This just shows how great of an actor Steve Carrell is. He masters comedy, vulnerability and emotion at the same time, and turns it all into lovely moments. Not many actors can do that.

he's smirking because he's the one character in the whole movie who desperately believed in true love. when his parents broke up, he still fought for them to come back together. later on, during the fight scene, he's heartbroken, and then doubts everything he's ever believed about love. and finally in this one amazing scene, he sees his parents laugh together, and it gives him hope. it shows him what he believed about love was true

This is the movie my high school sweetheart and I saw when she graduated in 2011. we’ve been together 8 years going on 9 now trying to save up for a home and a family currently. It’s not many times you get to step back and realize someone means so much to you. We both just watched it again and remembered what matters. Love, struggling and building a family. @@Winskl9010 Oh, well thanks for your opinion. I actually haven't seen this movie in about 11 years since I've made this comment, so I honestly don't even remember how it goes anymore, but I DO subtly remember that last scene about the ice cream. Which actually STILL touches me when I think of it to this day (although it's a bit hazy of a memory) because that one scene is separate from all of the B.S./drama/Heartbreak that occurred throughout the movie prior to that moment. If I watched it again, it would likely STILL be one of my fav Rom-Coms/"Dramadies", regardless, ngl, because of the writing 😂.

Despite the movie's funny bits, this is ultimately such a depressing story when you think about it. The wife cheated and basically ruined their marriage, scarring the kids along the way. Now they'll be stuck with this infidelity for the rest of their lives, whether they "forgive" it or not. It will never be the same. The feelings never as pure as they originally were. Such a sad movie.

@@nickmotion word! This shit shouldn’t fly.
@mchristodora Жыл бұрын
@@nickmotionYour are 100% correct the movie isn't an episode of Mickey Mouse where everything is all rainbows and sunshines all the time. The wife cheats and ruins the marriage and possibly leaves a stain on her kids and family forever. But Cal wasn't the perfect husband either, just being present isn't always enough. He stopped trying to do fun things with his wife and was just coasting along in the marriage. I concur and acknowledge that is no reason to be unfaithful to your spouse but I think this movie did a great job on capturing real life scenarios while sprinkling some humor in it which I think is extremely hard task. What also makes this ending so damn good is the fact that it feels real and authentic, look at us both taking the time out of our days to discuss/write our opinions; thats because of the vulnerability the movie expressed and that's what makes it feel so real. It leaves the outcome of there relationship in the laps of the audience's imagination by us not knowing/seeing if they ultimately get back together which leaves some people with HOPE and I think leaving people with HOPE is why so many people enjoy the ending. It gives people something to long for in a world that isn't always kind to everyone.

Late af but there is a reason I always watch this. The movie showed real love. Raw, unadulterated love. The kind of love that sends you down a dark path but some how the same love that shows you the way to a better path. Her giving the kid the pictures had nothing sexual about it. It did for him a little but ultimately it was the connection that they both had experienced in the film. He had really been hurt even though people told him he was too young to feel love and she realized in the end that even though he was 13, he really did fall in love with her in his own way. It was her acceptance of his young, puppy love that makes this scene so powerful. Of course we all know he got over his crush and she moved on with her life but this scene itself makes the point of the whole movie... that love is irrational, hurtful, vindictive, blissful, beautiful, exciting, and dark all at the same time. I love this movie.

After an infidelity takes place, I really think it’s up to the couple to decide if it’s best to end the relationship or work to fix it. Cal dated other women, but it’s obvious he was still in love with Emily and wanted to make things work.

The beauty of the movie stems from the idea that they are all lost in the beginning but they manage to rediscover the importance of love and the value of true feelings and relationships. It might be true that noone in the movie resembles you but you still might get the chance to put yourself in their position and hope that they get it right in the end. I'm not ok with cheating but people do mistakes all the time so it's not surprising or rare.

