The Mississippi is VERY large and wide down in lower Louisiana by the delta. Large container ships and barges have to go through there. That’s why the bridges down in that vicinity have to be tall and long!

I nominate the canopener bridge over Gregson St. in Durham, NC. Now *that's* a dangerous bridge... if you're driving a high-profile vehicle and take no notice of the multiple warnings that you're too tall to fit under this particular bridge. SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH, followed by the Drive of Shame to the truck rental company or your employer to explain that you're an idiot.

this is in an area called Cancer Alley. a youtuber by the name of Tyler Olivera did a documentary about it and why its called that and it's really interesting (not surprising hint: it has something to do with the oil refinieries)
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 3 ай бұрын
The cancer alley reputation is actually a myth. The facts I’m about to post comes from the Cancer Registry that tracks ALL Louisiana cancer cases. I understand that the registry is a public record. 0:02 There are no more cases of cancer in South Louisiana than there are nation wide per 100,000 population. There are more deaths. Mostly due to a very large uneducated, poor population, with diets that are conducive to causing cancer. Also a large portion of that population does not have medical insurance. When symptoms begin occurring they don’t seek any medical attention? When they do seek medical attention a vast majority are already in late stage 3 or stage 4. At this point there is not much that can be done to cure the cancer.
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 3 ай бұрын
Information from the cancer registry for Louisiana shows there are no more incidents of cancer than there are nationwide per 100,000 population. There are more deaths due to the reluctance of a large part of the Louisiana population not seeking medical attention with the onset of symptoms. When they do seek medical attention they are usually in late stage 3 or 4 with very little chance of a cure.

Here are a few more Bridges to consider ; The Eugene Talmadge Bridge over the Savannah River in Georgia. The Commodore Barry Bridge over the Delaware River and the Royal Gorge Bridge over the Arkansas River in Canon City, Colorado. By the way, the Royal Gorge Bridge held the world record as the highest suspension bridge until a bridge over in Asia surpassed it.

For those of challenged by steep, high, narrow-laned bridges, I'd probably travel at 50 MPH in slow lane with slow vehicle blinker lights on. It would take me about 2 minutes to go over it, I would count each second!

Too bad you never got to experience the joy (and terror) of driving over the Huey P. Long bridge! That bridge you're driving across is the Sunshine Bridge built in 1963 under the administration of Governor Jimmy Davis. At the time it was built, it was considered to be a "bridge to nowhere" because the road didn't connect to any major roads on the East bank of the river until after the bridge was completed. It was considered to be a political boondoggle by many in Louisiana!

@@user-rz8bu6vl8x If you're driving in South Louisiana, avoiding bridges over water will get you no where pretty quick! Try driving over the Huey P Long while a train was going across at the same time! Another favorite is the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles across the Calcasieu River.

Look at it now. A very important bridge over the Mighty Mississippi River. The Lutcher / Gramacy bridge was also, “a bridge to no where” until it got connected the other highways.
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 3 ай бұрын
Since 2013 the Huey P. Long Bridge is now a very wide bridge. If you think it is ruff driving the HPL before it was widened with a train going over it, you would not believe how it felt to be parked in a train on the bridge just outside of the super structure with 18 wheelers goin by. It feels just like being in an earthquake. Much worse than driving over it with a train going by. I retired before the bridge was widened so I don’t know if it still feels the same. But I’m guessing since the highway is now on its own superstructure it would be more stable and less shaky. The highway was just hung on the side of the railway bridge. The original bridge design was just for trains.
