Fun fact: Lactose Intolerance is a condition that 60% of people suffer(?) from. The reason being that our body stops producing Lactase, the chemical needed to break down Lactose, once we reach a certain age. We were not meant to consume dairy products our entire lives. The condition Lactase Persistence, which allows the body to keep producing lactase, is heavily prevalent in many countries where dairy is a staple in cuisine. Thank you Brew
@derekstein6193
@derekstein6193 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the number is roughly 63% that are Lactose Intolerant, but that is based on data that is about a decade old, if I recall correctly. Lactase is actually an enzyme; calling it a chemical appears to misrepresent it as an inorganic compound instead of an organic one. The genetic mutation that allows for Lactase Persistence is believed to have originated in Scandinavia, most likely as an alternate milk source for infants and an extra food reserve in hard times. Eventually the population evolved a genetic mutation to keep producing Lactase long after infancy, instead of its normal cessation around the toddler stage of development. Lactose Intolerance is not the only dietary evolution cause by a localized genetic mutation. For instance, the majority of japanese citizens have a genetic mutation that allows them to break down particular chemical bonds in native seaweed (nori) that other humans cannot. This lets their bodies access various vitamins and minerals that other humans' bodies would just excrete along with fecal matter. Thank you for coming to my TED-Talk.
@a_d3mon
@a_d3mon 3 жыл бұрын
@@derekstein6193 All enzymes are chemicals, but not all chemicals are enzymes. If someone doesn't understand the difference they should go back to elementary/grade school... But yes that's a very valid point and I was not aware of where the mutation originated, just that it existed. Brew didn't go into a huge amount of depth as to the origins, just explained part of the reasons as to its existence and why it's significant regarding lactose intolerance... I should've put "about 60%" as that leaves more leeway than a blanket "60%"
@johnscaramis2515
@johnscaramis2515 3 жыл бұрын
Our body does not stop producing Lactase at a certain age by default. Sometimes it's a simple optimisation process: if you stop drinking milk, producing an enzyme to process milk is a waste of energy for the body. He simple stops producing it. On the other hand milk is a good source of energy, so as long as it is available, the body will use it and will not stop the production of lactase. H8wever that does not mean that happens with all people, causes for lactose intolerance vary.

Well, even with how ridiculous this "words change molecule structure" thing is, it's not like... necessarily bad? I mean... If people want to whisper something nice to their glass of water before drinking it, then why not? It doesn't have any negative effects. Maybe even some positives, like people's mood going up from saying something nice, because of associated emotions? And if you're in a good mood you genuinely feel more energized. And if you wholeheartedly believe that it helps, then it will help a bit, because of placebo effect? Let people do their weird little rituals in peace as long as it's not hurting anyone.

23:10 fun fact. Humans are the only species (iirc) whose adult members can digest lactose (a phenomenon called "lactase persistence"), let alone drink milk from other species. Most mammals are lactose intolerant (ie don't have the enzyme that helps digest lactose) after infancy, there's simply no reason for the body to continue producing the enzyme that helps digest lactose. "Lactase persistence" (ie the opposite of lactose intolerance in adults) even in humans is a relatively recent thing. So really, in the sense, we few humans who can drink milk as adults are the weird ones

I'm pretty sure I read that article, or at least one very similar. the main point was actually that; 1. most kids think that eating animals (ie pigs, lambs, chickens) would be wrong, but also 2. they don't make the connection between the finished product and the animal it came from (if you ask where bacon comes from they don't connect it to the cute pink oinkers) therefore: today's youth haven't developed the outlook that animals can sometimes be food because they are so-called 'naive consumers', and thus are a prime target for vegan proselytism. The star of David tattoo could also be viewed as a pagan hexacle, a symbol of protection, though the unicursal one is more common. Even if it was a five point star it still wouldn't be a pentagram, it would be a pentacle due to the circle around it, which is once again a symbol of protection.

