Crazy Plant Growth - Paludarium Ecosphere 16 Month Update

  Рет қаралды 34,300

Life in Jars?

Life in Jars?

3 жыл бұрын

The closed paludarium ecosystem, part aquarium and part aquarium, is 16 months old now. Time for an update! The creeping charlie has grown all throughout the ecosphere, the spider plants are doing well and new plants like duckweed and grass are growing. The aquatic isopods are doing great and there's a nice big springtail colony.
Enjoy!

Aquatic isopods are often considered a keystone species in an environment, and can be hard to care for in captivity. If they're doing this well, you definitely set up that tank amazingly. Good to see. (Sincerely casual isopod keeper)
@bhutwheyttherismor86
@bhutwheyttherismor86 3 жыл бұрын
To clarify how crazy this is, it's the first time I've seen someone get them to live and breed in an environment without artificial water stimulation. (Moving water)
@ambroznesvar6606
@ambroznesvar6606 3 жыл бұрын
Asellus aquaticus live usually in stagnant dirty water with low oxygen levels, eating anything. What can be notoriously hard about their care? I think you confuse this with another type of crustaceans?
@bhutwheyttherismor86
@bhutwheyttherismor86 3 жыл бұрын
@@ambroznesvar6606 They also frequently live in creeks and lakes with higher oxygen counts. The oxygen isn't what I'm worried about however. Caring for anything in still water without chemical treatment is hard because of foreign things getting in. This environment is contained however so it's not something he has to worry about. I've tried to keep them and so have a few hobbyist friends. Without moving water and frequent changes of water with the appropriate bacteria, algae, and such they usually die off in days to weeks. They seem simple but require a lot of balance.
@ambroznesvar6606
@ambroznesvar6606 3 жыл бұрын
@@bhutwheyttherismor86 Anything but notoriously hard. I know someone who hlave a lot of them in 12l no tech tank for 2 years without any real care. No added chemicals or anything. They need only lots of plants. Less hardy than miniature seedshrimps, but definitely easier than red cherrys. If you take them from oxygenated water and just throw them into different and uncycled water, without adequate food, they will probably die from shock over weeks. Acclimatize them slowly by drip method to your heavily planted jar, take some food from their habitat, check out if there are any predators, avoid drastic changes and do not leave them in too much sun. Also, they love limestone, dry reed and poplar leaves. I still think you and people who liked your comment confuse asellus with gammarus. :D
@bhutwheyttherismor86
@bhutwheyttherismor86 3 жыл бұрын
@@ambroznesvar6606 I can't speak for my fellow hobbyist as they're online and in many different areas. In my area however only Asellus spp. and Caecidotea spp. are known to inhabit our creeks. It may be that we're all not very good at it, as we all keep terrestrial isopods as our main hobby. Maybe one day I will try again and attempt to acclimate slower and increase the oxygen producers in the tank. At the moment for me though this is a first, I've always see them in tanks with a similar setup to antscanadas's river tank. (Which I had also considered thanks to his idea of keeping the bacteria alive in the filter area so more readily available water could be used). I very much appreciate the info and I hope others who seem to have had similar struggles may try your techniques as well for their Asellus.

I got inspired by your videos and got an air tight jar from Walmart almost 8 months ago. I pulled some dirt and water from a stream not far from where I live. It didn’t do anything for close to 6 months. I thought that I had a jar of dirt and nothing more. I checked it one day in December and it was full of green moss and even the stem of a young plant!

Spider plants are freaking amazing they can tolerate to too much and too little light, high humidity, waterlogged soil, survive droughts thanks to their tuber like roots that store water, hell they don't even need soil i had one for over a year in a glass with a bit of water and they reproduce like crazy by sending out runners.

I had one survive a year at college with me. It was in a large pot set in front of a north facing window and fed a steady diet of old coffee, tea, and the occasional cup of water. Apparently that was enough because the spider plant colonized the plant we put next to it and even found a crack in the window seal to make a grand escape to the outside.

While rewatching other videos I was wondering if it would be helpful to throw a magnet with a piece of cloth attached on one side in closed ecosystems so then you can use another one on the outside of the glass to move it up and down a bit to create a little peak hole in the alge? It may need to be wrapped in plastic, and maybe the glass is too thick, but that's how I clean out "vases" when I can't access the inside easily.
