Use electrolysis to remove the rust. just need Arm & Hammer super soda, water, a plastic tub, and an unregulated DC 12v power supply that is around 2 amps. Line the bucket with iron (iron is best not stainless steel as the iron is the sacrifice metal) sheet and attach the negative to it. then fill tub with water mix super soda 1 cup super soda per 1 gallon water. attach positive to item and submerge in solution then turn it on and tomorrow. it will look very different the next day. Wont damage good metal and is chemically safe.

Here is an experiment for you to do. Put a 5 or 10 pound weight on the end above your magnet and let it sink into the muck. I bet you can get a lot of old finds then.