What it must feel like to have your crush jump start your adult libido like that, I can't even imagine. Must feel like a dream come true. This kid was really cool too. He owned his feelings like a boss. And what an end for the crap he's gone through, struggling with puberty, his first love, and a very upsetting parental situation. @cameronbennett81515 жыл бұрын
Okay, but even though this movie was a B, maybe a B+ movie, this ending song was so perfect. Because if you listen to the lyrics, it's about three different men. An older brother, a father, and a grandfather. You've got the youngest who's restless and needs to settle down (Ryan Gosling's character), the father who's getting a divorced and feels lost(Steve Carell's character), and the grandfather who's only loved one woman (ironically enough Robbie) and doesn't know how to live his life without her. And there's more to the song than just that, but I'm so glad I got dragged to see this movie with my friends back when it came out.

Oh my god people, lay off about the pictures. It was a simple, bittersweet ending. He knew that their age differences were so big and that there was no chance for them to be together. She simply gave him a picture to fantasize about during his high school years. There is almost no possibility they'll ever be together but she wanted to give him something that she'd never give him in real life. It was bittersweet and funny. And when he looked at his parents and smiled, it showed that he still believed in love and saw it again in his parents.

Essentially, this song seems to be a very personal insight into a family. It almost seems to be a chronicle of three generations of men in one family... The older brother is young and restless, perhaps absent and missed by his sister and others. Whilst the older father, typical of many baby boomers, is a late in life divorcee, isolated by the separation and struggling to find any peace. The grandfather, also suffers from isolation and separation, but unlike the father, and typical his generation, he has been widowed after his much loved wife died of cancer. In some ways this song details how the nature of our relationships have changed within our society over the last century. Our grandparents never really considered divorce, they committed themselves throughout their lives, a lot of baby boomers embrace divorce however, which leaves many in generations x and y (their children) in a slightly restless sort of position (like the older brother) when it comes to their own relationships. PS: I stole this from someone else but I believe it wholeheartedly and it would seem to fit pretty damn well in this final scene. The young boy is looking on at his mom and dad and able to believe in the true love that exists when two people fight FOR one another rather than fight WITH one another and immediately fall back to divorce like so many relationships do nowadays.

Cheating is and will always be the kiss of death in any relationship, even if people "move on".

that's why the rom-com ended there

It just depends. Personally it would end it for me, but some people just bounce back. They just do. People are different.

My favourite movie :) Was so surprised when I saw it at the cinema because I'll be honest I dont often relate Steve Carrell to good films but this was so brilliantly written with a brilliant twist at the end and was just so lovingly true to life in so many ways :) I'm so glad the parents didnt get back together on screen - a bit too much of a 'typical american ending' that way. Love it

Yes but it would probably be more likely that he gets in more trouble than she does because that's how it usually happens I remember when I was that age a kid got in trouble for having that stuff sent to him by a teenage girl he was dating but because he possessed it he got all the blame and was almost put on a list at 13 and I felt so sorry for the kid and the girl was just told not to do it again

Literally. So many comments defending it too but it honestly just ruined the entire movie, they didn’t need it for the plot and it was just gross that they included it.

Perfect ending scene. Robbie is so much more mature than a lot of men in their entire life will be!!!! Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Steve Carrell of course are amazing just like we're used to them :) And a beautiful song.... I could cry about all this everytime because it's just so beautiful. It makes happy just watching it.

@TheNinja94a11 ай бұрын
@@Flowerz__Yeah and she’s weird as fuck for that. If high schoolers knew she did that it would be one of the few good reasons to ostracize a kid. That shit would carry over to college, too-“she gave a thirteen year-old a physical copy of a nude when she was damn near 18”.

why the hell did they choose such a sad song for this ending? it' s so weird hearing about dying alone and cancer when you watch this
@melodyfleck9368 Жыл бұрын
I had the same reaction and came here to find out why that beautiful but really sad song at the end. After reading comments here, I think it's about how crazy and stupid love is. We all want it, but even in the most perfect form of love, there will ultimately be loss. One of the spouses will die first . . . It's a really heavy concept to lay on at the very end of a rom-com, yet it elevates the movie.
