I had IBS for five years I had to cut out gluten and dairy. I recently got diagnosed with hashimoto's disease and figured out my IBS is related to it. PLEASE get Hanna's thyroid checked out by getting a blood test to determine she doesn't have anything wrong there. I got properly medicated and now my IBS is gone. It started when I was 18 and I'm almost thirty now and am finally getting my life back. I hope this reaches you.

I’m not sure if y’all already have considered this, but a dedicated gluten free toaster might be a good choice and also any item (peanut butter, Nutella, jelly, etc) that would go on a gluten item, I would have labeled jars for gluten free so no crumbs sneak in. A peanut butter jar was how I continued to get glutened for quite a while until I realized it. I also found it helpful to follow other gluten free people on Instagram and even KZbin. It’s nice to see what they’re trying and liking. Good luck Hannah! You’re not alone. ❤

Crystal, i hope this gets to you. I have been diagnosed with a likely probable IBS myself after years and years of struggling. I later learned i had stage 4 endometriosis. IBS is commonly misdiagnosed with women who later find out it was endometriosis. It is hard because they are unable to truly diagnose it unless they have surgery, but i know they found mine on a CT scan, and ultrasounds. Just been thinking about you guys, and wanted to let you guys know! ❤️

I agree, I too have Endometriosis and because it can affect so many organs women with it generally develop IBS from it. Also gerd is another thing that she could be having as well. So I say get all the tests done. Endometriosis is not one that is easily detected as most doctors believe it has it come with symptoms from the reproductive system, but most times those aren't the first symptom they find occur and they just rule it out. I pray that all will be revail and Hannah will get the needed care.

I had stg4 endometriosis. My gyno said it was the worst case of endometriosis she had seen in her career. I ended up having surgery twice, getting two round(six months each) of Lupron Depot shots that put me into early menopause both times. I was 30 the first time I was diagnosed although as teen I always had the worst cycles. I always ended up in bed for a week. The second time I went through treatment I was 35. I am now 41. I have gone through early menopause. But my endometriosis was so bad I begged my doctor to perform a total hysterectomy on me. She didn’t, but it ended up being a partial hysterectomy. Anyways, when Hannah was dealing with all of this I really thought that she had endometriosis because her symptoms were so close to my own.

A lot of people are noting stress and anxiety as triggers and that is true, but for women, our monthly cycles also impact IBS - our hormone fluctuations can cause flare ups. A lot of women with IBS notice it gets worse on their periods, for me it’s when I’m ovulating. Good luck finding your safe foods - once you figure out everything you need to cut to avoid the gut rumblies, it gets easier to manage. Depending on what kind of IBS you have, different things will work for you so make sure to take random people’s specific advice with caution - everyone’s bodies are different and will react differently. Just pay close attention to what you’re eating and make note of what you ate when you have symptoms pop up (I like to eat the thing twice to be sure it wasn’t a one-off before I cut it out forever but that also means I often make myself miserable 🤷♀️).

I was diagnosed with IBS at Hannah's age. It's hard at first but she will find what works for her. For me dairy and salads were big triggers so I knew to avoid them...along with anything greasy. She should keep a journal of what she eats and how she feels so she knows what to eliminate. Also, a probiotic with IBS support will really help! She may also want to try Metamucil every night after dinner....that was the first thing my doctor recommended and it helped. This is something she may not have forever and it can often be triggered by mood and stress. I was lucky that I grew out of it and only have occasional episodes. Hopefully Hannah will, too!

I went through Hannah's exact journey. I have IBS but went through all the tests to find out what it was. I also Believe that when they can't find anything else wrong they just lump it under IBS. And i've Always wondered if it could be something else. The blessing was by doing all these tests they found out I had pre colon cancer that would have been full blown long before I was old enough by government standards to get a colonoscopy. Sorry she is going through this. Been there done that.

I was diagnosed with IBS when I was only 10. Later on it was discovered I had dairy and gluten allergies. Hubby also has a peanut allergy. We handle supermarkets by buying only ingredients, not prepackaged foods. You will probably have to do some meal prep, putting excess in the freezer. Baking and cooking from scratch will give you more options, taste better than prepackaged, and is more affordable.

