This is my story of a substitute teacher when I was in Grade 10 20 years ago: When I was in Grade 10, my science teacher went on maternity leave. We had one teacher; an older woman named Mrs. Downey. While I gave my teachers a chance, Mrs. Downey was so abrasive that the class hated her. Even I hated her attitude. At least on one occasion, the Vice Principal was called in who told the class to mind her or there could be trouble. I personally avoided talking to her unless it was necessary. One day class started. I was dreading another day with Mrs. Downey. The class was talking. Mrs. Downey looked that she wanted to start, but the class was talking. Mrs. Downey said two words that shut everyone up: “I QUIT!” Mrs. Downey then walked out of the class. My classmates cheered. I thought “This is too good to be true”. Mrs. Downey came back into the room and glared at us. She then left without a word. The Vice Principal came in. I was thinking that we were in trouble, but he said that it wasn’t our fault and there was a conflict of interest involving Mrs. Downey. After, we got a new teacher who my class liked. I am a substitute teacher, no idea why she would take it upon herself to deviate from a teacher's plans. That is a one way ticket to their shit list, as well as the bad sub list for students. I am that sub that makes you do your work, but I also let you get away with listening to music on your phone or moving out of your assigned seat so long as you don't disrupt your classmates. However a caveat is that 5th grade and below I basically act as a full stand in for the teacher with the full lesson plans.

So one time in 4th grade… We had a substitute teacher that was an old mean lady. We have had her before and she was always mean. This time she said we can’t open the door for anyone, what so ever. So about noon, she walked out of the classroom and the door locked. She forgot the keys inside the class and she couldn’t get in. So she said let me in and us, a group of 4th graders said, “You told us to not let anyone in what so ever.” We eventually did and somehow didn’t get in trouble.

I remember this one time we had this awful substitute, she wouldn't listen to us when we told her she was teaching the wrong lesson, taught us badly, and her voice literally gave us some of us a headache (including me), I even kept the notebook where me and my friends were writing/doodling in during her lesson. It had the pictures of us dying and swords, and so many curse words, and sayings like, how we just want to get out, and how we can break the window. And halfway through the class we all collectively decided we were going to make the rest of her time here a living hell. (we were normally a fairly good class, we were the 'science and LA', class.) So about 10 minutes later and a lot of hassling later, the sub starts to scream at us so loudly that other teachers show up worried. We were all like 'help us!' to all the teachers that popped in to look at what was happening. Eventually, the principal showed up and pulled the substitute out to talk, they talked for about 10 minutes and we heard the yelling from the hall.) Eventually, the principle comes back in and apologizes to us, saying that we can sit tight until class was over. I never saw that sub again, and that class was canceled for the rest of the day.
