passed away a short time later. With a permit, and approved plans, there is nothing a complainer can do to stop you. When you own the property, you can do what you want inside your property line, and a permit helps you.

Had a crazy neighbor at the lake go loco on me (they wanted me to sell out), all in my face, telling me what I owned and didn't, what i could and couldn't do with my property......tried like hell to intimidate me. He lived there full time, I like most of my other neighbors, am there there a weekend or two a month. I ignored him, but he told neighbors, who I mostly don't know, about things I didn't do, lied to them about where my property lines were, put t-post on my property and told them those were my property corners, total nut job. The funny thing about him "educating me" is that I own an architecture firm.....I just let him go on and on......welcome to my sandbox, this is what I do for a living! He called the county commissioner on me, the USPS (apparently he felt my mail box was a hazard), reported me to the Sheriff for removing the t-post he illegally placed on my property....apparently he felt that I stole them......Sheriff wasn't amused with him. One of his "you can't do things" was build a retaining wall in my front yard.....so what did I do, hired someone to build a 10' tall retaining wall......When we got started, the Corp of Engineers showed up after an "anonymous phone call that I was building on their property".......I showed the Corp guy all of the documents of record at the court house, since the lot was platted, my signed survey, the title opinion from my real-estate attorney and the engineered drawings for the wall.....all of which I had handy, because guess what I thought would happen lol! The Corp guy just said thanks, you are free to move forward, and shook his head. He shook my hand as the "neighbor" watched, from his hiding spot behind his bushes. I enjoyed that look of defeat, after 2 years of putting up with his B.S. He doesn't talk to me anymore, which is a nice bonus lol.

I love how you emphasized the gentle digging with the excavator siding the future dip potential. I hate seeing guys take big deep scoops and thinking that the bucket of an excavator can compact backfill and it won't be an issue later. I've seen things settle within just a couple of years and make things complicated. People tease me about being surgical with a loader bucket but that little bit of extra time goes a long way towards future integrity. And I think when guys work really fast to show off it looks more sloppy.

That's exactly what happened here, the homeowners association built the fence due to my antics after I learned that neighbor came into my house, it's a long story short a big white 10 ft vinyl fence was put up, and I guess they told the contractor lead man about me and my reputation, but he came at me really nice and professional and understanding and even at me some materials so I can get my start of the yard ready, the job was done good and it looks good and both sides are happy, but had it been there in the first place it would have prevented a lot of problems

Everyone can see you're yard and anything you do in it. and guess what? nobody cares. people do their lives and go about their business, its all good. despite the neighbors all so close, i'd never want a giant ugly fence. it ruins the cohesion and line of sight around the yard. i like being able to see lawns and greenery.

One guy here put in sprinklers in his front yard, and half the strip between his house and the neighbor's, presumably his side. He paid for everything and connected the side sprinklers to his house so he'd be paying the water bill on that side too. His neighbor came out and threw a fit, ended up going to court, which sided with the second guy. That one paid to have 6-8 inches of red concrete poured over the whole strip between the houses. It was too narrow and high with a sharp drop off to even be used as a second driveway or anything. The street end was a regular curb, so no way to easily run anything up there, either. Both guys have passed now, and the wives are friends, one of them told me the story. Everytime I pass that house I shake my head.

This whole story reminded me of my one neighbor. We moved into our house about 5 years ago and there was a 6 ft. wooden fence separating our backyards. The fence was probably 15-20 years old. After that many years of Wyoming snow the fence was rotting and leaning towards our yard. One day when we weren’t home she came into our backyard and propped up the fence with 2x2 pieces of lumber. We didn’t know where they came from so we removed them so we could mow and not have to maneuver around them. Well Wyoming isn’t only known for its snow but also for its WIND.🌬 Low and behold a good wind came through and down went the fence. She was so mad that we took down the 2x2’s that were on OUR property. The fence was actually on her property but we told her we would go halves with her to replace what fell. She decided to just replace the posts and reuse the rotten sections that fell. This happened about 2 years ago and she’s been cold toward us ever since. All we can do is continue to try to be good neighbors.