Hannah, I would do the whole30 diet to reset your stomach and then introduce things back in one at a time to find out what affects you. You might find you don’t need to go dairy and gluten free. I found a good sourdough is totally manageable for my stomach and I’m able to eat organic pasta no problems. Nuts are a big no no for my ibs. If you do go dairy free, magnum dairy free ice creams are really good. Trader Joe’s gluten free muffins are yummy but have dairy. Someone else mentioned hashimoto’s being related, I never thought about this but I have both too and thinking about it, my ibs has been better lately. I was diagnosed with hashimoto’s about 2 years ago and it’s finally under control. Might be worth having your thyroid including the antibodies checked 😊

I got “diagnosed” (you are totally right, if the doctor can’t find anything else they call it IBS) with IBS about 10 years ago and I personally feel the symptoms really depend on stress. It’s weird, sometimes I have to eat lactose free and in the next moment I can drink a full milkshake at McDonald’s 🙈 What really helps tho is to find “safe foods” and write them down. Also try to write down every reaction to every meal you have for a while so you can actually see if Hannah can for example eat beans or gluten. And: with IBS gluten isn’t just gluten. Sometimes you can digest gluten just fine and sometimes not. And I really recommend tea. Lots and lots of tea. In Germany we have “fennel anise caraway tea” - I don’t know if it’s a thing in America but I find it really helpful with IBS. Also endometriosis might be a thing, as many women have it and the symptoms really can verify.

For me, it was crippling and so incredibly painful I would be shaking and crying. I was miserable every single day without fail for 9 months. My mental health was so low and I missed so so much school. My ibs is directly correlates with stress and anxiety for me. So I would be anxious that I was going to be anxious and cause myself extreme stomach pain. It was a vicious cycle I couldn’t break. My doctor prescribed me dicylcomine and told me it will help 50% of the pain 50% of the time 😅. Anyways, there are people who understand what you’re going through so please don’t feel alone. ❤

I've had IBS for 20 years. There's IBS-D, IBS-C, and mixed. There are triggers and everyone is different. Have Hannah keep a food journal. Trigger foods will upset her stomach almost immediately. The journal will help her figure out what her triggers are for that meal or daily. Mine are Red meat, pork, and tomatoes. Colon spasms hurt bad. Have her take ibuprofen when pain hits. Have her doctor put her on an antispasmodic and see if it helps. Definitely have her get that Colonoscopy. They can definitely diagnose IBS with it. Praying for her.

Look for a kosher section in your grocery store or find a kosher store where you will be able to find meats with no dairy in the ingredients, and also creams and other such products that are non dairy which will have the word "parve " on the container. You will have to check the ingredients for eggs....good luck!!!

I myself also have IBS. For me going in a diet really helped. But do be aware that only avoiding gluten en dairy is proppaly not enough. I’m om whats calles a FODMAP diet. This diet is especially designed for people with IBS. For example for my personally garlic and certain fruits and fructans are also a problem. With the FODMAP diet you have to figure out what works for you, by trying it out. Also stress and not having a rhythm in your food intake, so skipping meals or eating at different times everyday, can cause a lor of problems. Hopefully this advice can help you a little bit, because i know how difficult it van be especially in the beginning. Once you get used to it, it does get easier.

I have it as well and it's a struggle to eat. I was put on Linzess after years of stomach issues and it's a game changer. It helps your system to become regular to where your digesting your food and being able to pass it daily. First few days are rough but your stomach will. Thank you for it. You won't have the bloatedness the cramping filling full all the time. Just just suggestion. Hope you get to feeling better. Tons water, fruits and green vegetables to our plus I stay away from carbs as much as possible cuz those tend to back you up.

I have IBS I have not had to cut out gluten or dairy. I find the biggest thing for me is everything in moderation and no swings. So if I go high fibre, low fibre, too much sweet stuff etc all the extremes then my body reacts. Basically with IBS the muscles in your intestines seem to forget that they have to work in order like a pulse down the length. When they work out of order it causes compactions and gaps and that is what causes the pain. You do need a reasonable amount of non-soluble fibre continuously, so you could make some bran muffins and if you have not had much fibre one day have one as a snack to top us. Once I had even things out there are two things I had to bear in mind. Stress can trigger a bout for me so I need to take care of myself and try and minimise that as much as I can and then if I do have a flare up I have to cut out pork (which is a hard meat to digest) and dairy till its over plus a couple of extra days. If I do not do this it makes the episode worse and take longer to get over. Now your triggers may or may not be the same Hannah, but its a good place to start. The thing to do at the beginning is to keep eating, sometimes you just really dont feel like it. But you need to keep your digestive tract working. As my doctor said better to eat whatever you fancy for a couple of days even if its not healthy than to not eat at all. One lady she had just ate plain cookies for two straight weeks because that was all she could face. Short term this will not hurt and again better to eat something rather than nothing. Hope you work this out quickly eta after reading some of the other comments, yes keep a diary to figure things out, bear in mind time delays between eating and reaction can vary as to the food and stress level, but you will start to see trends to find out what your things are to minimise also track your menstrual cycle on it so you can figure if its hormone/cycle related which might prompt endo or pcos checks which do mimic the symptoms

