Both! I started surfing at Manhattan Beach Pier and El Porto in 1959 and there just weren't that many surfers so crowds were never a problem. I think after the movie "Gidget" surfing really caught on. My nickname was "moondoggie".

I don’t know if Surf localism would solve the issue because so called locals are probably the ones burning people, but I think if everyone including locals understood and had good surf ethics then everyone would have a better time and people would actually get waves to enjoy and practice. By having a I’m a local attitude you just make an excuse to be a dick, be angry, ruin the good atmosphere in the line up, be a bully, and feel like you belong in some group, it’s nice to be nice everyone is out there to have fun and enjoy been out there you know 🏄‍♂️
