The old "strike-anywere" matches contained white phosphorus, which is extremely toxic. That's why you can't find them in stores anymore. Today, a different compound is used, which is less toxic. Nevertheless, you'll still find them only in camping stores or online.

Needs to be tested: If you strike it fast enough (with some machine or something) on water, will it ignite? At high enough speeds (like when dealing with terminal ballistics), friction has a lot more to do with density than to do with rigidity, so I actually have hope for this one. Even if water isn't porous like most solids..