Hi Chrystal, my son has had stomach issues, it was believed to be gluten so he cut all gluten, he still had the same issues, discovered it was more to do with the yeast and yeast extract, he avoids the yeast as much as possible but it is sometimes hidden and is never written in bold, he also has dairy intolerance so doesn't have dairy now either, although he can now eat gluten as long as there is no yeast extract, our bodies are strange things, good luck and healthy wishes to Hannah and all of your family xx

Aaron to Hallie's rescue, glad she was feeling a little better later. Trial and error Hannah, but I am sure you will find your way to help manage your IBS, but agree with many keep a food diary, which you can note down good foods and the ones to avoid. Blessings to you all.

Smoked salmon is yummy on a bagel, or rye bread, with cream cheese! It is also good on avocado toast. Since trying to go g.f., wrap the salmon around avocado slices, or spread avocado on corn tortilla and top w/the salmon.

I have IBS and a large hiatal hernia. Stay away from any acids. If I feel l like I can’t keep anything down, my Dr. Suggested going on a meat diet only for one week and drink only water. I also recommend ginger chews and ginger tea. Hope you get regulated soon.

My husband has been diagnosed with ibs in 2001.. he just had testing done and the VA hospital only tells him to take 12 anti diarrhea pills since 2001.. if he doesn’t take them he’s in the bathroom all day. If i eat at olive garden im sick the rest if the day. The gluten is so bad in their pasta. I hope you feel better

I'm on a gluten free diet also and would recommend learning about products that are naturally gluten free as well an find some things that she likes. That way she will have more to choose from. I feel like it gets harder if you limit yourself to the replacement stuff. When it comes to pasta, Barilla is SO much better than anything else I've tried! It's HARD in the beginning and sometimes it's just so frustrating not being able to eat what you want. But once you find things you like (and that can take time) it gets easier and you don't think about it as being a burden as much anymore.

With IBS you get flares so it can get better and then it flares and you get more sensitive. Also stress can cause more flares. I hope this helps a little !

I also was diagnosed with IBS because they couldn't find anything wrong with me. I did a gluten free/ blan diet to let my stomach heal. Then I had a day where I really wanted a certain food and didn't care how sick I got. But then I didn't get sick. Found out I just needed to balance my fiber, probiotics, and water intake.

Sometimes to figure out what is causing the issue you have to go to an all bland diet and start adding things in to see what causes it. For me, it's corn, watermelon, iceberg lettuce, and fried food. I think I am starting to get a milk sensitivity as well.

Hannah my girl!! I have struggled with tummy troubles for over 10 years now. The only thing I have found to help is a total digestive enzyme by Webber Naturals. You can get them at costco and it is for Dairy, Protein, and Carbs which cause bloating, swelling and gas. Honestly please give these a try, your mom had mentioned balancing your gut and this is exactly what it does!! I would eat 2 bites and feel full, have horrible tummy aches, severe swelling ( I would wake up and look 4 months preggy) and was vomiting on a daily basis. I went through so many scopes, biopseys, medications, ugh so much and this truly does help to balance the tummy.

I can’t have gluten, and it was rough at first. You feel like there’s nothing you can eat. But four years in, we’ve adapted so well. You can modify a lot of recipes. The eating outside of the home is what still sucks for me. You have to trust that they know the right protocols or if something is truly gf. With the omelets…an fyi that IHOP omelets are not gf. I’ve heard they put pancake mix in them to make them fluffier. I didn’t know this, and stopped there for one one morning. Within 15-20 minutes I was so sick I thought I’d have to drive myself to the ER. Never again.
