As I said, I’m on vacation this week, so my gain is your pain, which means, I’ll be posting more covers than usual.
Also, as I’ve said, I’ve got a ton of covers on my desktop and often struggle when selecting which one to post. So what I did was look up some info on a bunch of the songs and took note of things like - album release dates, artist birthdays, dates they passed away etc., thus taking the thought out of the selection process. What that boils down to it that a number of my future posts will have an anniversary of some sort attached to them.
That being said, today is the birthday of Ann Wilson, “lead singer, flute player, songwriter, and occasional guitar player” of the band Heart. This song, “Crazy On You” was on their album, “Dreamboat Annie” which was released in 1976 in the US…and 1975 in Canada.
Original Heart bassist, Steve Fossen played bass on this one. I think it’s a great song with a great bass line. He had a really interesting bass tone for the time and wasn’t afraid to let the bass growl a bit. It has a lazy sort of quality to it. I like bass lines that make me think, “How did he think of that?” And this bass line does that in a few spots. The chorus is interesting as it’s more a riff than a progression. I’d even go as far as saying that I think the song has some minor prog elements. What do you think of them apples?
Lynn and I saw Heart a few years back and we both thought they were fantastic. I was never a big fan of theirs but I didn’t dislike them either. Ann’s voice was fantastic - pitch perfect, strong, and powerful. Nancy was great, as was the rest of the band. I remember the bass player playing a few cool vintage looking basses. We went back to see them at a smaller venue later that year and are going to see them again this summer at Bethel Woods where they are playing with Cheap Trick.
So, Happy Birthday Ann Wilson.
I'm playing a Fender Classic 70's Precision which was a Precision bass with a Jazz bass neck to which I added a Jazz p/u in the bridge position.

Wow! I am subscribing to this alright. Videos when just one instrument is playing or a properly done cover (where the sound is clean and not muddled, and their is no talking) tend to be the best. I don't know a lot of other You tubers who consistently put up bass only songs, but this works for me!

My favorite notes in that bass line are the E flats in the verses (first appearing at 0:24). That's something a guitarist or a vocalist would just bend up there. Seeing Fossen being a pick player, I wonder if he started out on guitar.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 8 жыл бұрын
I actually did bend it the first time in the second verse but quickly reverted to the drag down approach. The part does seem ripe for bending but I think the other way sounded better...or more accurate anyway.

hello Troy, beauty as usual. The hammer there in the background looks a lot like the Morris Precision copy I rented back in 83-84 in the central valley, Dinuba Music Store. I think it was $7 a week rental. I weekly lessons, the gentleman's name was Dean Norris, doppelganger, Kenneth Clark Loggins. I began to read sheet music, then I got fired and have not played regularly since. I am a shame I did not keep going, but I got the itch again, Good lord willing, soon. Keep on Pluckin ! BTW. I like the string action, we called that "loose wobble"

Oh I knew exactly what you meant. Some people play a bit behind the beat by a milli-second. Sometimes it works, other times, not so much. You'll know for sure when you hear your playback later. Sometimes things sound great while you're laying them down and you're on fire and you're thinking..."this is gonna be awesome." But when you get in the control room and listen to the playback...it may not come across as it did while laying it down. Steve's baseline here, obviously was a "take."
@luvbasses5487
@luvbasses5487 8 жыл бұрын
Another comment to Troy here...on your thoughts of Steve Fossen. I also feel that the bass line is rather reserved too. It's funny how you said that it feels kind of lazy. Well, it is...and he doesn't call much attention to himself, which I also like. A band should not be about "HEY...look at ME and what I can do!" There is no "I" in "WE." A band is a team. This guy constructed a clever bass line that leaves everyone scratching their heads as they walk away...thinking..."wow that was cool..." Steve did his job.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 8 жыл бұрын
Ah, what I meant by "lazy" was lazy in feel - very laid back and behind the beat. I actually think it's a very interesting bass line that, as you said, suited the song perfectly.

Wow. Tough one indeed. I too had trouble hearing and choosing the right bass notes. This song is so good that it may have had even Jimmy Page walking away scratching his head thinking..."wow...we have spawned some beautiful offspring, haven't we? Good one mates." Maybe they looked at it as "cloning" but I look at it as a casebook study of a perfectly constructed rock song.

@@TJH3113 How many basses do you have? How many years have you been collecting them? Last question: do you know just from hearing a song which bass or two will fit the sound best, or do you try them out first? Thanks in advance!
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 5 жыл бұрын
@@windk100, I've almost lost count. I've been collecting around 3 years and I'm just about done. I've touched everything I've ever wanted to and now it's time to round up my favorites and send the rest on their way. Don't get me wrong, I love every bass I currently have, but some get more play time than others and I don't like having them sit idle for too long. Mostly, I will record the covers on the bass I happen to be playing at that time. Once and while, I will choose a bass for a particular song, but that is not the norm. I actually like using the most unlikely bass to do some of the covers. Often, when I get a bass back from having work done to it, or if I get a new bass, I will do a cover of whatever song is fresh in my mind...whatever the last song I was working on. That is how I wind up with the alternate takes that I post as "Unlisted" and give the links for in the section beneath the video.

Super inspiring playing as always. Thanks for doing these. It helps me get better because I pick up ideas you come up with. My ears don't always copy or pick up as well as some other people do. This is such a great bass part too. What bridge do you have on that bass? How do you feel about it? I'm bridge shopping right now and asking other players what they like. I've got a Fender Roscoe Beck V that had a stock Gotoh 206 on it. It is literally cracking and crumbling apart so I've got to replace it.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it was my pleasure and I'm glad that you find the videos helpful. The bridge is a Hipshot A Style. Badasses were hard to come by at the time, otherwise I'd have put one of those on there. There's a company that is making exact replicas of the BadAss bridge if you like that. Just search "BadAss style bass bridge." The hipshot is fine - direct replacement and it has adjustable string spacing which is a nice feature.
@jimrubelbassplayer
@jimrubelbassplayer 8 жыл бұрын
In hunting around I thought the BadAss would be the best fit. A few guys replaced their Roscoe Beck V bridges with those. However, as you say those are hard to find and I heard they aren't manufactured anymore. Hipshot doesn't make a 5 string KickAss (BadAss semi-copy) yet nor does Omega. I'm probably going with the Hipshot style A 5 string. It makes the most sense but I will have some holes exposed because there is no exact replacement for the old bridge on the RBV. At this point I'm into function over aesthetics. I tried to adjust my B string again yesterday and another piece of the original bridge cracked. I was not being heavy handed with the screws either. Piece of the saddle still snapped. Thanks for you suggestion and help.

Haunting bass! I love it! Troy What do you think about the bass line in the classic Nights in White Satin by Moody Blues? I am wild about it. :-)

Thanks. Funny you should mention that. I started on "Heaven On Their Minds" a few weeks ago and have been picking it up and putting it down. I think I'll eventually see it through though. Just not looking forward to some of the ad-lib stuff at the end.