We have a neighbor who calls the building inspector on us constantly. The inspector comes and says he is here for th same bs as usual. Whats funny is we mentioned to the inspector that neighbor built an apartment in his basement illegally, the inspector went up there and fined the guy $5,000. What's even funnier is my mom worked with this inspector before he was an town inspector for 10 years, I worked with him and his brother for 7 years.

this exact thing happened when I was helping my parents repave their driveway, entire property was raised by about 5 feet from the neighbors house, and the 50 year old railway tie retaining wall wasn't holding up the gravel driveway anymore. So my parents ripped up their entire driveway and installed a concrete retaining wall BEHIND the fence so no one had to look at the 40 concrete blocks holding the property back. And of course shitbird is calling bylaw officers and harassing the paving crew because he doesn't like that the yard and house drain beside the new driveway and blamed my parents for his flooding issues. He thought (wrongly and had been told before) that the dirt triangle between our properties and the road (corner houses) belonged to him and that we were not allowed to run drainage there. Fun fact that triangle, his fence and about 1/2 of his garden were actually on my parents property according to the city inspector, also his house would flood because his sump was pumping into his backyard UP THE HILL.

As a landscape contractor myself, I almost always (if the next door homeowner is available) go to the home next door to discuss the project, ask if they agree on the property lines, ask if they have any questions or concerns and usually receive their blessings nearly 90 percent of the time without issue. Sometimes there are discussions about what he said/she said on neighboring disputes but we try to work through all the bugs. Needless to say, we don’t get these issues as you see here. Our system may not be perfect but works fairly well.

Forgot to add - when we do approach the adjacent homeowners, we discuss all their issues too and try to find solutions for their property so they feel connected to our landscaping project and we often get a project next door to help out their situation. It’s a win win for most folks.

With an ethic like that, I bet you probably end up with a second job on the spot as the neighbor sees problems in the area being worked that could best be addressed at the same time rather than come in and do later. If there are remaining issues after a project is completed on a singular project, then another potential conflict(s) can easily be a problem for the neighbor or even neighbors. Here’s one example of what I am sharing with folks today. In a Plymouth, MN neighborhood, a landscape client of ours had backyard water issues with little space for water to go in the slight drainage ditch that the excavation company had dug out for 5 adjacent backyards. Being solid clay back there, with no place for the heavy rain water to go due to overgrowth in that drainage area, we proposed a drainage solution for those 5 properties in a shared cost scenario that make the project fairly inexpensive for all involved. About three homeowners went in on the cost of the drainage project and two did not even though they benefited from the installation that went all the way towards the main drain for that area. With everyone’s blessings, we got rid of the overgrowth that hindered the draintile installation and the extremely slow traveling surface water during heavy rains. After following up on the installation and a few rain storms later, the homeowner that originally contracted with us said everything was working well.

I used to do tree work (removal, trimming, etc.) in TN many years ago, and I feel for these guys and everyone that tries to IMPROVE dangerous conditions. It seems that there is always someone that can't tolerate anyone else doing anything at all in their "space". They enjoy their tense emotional climate, I suppose, since it allows them to feel something, albeit rage and fruitless whining. @@Dirtmonkey higher property value means higher taxes. Plus it makes the nicer hubris place looker better then hers. Also there might be a pre existing beef between them.

Enjoyed the video, loved the retaining wall. I am also a landscape architect and own a landscape construction company for over 35 years. Anytime I am working on a property line, with the customers blessing, I always go talk with the neighbors and explain what I plan to do and why it would be better for them too. This retaining wall definitely improved the look and the drainage. I would of discussed why the neighbor is having drainage issues like you pointed out in the video. You would of had a happy neighbor, happy customer and a possible corrective drainage project in the neighbors yard. Last but not least, they did walk in her yard a lot and left some dirt behind. I would of raked that dirt up and spread some grass seed.

They were walking in her yard a lot, i noticed that as well. It would be hard not to do it some it even the camera was set up fairly far in there during several shots.

I really don’t think they will ever be happy neighbours . She was determined to put the blame on them , and her mind was closed nobody made a dent on her point of view.

The neighbour didn't take advantage of the situation at all. Contractors who know a thing or two about drainage and she's having water run off issues? Be nice to the contractors and ask for advice. Also, the grass will grow back in no time, let them use the digger on it. Also, easier access to the job site means the job gets done quicker which means less noise in the long run. You get a free wall that the home owner doesn't even get to see. You property value went up a little. So many positives and she's Mrs Grumpy Pants.

In some towns here in Oregun, there an ordinance that the floor of a house is to be 2’ above the existing street, it’s clear that we’re you guy’s are at that houses can be built below grade , there for that nasty neighbor is receiving every body’s rain water, “ hey dummy it’s the low point”. I guess you guy’s have know rain and it’s no big deal. Looks like the city could care less, let the law suits be gain, hell yes fill up the court’s, it’s the American way.
