Marvel and DC have the same issue: the "writers" in both want to make one certain main canon character as miserably as possible and have as many evil "alternate versions" as they can get away with. For DC, that is Batman, and for Marvel, that is Spider-man. That is the ultimate in lack of appreciation, on the same level as when Vince McMahon "sacrificed the Streak" by making Taker wrestle a match he obviously wasn't healthy for.
