What you remember is called "Wake Turbulence". It is caused by air moving around the wing tips from the high pressure area under the aircraft wings to the area of lower pressure above the wing. Due to the forwards motion of the plane this results in a sort of "horizontal tornado", which can be heard and often felt on the ground (as it moves downwards) when standing under a low flying aircraft, and can also cause turbulence endangering aircraft flying behind (and under) other aircraft. The size and strengh depends on weight and speed of the aircraft.

One interesting note about the Sully Water landing. The destination of the flight (Cactus 1549) was Charlotte International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2011, the plane was acquired in order to be put on display at the Carolina's Aviation Museum, which is located on the grounds of Charlotte International Airport. So it took a slight detour into the Hudson River and another two years but it finally made it to its destination.

My son was about 7 or 8 when he went to Spain with the family, I didn't, and the landing was rough and everyone was very concerned and of wide eyed glances and sounds. My son however was throwing his arms up whooping and hollering with joy and excitement. He loved it.

A friend of mine took me up in his plane while he was having his routine assessment which involved stuff like pulling out of a spiral dive etc, it was an awesome experience!! My wife and daughter went up with him on another occasion when the landing gear failed to drop, the runway was closed and he had to operate it manually while the plane was on autopilot, fortunately he got it down safely but my wife said she panicked when she saw the airport had deployed the fire engines etc

Aerosucre is notorious for overloading their airlines. A LOT of their planes take off using the entire runway. It's become a meme at this point.

I’m surprised after all these years that some engineers somewhere haven’t come up with a screen that stops birds or anything from being sucked into a jet engine without affecting airflow. Anyone who knows if this has been done I’d like to know about it

It's not possible to put anything in front of the engine without severely affecting air flow, not to mention, having a bird stuck to a screen in front of an engine isn't much better than having it go through the engine.

Why aren't there screens on the engine intake? Is that ignorant?

It would be hard to make a screen strong enough to stop something traveling towards the engine at the speed that they would be in flight. Also, screens affect airflow, so they would make an engine less effective, more costly, and would make them less powerful, which is often needed in emergencies. Plus, if something got stuck in the screen, it would be much worse then having it go into the engine. Engines are rated to withstand some birdstrikes and other debris. They can take a lot and still work. For every time something gets sucked into an engine and causes the engine to break, there are thousands of times either nothing major happens, or the engine is able to restart. And it's not ignorant to ask questions :)

Ww2 us had 16 1000ft carries carrying 100 planes and 3600 men also 30 fast attack carriers holding 40 to 50 carriers the amount of history BRITAIN and Europeans DON T know s unbelievabe . Seems like all they know is history of their own countries and nothing else. Thats why we get pissed when we have to pay majority of nsto dues when we are bsto. We can protect ourselves without helpi