Pagan here, pentacles are objects and pentagrams are written (the root "gram" refers to writing). If it was the correct symbol, it would be an pentagram. I'm not sure why this has gotten more commonly confused, even amongst pagans, over the last 10-15 years but if you look at book from the early 2000s and prior it's consistent on the matter.

I was very confused, so of course I asked what she thought these were. She said they were a kind of plant. Apparently in her mind hotdogs grew on trees like bananas and the bacon was the peal. @@Ahonya666 if it's too late, you gotta call a spade a spade, but there are ways for modern medicine, to prevent many causes of still birth. Of cause there are still cases, but reduced greatly. A big factor, for scientist to grade a country's development is by looking at child deaths. The higher a country is developed, the lower the rate.

5:48 even if earth was in a delicate balance like that guy suggests, the post would be an example of survivor bias. The premise of survivor bias is saying “oh we’re so lucky we live on such a pristine world,” but you wouldn’t exist if the world wasn’t so pristine. The ‘luck’ is irrelevant because there is no alternative for your existence. So if that guy was correct in saying earth was in such balance, it would be an example of that. Also, the earth is more than 20 feet in diameter so there you go.

The animal highway crossing things are actually quite common in parts of Canada, specifically intended for moose (since they tend to cause HORRIFIC accidents, one study estimated 13x more likely to be fatal to the driver than crashes with deer). But they had an issue that the wolves figured out to just wait at the crossing points and ambush the moose when they tried to cross. Also the water/words thing is pretty common, a japanese author named Masaru Emoto published a bunch of books and "studies" on it in the late 90s, and it's been floating through the alt health/new age movements ever since

4:05 Sounds like homeopathic "medicine". The belief is that water has "memory" so the dilluted medicine is "actually" stronger. Which gives us the classic joke about the homeopath who drank a glass of water and died from an overdose. Personally I hope my water doesn't remember everything its molecules has been in contact with at some point.

I had a psychiatrist tell me I could cure myself of my incurable autoimmune disease and spine deformity by writing “health” or “healing” on paper, then taping the paper to a jug of water and drinking the water. I could increase the effect by every morning sitting down and spending 20 minutes “sending healing vibes” before drinking it. It was infuriating. He argued with me when I said that water and paper wouldn’t CURE an autoimmune disease, scoliosis, and a spine injury that I had surgery for. He said studies proved it would work but he couldn’t find them right now. Uh-huh.

@@sourgreendolly7685 More like writing not just "sane" and "sanity" (as clinical insanity is solely the inability to tell fiction from reality, and has nothing to do with any of the other mental health disorders - you can have a panic disorder and still be perfectly sane), but also writing "emotionally stable", "calm", "happy", and "my brain actually works the way it's supposed to" - actually, you'd probably run out of paper if you got detailed enough.

12:45 so this reminds me of Burger King. They used to sell this third pounder for cheaper than the quarter pounder to try and outsell McDonald’s. The reason you probably have never bought them or heard of them is because it failed miserably because people thought a third was less than a quarter.

Our ethics teacher actually told us the think about the water and he believed that shit...wtf. He also shows us a video which said that water has a memory and that the harsh angels we force our water through (pipes and stuff) influences our water. And than he asked us to think about who profits when we don't know this 'science'... Hinting that homeopathy is real. He's also kind of antivacs. A TEACHER.

The water experiments where posotive and negative energy affect the water was done by Masaru Emoto. The thing is they weren't wrong, the positive water was way different from the negative water. The little detail they didn't mention was that the water didn't come from the same source and was clearly completely different to begin with, they wanted to prove a point so much they never even bothered with a control or repeatable and controllable experiments. The positive water came from clean drinking water, and the negative water came from a dirty creek. So basically all they proved was that dirty water was dirty. There are images everywhere of the different emotions affect on water crystals, but they are either just different shapes, or the negative emotions which came from "negative" water. As in already dirty water. And then published books and talked about everywhere someone would allow him to present his "research."

Imagine dissing the intelligence of a 4 year old because they haven't been told where bacon comes from yet. Sheesh.
