There's a squad of corvids who greet me with a particular sequence of caws wherever I go within an approximately 2km radius of my home. I believe they are crows, but they might be ravens; I don't know the difference. I didn't intentionally set out to befriend them, and to be honest, I'm not sure what it is about me that originally attracted their attention, but there is something reassuring about being recognized in an urban area where people are somewhat reluctant and inattentive to strangers. My well-meaning gesture of leaving small food items met with mixed results until a friend of mine told me about unsalted peanuts. At first, I didn't understand because for some reason in my country people use the words "shelled" and "unshelled" to mean the same thing, and I thought the crows would appreciate not having to peel the peanuts. But in fact the opposite seems to be true, at least with these particular crows. They responded very enthusiastically to small gifts of peanuts still in the shell-they seem to enjoy "unwrapping" them, as if the shell were keeping the nuts inside fresh, the way we do with candy wrappers and the like.

I wonder if it would be different if it were an open environment (no top). It would be cool to measure the CO2 & O2 levels to see if these are correlated with a decrease in diversity. Also water PH.

Feeding the crows is good, doing it at a specific time works far better however.

When I was in junior school in the early 70's we did a similar thing with seawater & assorted sea life in a big fish tank .. after a month it was a cloudy green septic mess & stunk the glassroom out 🤮

When I start a fish tank I do stuff like this. Go to the wild and grab some soil, rocks and plants. Especially duck weed. Helps the biodiversity which helps the niche needs all get filled.

Makes me want to do a salt aquarium and stock it with only critters I find locally while scuba diving. The little crab was the coolest. RIP little crab.

Minification can also be an evolutionary effect. In this environment smaller individuals may have a higher chance to survive.

The "egel" in "bloedegel" does not mean "hedgehog". The Dutch word "egel" can be a hedgehog, but also a synonym for "bloedzuiger", which is a leech. In German the difference is clearer: "Igel" for hedgehog and "Egel" for leech.

Only humans find it of interest and worth sustained effort and purpose to build something more than opportunistic or parasitic relationships with other species. That is quite interesting. What with me being a human, and all.

Is it assumed that most or all the early microbe action was from the dried residue, or could some have come in on the air? They were uncovered, I believe.
