Life in Jars?

Life in Jars?

3 жыл бұрын

The natural ecosphere and the planted ecosphere are now both over three years old! In this update video we take a look at how these closed self sufficient ecosystems are doing after all this time. This is also the 100th Life in Jars? video, so we take a little look at the history of this channel.
Enjoy!

Awesome dude, I think my ecospheres are nearly 3 years old as well! They're still holdinh up greatly. Both have very varying populations of animals and plants. One of which has a population of snails which has been holding up well over the years. They vary in size depending on temperature and food accessibility (which also varies seasonally). Take into account that these ecospheres aren't even pointed into the direction of the sun!

I made my first ecosphere last year because of your channel. From the back yard the day after the first bad winter storm to hit our area. I used rocks, melted snow, some desiccated succulent soil mix from dead succulent props, charcoal and half-burned sticks from the firepit, a piece of bark from a tree branch that came down in an autumn storm that had living lichen on it, some dirty pebbles, 1/3rd an almond shell from the backyard and some muddy puddle water where the dogs like to drink. I left it unlidded for two weeks, trying to keep some of the biggest stick above water with the bark propped on it so the lichen could grow. That didn't work, the bark fell in. I then topped it up to the original watermark with fresh, room-temp snowmelt and closed it. I do turn it around every other week to look at the whole thing. It had been showing evidence of brownish growths on glass since week 2-3 and in January i noticed a clear, almost gelatinous mass extending from a floating piece of wood. Early last week the mass around the floating stick looked brown and now the glass-growths and the mass around the stick look distinctly green and have air bubbles trapped in them. WE HAVE OXYGEN PRODUCTION!!! WE HAVE LIFE!!!!!

I just made my first ecosphere today! From the wash where all the smelly street runoff and garbage collects... It was hard to find many interesting plants and animals at the time, but it looks cool now. Tubifex worms, leeches, a snail, a couple tiny things I can't identify, and scuds. One species of some grass, another plant I don't know how to identify, and a couple pieces of duckweed. Fingers crossed that it doesn't all die and just turn into a cloud of algae!
